Now that's just being a smartass Oz (EDIT: and tehan), I meant the gigantic basilisk's from CoS. Hm, the potion probably is fanon, so I'm going to reiterate by asking if there is some form of figuring out if you have the potential to become an animagi.

    I don't know, I've seen a couple Harem fics...

*snicker* I just realized what your title means, oz.

Don't worry, I'm sure you can get a nice shiny title too if you ask nice. It may even be colourful.

I'm going to try and keep this civil. It's not your fault, I know; but your nitpicking in all the wrong places, coupled with your talent for mingling fanon with canon, gets on my nerves like few things do.

Hell, no. Hell no. They're just said to be good at magic. Both of them. Period. James isn't even said to be good at Transfiguration; it's a safe bet because his wand is suited to Transfiguration, but that's all. Sirius isn't said to be specifically good anything, just good at everything (still from PoA). Peter "needed all their help to finally succeed."

No, there is not. No there is not! There is no potion whatsoever. It's not said, not even once, that you need a potion or a spell or a house-elf to become an Animagus. The technical details are just "it's difficult, long, and dangerous."

So yeah. You need to be exceptionally talented and dedicated. Hence the small amount of Animagi.

Ordinary stag, ordinary dog (note: a dog, not a Grim -- he just looks like one), ordinary rat, ordinary cat, ordinary beetle. Why didn't these people pick better animals?

Maybe because they don't get to choose. That's fanon, but it's plausible. Also, notice the pattern: in the books, all we have are Muggle animals.

No. I asked what characteristic they shared, albeit in an ambiguous way. But since it was (obviously) a rhetorical question and that I answered it almost immediately, I didn't think the ambiguity was a problem.

    MOVIE! MOVIE! MOVIE!

That, Foxy, is the movie you're talking about. In the books, Peter does not shrink straight out of his things.

If you miss that one again, I'll have to call troll.

There isn't. There isn't even any canon indication whether there's any reason any given person can't be an animagi. The only reason this has stretched for three pages is you're too fucktarded to accept the fact that you can't tell canon from fanon.

I'm not a fucktard, and I haven't been intentionally trying to stretch this thread 3 pages. It may be that JKR was vague to me and I've been reading fan fiction for a while which is why I have trouble with the canon/fanon differences.

I would have been happy to end this on the beginning of the second page, but somehow this has gone from what happens to belongings when people transform, to whether or not you can become an animagi on a whim. It's fucked up and I had no intention of this happening.

Yes, I noticed that they are all muggle animals, so I'll change basilisk to king cobra. Extremely poisoness and the form would help Tom get out of tight spots.

    Tinn: I'M SORRY I'M SORRY I'M SORRY.

I checked three times and I'm not a troll.

I'm going to apologize to everybody one more time because, once more, this thread was not meant to spiral so far out of control.

Would just like to add to this: in OotP, Snape's Memory, Sirius mocks Remus for having to revise his Transfiguration OWL material, which Sirius considers ridiculously easy.

...why would he need it? If he needs to "get out of a tight spot" he's got a lot of better options than turning into a snake, which can be quite easily killed with 4th year charms.

Secondly, he's probably so skilled at transfiguration anyway that he could probably turn himself into an animal, if he wanted to, with a wand rather than having to use the animagus transformation.

Finally, random JKR piece of animagus info from some interview: a person doesn't know what their animagus form is going to be until they make their first transformation. That seems to pretty strongly indicate that you don't choose your form.

Yeah, he wouldn't need it, but I was hypothetically asking if he would be able to if he wanted an animagi form

So, you're asking "Would Voldemort, explicitly said by Dumbledore to be the greatest student to pass through Hogwarts, be able to perform a piece of magic Rita Skeeter and Peter Pettigrew were able to master?"

    To that I say "yes".

Yup, at this point I'm drawing that conclusion. Before I had been under the impression you were born with the ability, like being a metemorph, but I'm apparently wrong.

Animagi are made, not born. Metamorphamagi are born not made.

Kind of like how you can learn Mermish, but you can't learn parsceltounge (note: Ron had no idea if he was actually saying words, he just imitated the sounds Harry has made in the past.

Edit: I'll just go on repeating previous points.

    Darthbill: IIRC Dumbledore learned Parseltongue.

Which is a bit odd, really.

Not because (as most people who dislike DH try to claim) I think that, as a language, it should be unlearnable and magical only.

I'm fine with it being learnable in theory.

I just wonder where he learnt it. It's not like there's anyone to teach him.

(Random fanon speculation: Dumbledore knows Parseltongue because he's a snake animagus).

Dumbledore is known to have been attracted to one Dark Lord in his time; perhaps he was attracted to another one?

There has to be a reason Voldemort hates Dumbledore.

But yes, it is a valid question.

Psh, I can just see that. Dumbledore, poster-boy Gryffindor, Leader of the Light, as a snake animagus.

Nah, I do think Parsletongue could be learnable. It's obviously transferable (exp: Harry), but that may be a special circumstance...

That's why I phrased it as a question.
