Agreed with some of the others in that Snakecharmer isn't an indy-Harry at this point; Harry is in fact extremely dependent while he learns his way around the new elements placed before him. This author's prose seems to be well-crafted, though, and the story does have potential (potential - that flighty temptress :p ). The Daphne characterization doesn't yet piss me off or show signs of heading in that direction, which is a good thing. If it did that would be a deal-breaker; IMO a bad Daphne/Fleur/Tonks/etc. is even more grotesque than a bad Ginny.

It is roughly as good in its non-indy genre as most good indy-stories, so for now I'm putting it on my read list. 3.5 / 5, with potential to go up if the author keeps her eye on the prize.

It's called the Library List. ;)

Way too many grammar errors in the first chapter killed it for me.

Pretty sure that fic was posted in the old version of this thread.

Anyway, something I found in some C2 archive a couple hours back, humour's probably too cheap for most.

I just came across this HP/Dresden Files crossover. It has not been up long and it is very short at 1332 words.

Enter the Dragon by Doghead Thirteen
Summary: It began with a quirk of timing. It continued because dragons, such as what 8-year-old Harry Potter just turned into, are large and difficult to control and have an appetite that won't stop. Fortunate for everyone except Fudge he's a nice kid, eh?

I like reading Calum's work, and he has a great passion when it comes to writing. I think this story is above average, and I would not be surprised to see this work be nominated for the library.

At the moment, I wouldn't if only because just one chapter has been completed. Granted, it's approximately 40,000 words (there are a few omakes after the end of the chapter), yes, 40,000 words.

This opening chapter covers a period of about three years. I enjoyed it thoroughly, and I look forward to reading the next chapter.

Yes. It shows a lot of promise.
Still, Doghead13 has way too many unfinished stories. I've noticed that many authors with lots of open stories tend to end up abandoning them. I hope that doesn't happen - Doghead13 has such wonderful ideas.

I just finished reading what's available for a 53k WIP called The Beastmaster. It was put up for review a few months ago by some dumbass who just wanted us to troll the author. I think it was deleted before anyone actually reviewed it.

Rest assured, it's not a shit-fic. Harry has an innate ability to manipulate the minds of various animals and form a sort of bond with them. He discovered this ability in his cupboard, so he grows up more comfortable with animals than humans. When he reaches Hogwarts, the only person he learns to trust is Hermione. Right now it's at Year 3, and has enough new and interesting ideas to keep me reading.

The trouble with the story is dialogue. Harry has a bizarre lack of affect that makes his character feel flat, and the other characters aren't much better. The dialogue is used to dispense information and often seems stilted and unrealistic. This bleeds over into the rest of the story, making it a much duller read than it has to be.

I'd give it a 3/5 or so (4/5 for the idea and 2/5 for the execution).

The author also has a complete story called The Natural Animagus, where Harry somehow turns himself into a kneazle as a very young child and joins the other kneazles at Mrs. Figg's.

I like this one. It's cute, but boring. The story should still be rated higher, maybe T since there is heavy Dursley abuse. The fact that things got so bad that he had to become a kitten is pretty sad.

Does it ever strike anyone else as very odd that we type things like this without batting an eye? I mean really, we'd crucify a friend for saying something like that in real life, pretty much no matter the context, right?

I was bored, so I started going through the pages of some authors I like and when I got to Perspicacity's Favorite Stories, I noticed this story was listed. I was intrigued so I read it. I thought it was a very good one-shot.

Given that the main character is not Harry Potter and the story is a fairly short one-shot, I don't think the story will be of interest to a lot of DLP folks. That being said, this story, the other one-shots, and one seven-chapter completed short fic are all very good, and I think worth reading.

If you like this story and are interested in the others that make up the series, go to respitechristopher's fanfiction page and look for stories with 'The Mercury Chronicles' as the titles (there are of course different subtitles). I was pleasantly surprised.

