Hey guys I've been kind of curious for a while about whether or not any DLP members play guitar or other instruments. Wasn't sure where to post this but since there is a music thing in this part of the forum I took my chances here.

Seems to me there acoustic guitar is getting kind of popular nowadays, and I've started playing two years ago after seeing some awesome stuff at the Montreal Jazz Festival.

Right now I'm more into playing pop-y stuff like this:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntfs8RXbBZE&feature=channel

It's not me playing but I pretty much sound exactly like that.

If you guys play instruments, what style do you prefer? If you don't, what would you like to explore?

Guitar, Piano, and sing a bit; deep love of each, and not enough time for any of'em.

Vocally, I can appreciate any genre. Guitar-wise, I play mostly Jazz and R&B. Piano is much the same - think Jamie Cullum.

Guitar for me. I play a lot of funk (playing the Chilli Peppers is so much fun) and rock but I always enjoy falling back to some blues whenever I'm relaxing. Lately my friend has been teaching me some Latin and Spanish scales and they're a lot of fun. I'm really interested in putting the time in to learn some metal because metal + psytrance = skeeeeet. And I am in the process of turning an old sound deck into a mixboard so should be fun.

It is indeed very fun XD. Here is an awesome cover of Snow by the Chilli Peppers that you can learn to play.

Guitar for me, too. I play mostly rock/metal/prog, but I'm more into the melodic versions and not so much the "Immortal" stuff. ;)

Ten guesses what type of music I do vocally, and the first nine don't count.

Although I do play guitar, piano, trumpet and the skin flute (although I'm not particularly gifted at any of those four, I do enjoy them all).

I play the violin. Mainly fiddle, with some classical and other thrown in for good measure.

Guitar mostly, with some piano. I mostly play/listen to progressive rock/metal, but I like pretty much everything, particularly jamming to some blues/jazz.

Got a learner's guitar Starcaster by Fender for Christmas last year. The very next day I sliced through a tendon, lol. It's taken me a year just to get halfway back to normal movement so I could start learning.

Able to do simple cords, and learning scales atm, but speedier playing and some chords will probably be impossible for me for some time =/

I'd be happy if I could do the DOA riff though damnit, it's simple enough, but I don't have the calluses built up enough yet to do the sliding without feeling like I'm gonna cut my finger open on the string =/

Edit: lol plastic guitars =) Rock Band Bassist most songs on Expert, Guitar most on hard 100% moving onto drums now.

I still play piano and guitar, though not often enough to really be happy with my chops in either. The only instrument where I ever reached "kickass" proficiency was trumpet, though I haven't played seriously since college orchestra. For instruments, I own an upright piano, an 80s Fender Jap-Strat that I rarely get out anymore, and a Fender DG100 acoustic (nothing special--punchy sound and playable) that I noodle on a lot. My Stradivarius Bach trumpet sits in the closet, except for the rare times when I get the urge to put on some Wynton, try to keep up, and end up demoralized.

My wife was a prodigy at the pipa (Chinese lute) when she was young and trained under one of the top muscians in China. While in secondary school, she received an invite to the Chinese equivalent of Julliard, but her father insisted she give up music to study something more practical (physics). A year or so ago, we commissioned a luthier in Shanghai to craft a custom instrument for her and she's been playing a lot lately. (I'll see if I can dig up a youtube video if anyone cares).

I recently picked up piano, since it's required for my major. I've been in choir since I was 7 though, and currently sing bass/baritone. All the lady hobbits love my sexy voice.

Pretty sure everyone just completely missed this. Or there really is an instrument called the skin flute.

    In either case, lulz.

I have played the violin since I was 11, my teacher is very traditional so mostly classics but when my great uncle is around he teaches me jazz since he was in a jazz band back in the stone age.

Holy crap that must have hurt. Anyhow I play mostly acoustic guitar nowadays and I used to play piano (played for 10 years with conservatory exams and stuff). Anyways, I know music theory through piano but I never really learned chord shapes or scales on the guitar because I play mostly in altered tunings XD. I should probably get around to that some time.

Anyhow right now my guitar is in for a setup/repair because there is something wrong with the action and two of the tuning pegs broke.

I have a Seagull minijumbo (MJM6) with elixir nanoweb phosphor bronze strings on it (great strings). It's not a very expensive guitar compared to most others, but it sounds pretty good for the price and it's made in Quebec, Canada.

I've been playing guitar for about three and a half years now. Style wise, mostly Blues, Rock, Blues-Rock and Metal on my awesome Warmoth LP that I put together at the beginning of last year, and a lot of folky stuff on my Takamine G series. I'm also a fair hand at the Tin Whistle and Bodhrán.

I did have a massive post typed out and then lost it. :<

EDIT: Never liked Elixir strings tbh, I think they feel pretty weird. Martins for my Takamine, and Ernie Balls for the LP.

EDIT 2: What alt tunings do you play in? I'm always in between standard and drop D (and whenever I jam with one of my friends I always end up in drop C), and whenever I play slide it's in open E

Hmmm, here's a list of tunings of all the songs I've learned up till now:

    Drop C
    Drop D(obviously)
    DADGAD(obviously as well)
    DADF#AD
    DADF#BD
    DADF#AE
    DADGCE
    DACFCD
    D#ADGBE
    DAC#G#AE
    DAC#EBE
    DAEF#AD
    DGDGBC
    DGDGAD
    DADGAC

    EGCGBD
    EACGCD
    EBEGAD
    EBEGBE
    ECDGAD

    FACGCE
    F#ADGBE

    CGDF#BD
    CGDGAD
    CGDGBC
    CGEbFBbD
    CGCGBbC
    CGDGBbD
    C#G#EF#BE

    BGDGAD
    BF#C#F#BF#
    BBDF#BD
    BbBbDGCE

    AAEGAE

Yeah, the list is fairly short. This is part of the reason why I haven't yet bothered to learn standard chords and scales, though I definitely will be the end of next year. With school being quite busy though, I've just been playing songs that I find neat. Not really much time to be serious about learning music with the classical approach lol. Heck I think the first song I learned on guitar was Rylynn by Andy Mckee.
I'm a total noob when it comes to improv and writing my own tunes, but some of these tunings are pretty easy and fun to find stuff in, so give em a try XD

Averis: Don't underestimate your skin flute playing abilities. I'm sure you're very good at it.
