I started to read The Hobbit once again last week and it awoke a craving for LOTR/Tolquienesque fan-fiction, let it be crossovers with Harry Potter or not, so I thought I'd ask for some good stories here.

If you don't mind a BtVS crossover:

    The Girl Series

Something about this is simply amazing. It feels like Tolkien, but while keeping a certain uniqueness that Jennifer manages to pull of very nicely. IMHO, the 9th story is the best.

Are you reading the same story I am? That's the least amount of whoreishness you can get without reading Moby Dick.

On the crossover side, I remember "There and Back Again" by JesS1, "The Serpent of the South" by Andromalius and one Taure recommended some time ago that I can't find now.

I think all of them are abandoned, unless Andro plans to continue his.

    The Black Wizard by Azraeos.

Been a long time since I read it, but it was awesome from what I recall. It's a HP/LotR crossover by the way.

Yeah, that's the one. I think it's on Fiction Alley too, by the way. I'll try to find it and post it.

Since this is a Middle Earth story thread I thought I'd hijack it for a moment since I've got a pretty odd request.

I was wondering if there were any LotR fics wherein the world has gone through an industrial revolution and is closer to what our society was like pre-WWI... And then The War breaks out. It could be any kind of fic, from Aragorn's rise to power as Commander in Chief of the Human Armies to the memoirs of a hobbit tunneller planting explosives under the Orc lines.

Anything would do, but I want to see what Middle Earth would be like in a much more grimdark era.

Sounds pretty interesting, but I haven't seen anything like that. Sort of Steampunk LOTR?

If it hasn't been done maybe you could develop it a little and post it as a challenge or write it yourself.

Given that Middle-Earth is meant to be a kind of pre-history to the real world, I always enjoyed entertaining the plot idea of, in the present day, a Balrog being woken up in the Alps.

...in your opinion. It'd be pretty much down to the author to define the relative strengths.

Yeah, spirit of fire and shadow with no 'real' body to speak of versus the ultimate in physical reactions... Tough decision.

Decided to bump this, no need for two threads about the same topic.

Tolkien's universe has a lot of potential, but I haven't seen many good fics taking place in it, aside from the odd crossover. So I want you all to throw all the potentially decent stuff you can find at me.

Stories about people finding the Ring and dealing with its corruption would be especially appreciated.

Deviations from canon are a must, if the events take place during the books.

I'm not the biggest fan of crossovers, unless the fusion of universes is well balanced.

    Thanks in advance!
