Virail: Was there really any need for your fat ass to be sarcastic and (not)subtly insult the other dude?

    Cool it.

Ahh... The Core. Made me decide to do Biology instead of Physics when I realised that no Physics class could turn into the obvious crazy stupid fun The Core showed...

It kinda does exist. In a "We need a name for something" way.
I like Unobtainium over the others.

The movie was actually pretty good, if you're just looking to be entertained for ~3 hours and don't get butthurt over Cameron beating you over the head with the whole Evil-Capitalism/European-Colonialism-fucking-over-the-aboriginal-population-thing... although it's not as though the conflict driving the plot was completely beyond the realm of possibility.

The visuals were pretty fantastic, although once I framed the movie in terms of furries it was impossible not to view it through that lens--he gets into his furry suit and yiffs with the hot, blue, furry chick.

Edit: They could have just as easily said called the "unobtanium," "macguffin-tanium." It was just there to provide a way to move the big plot forward.

I support the domination of space by Humans. LONG LIVE THE HUMAN EMPIRE!

Other then that. I really didn't care much for this. I got tired of movies like this that time they did it.

I just got back from this and I have to say I fucking loved it, its seriously my new favorite movie, I mean it was just a flat out entertaining movie and a marvel of special effects engineering.

Also yeah they were tree-huggers but guess what? If the trees here granted my prayers, protected me, healed my sick and dying friends and answered my damn prayers then I'd hug some damned trees too.

I found the movie pretty fun to watch, but I still think the reason behind Neytiri not firing that first arrow and pwning the main character is totally bullcrap (even more so than the other stuff).

Far as I could tell, the air wasn't poisonous, just that the place had a much lower gravity than Earth's (probably why the Na'avi and the other animals grew to be so much larger than their Earthly counterparts). The lower gravity might have resulted in a weaker atmosphere and hence less oxygen than humans need - which would be why they could recover from being exposed to the native atmosphere with their masks.

Minor nitpick aside, my only major problem with the movie was that the Na'avi had only four limbs. Every other higher animal on Pandora had six limbs which fit very well into any theory of evolution - ie by some quirk of fate the initial animal that eventually evolved into all of them had six limbs, much like higher animals (birds, reptiles, mammals and amphibians) have four on Earth.

Knowing that they spent so much time and effort creating an entire planet's worth of animals that fit perfectly into that particular evolutionary pattern, seeing the sentient race have only four limbs simply because that's what humans have and would make the acting easier was annoying.

But then again, I only watched the movie for the special effects and the world promised, so I wasn't really overly concerned with the plot.

If we are nitpicking there was the creature which has the upper two limbs partially joined.

The air was poisonous. They said that you'd be unconscious in 30 seconds and dead in 4 min. That's why they all wore re-breathers and at the end the guy was holding his breath and trying to grab the mask.

Oh hay, an insult about being fat. Haven't seen that one before.

Saw it last night. Enjoyed it immensely. Didn't go into it expecting the end-all of plots, and I didn't get one. I got a simple plot, that combined with the absolutely-fucking-beautiful world they created, made for a highly entertaining movie.

This is one of those movies I could go see again.
It was what I expected. Great graphics and a good story.

Again easily explainable by a lack of oxygen.

That you can sort of understand. As long as the creature has the same skeletal structure, some modifications are well and good.

It really said "never returned"? I actually heard "The sky people left, save for a few chosen ones (or something similar), back to their dying world".

Pandora wasn't exactly a viable option for settlement (there's the small problem with the poison air, and every living thing on the planet being lethal), so the only reason for people to go would be (a) commercial, or (b) scientific.

The people in the story were there on the first option, and since they returned without any loot (and also lost all the gear they had on the planet) it's likely that they bankrupted their parent corporation and that they couldn't raise the capital to send another expedition.

Alternatively, the ending could have just been a variation of "and they lived happily ever after" and we're overthinking it.

^This is what I was thinking, it was a shaky venture as is that was pretty much held there solely by RDA urging and when they started taking heavy casualties on the military side of things coupled with the fact that they made little to no profit from it, I was thinking folks on Earth in a nutshell would just say fuck it.

My opinion on it at least.

Edit: Didn't want to double post so I just went back to edit, I just found out apparently Cameron plans to make a trilogy out of Avatar. The second will pick up immediatley after the end of the first one and will follow Jake and Neytiri.

    Cameron Avatar Trilogy Interview

I for one am happy about this, I loved it and Cameron is one of the few directors with a semi decent record on sequels.

Just saw it tonight. It was a blast to watch. As stated above - the plot is simplistic. The dialogue was even weaker. When Jake was doing his speech I found myself wishing that it was Adama. Adama gives damn good speeches before a toaster hunt. That said, I would gladly see this movie again. The simple plot worked in the incredible world created by Cameron.

    Plus it was really pretty.

The best part is that they had flying mounts. That just kicked ass. Even better, Jake got himself an EPIC flying mount. I suspect the reason we never saw him fight the Toruk is because Jake simply got on the back and flew to the nearest vendor and bought the Artisan riding skill along with the mount.

    Plus it was really pretty.