I'd also recommend Cauterize by Lady Altair, which inspired Misspent Youth. It's a prequel to Christopher's story and one of the best one-shots I've read.

I actually would recommend this, except the premise - it's a Buffy story first, Harry Potter/Addams family second. Xander is quite easily the main character, and while I enjoy reading in the Buffy fandom, it's not everyone's cup of tea. Perhaps it can go in other fandoms?

Xander is a bit Mary-Sue-ish, he's the heir of two pureblood families, a wand crafter, invents magical cell phones, and through the help of a magical grimoire is connected to Narcissa Malfoy and Sirius Black. That said, it all feels natural and not overpowered at all in-story.

He has a peripheral role in all of the canon events, but unlike most AUs, does not shy away with changing things if they'd make sense. Right now the story is in the summer after third year, and Xander just trained Occlumency and got his lowest wandcrafter license, so he'd actually legally be allowed to carry a second wand.

Harry is developed a bit more than in canon, seems to be a bit more of a follower, but that seems to be changing now that he was appointed Regent Black. Oh right, did I mention that the way that Sirius was saved was that after he was arrested by Aurors, Xander threw a portkey at him, starting an international incident?

The politics and family issues are why I read this story, and they're really well done.

TL;DR: If you don't mind reading a Xander-centric story with mostly canon plot and very interesting spell theory, give this a try.

Awesome rec, Pers. That was some outstanding writing.

While we're on the subject of non-Harry-centric introspective oneshots, I'd recommend Memories of Etched Glass by Sionnain. It's rare to see a Bellatrix that isn't frothing at the mouth with fanatical devotion.

Both oneshots are library-worthy, I think, but it's hard to predict how they would fare in For Review. The lack of Harry will turn a lot of people off.

After a reign of two hundred years that is about to come to an end, Dark Lord Harry Potter sends himself back in time to rebuild his World Empire from the ashes.
    Rated: T - English - Adventure/Fantasy - Chapters: 2 - Words: 9,395 - Reviews: 46 - Updated: 12-21-09 - Published: 12-13-09 - Harry P. & Fleur D.

It's a Dark Lord!Harry/Fleur, and the idea is surprisingly epic; Harry has build his empire after winning against Voldemort, but after the mentioned two hundred years, he falls. It's a like what came up in the Dark Lord-Harry thread recently, and after reading this, I'd really have wanted to see more of it (the idea of rise and fall does work, after all), instead of the back in time plot. Especially as it's back to Harry pre-Hogwarts -- there isn't much sense in having Harry physically five year old and mentally grown up, and then using magic to give him an older appearance, anyway.

And since there is now the entirety of the Hogwarts years ahead, it'll most likely end up abandoned :| The author should've set the entry point in GoF; that's more than enough time to tell the story; and we could've started on Harry/ Fleur right away. Plus, I wouldn't need to read about five year old Harry running around. Even if he's got all the memories, it's somewhat ridiculous >_>

Grammar and spelling is good though, so if you're a fan of the genre, give it a try.

Pasting my thoughts from a month and a half ago which still apply...

It could go in other fandoms but considering the grammar errors and the need for good beta readers, I don't know if it'd make the library... I see it hovering around a 3.5 star average, which is a shame. Use of good betas would have added another star on average I think.

    Agreed.

One last thing: I didn't notice until now that I misspelled 'Addams' when specifically making reference to Wednesday a month and a half ago, so I made the correction there-- and the only change I made.

The only house at Hogwarts that Harry knew about was Slytherin. Hagrid hadn’t entirely explained the reason for all the fame, nor had he bought a birthday gift for him. Harry never met Ron on the train ride to Hogwarts. Where does he go from there?

Story has been going on for over a year, over a 100K words so I don't think the author is going to abandon it, it has solid writing, although nothing is overly original. Overall it is a good read if you really have nothing better to do over the holidays.

It is usually customary to give comments on what the story is about, and why you think it is worth reading. Just an fyi.
