What I was thinking of was back before he had Molly as an apprentice.... Need to study for finals so I can't go poking through all my books but I'll try and find what I'm thinking of when I get a chance.

He also used thaumaturgy in Proven Guilty at the convention, didn't he? But if I was as wrong as it appears, then my apologies, I just had it confused.

 

Early in the series it was always said that thaumaturgy was his area of expertise (what with him being a PI specialising in finding things so his tracking spells got a bit of a work out), but in the later books I'd expect his evocation would have overtaken it because of his experience in the war and him gaining soul/hellfire. Then again, he is still nowhere near the level of skill Luccio was in Dead Beat (what with his fire spells still being more 'gouts of flame' compared to her 'needle thin blades'), so perhaps he is still a thaumaturgy specialist, it just doesn't get as much screen time.

Also, I'm pretty sure Little Chicago was still unfinished as of its first go, and he had been distracted from the ritual he needed to do to prepare for it as well, because things like that need concentration. Lots of it.

 

I seem to recall him saying Little Chicago would always be unfinished, on account of it always having to be updated constantly to reflect the current changes in real-life Chicago.

 

^ This. What I think people are thinking of as 'unfinished' is that it was broken. As in head-exploding broken. Until someone got behind his wards in PG and fixed it.

 

But my point stands, then. With all of Dresden's priciples and ideas, he has a natural flair fro the symbolism and connections made in thaumaturgy, and he's talked about that before. We've seen what a decent circle and a ley line can be capable of. If he ever has to use Demonreach, it would be awesome to see him use that as a weapon.

Research before jumping to conclusions, grasshoppers. Dresden implied that he isn't very good at evocations many times in the early books, particularly compared to someone like Morgan, who, if you recall, was tossing around Earth evocations without foci when he thought Dresden had capped Luccio.


We've seen him do some pretty awesome evocations since then, and he's clearly gotten better, however he still doesn't have nearly as much control as Luccio or Morgan. Heck, even Ramirez seems to be able to throw more stuff around than Dresden, or atleast he can toss his acid blobs more frequently than Dresden can spew fire.

Wasn't it implied somewhere that his alter-ego inside his head and Lash working together had something to do with it? I could be mistaken but I seem to recall reading something to that effect.

Wut? Divine Intervention can take whatever form it wants. From gifting Harry with Soulfire to fixing Little Chicago for him, though I doubt that's what happened in this instance.

 

You're equating Uriel gifting soul fire to Dresden with some random angel coming in and messing with Little Chicago. Everything we've seen Heaven do so far has been either internal (the Knight's feelings) or power related (soulfire). It'd be great if angels form on high would come down and catch the bullets heading for Sanya but there has been zero implication of anything like that even remotely happening.

EDIT: @Jon: If Lasciel could influence Little Chicago there would have been no need to play with illusions when Dresden wanted to use it for the first time. She could have just told him about the head explodiness and Bob would have confirmed.

 

You said it best yourself. Everything we've seen so far does not equal everything that Heaven can or will do. It's fucking Divine Intervention. It can happen whichever way it damn well pleases to.
