Is the story an analogue of the Daily Telegraph crossword thing in the month before D-Day? (The description makes it sound as if it is).

Not really. I had to look it up to know what you were referring to, but the D-Day clues appear to have been either a bizarre coincidence or an unintentional leak of code words that had been bandied about too liberally by soldiers.

In this story, someone is deliberately including passwords to the Potterwatch broadcast in the crossword. Kingsley tries to determine how, and if the security leak is a friend or an enemy.

It's actually a little like that, but the author of the crosswords in this fic is actually aware of what he/she is doing.

Quite a good fic if I may say so, kept me entertained for a while:)

    EDIT: Too little, too late

A funny little one-shot from a rather unique perspective.

I was a bit surprised this one wasn't already listed somewhere, but the search came up with nada.

    The Prank War by CrazyGirl47
"Now that Voldemort is dead, Harry and company are enjoying their last year of school by taking part in a timehonored Hogwarts tradition: the seventh year prank war. Edited and reposted. First brand new chapter now updated!" Rated: T - English - Humor/Romance - Chapters: 45 - Words: 164,390 - Reviews: 5892 - Updated: 5-30-09 - Published: 8-14-04 - Hermione G. & Draco M.

This fic is hilarious. I mean, the Hermione and Snape interactions alone are worth the read, but everything else is great as well. It has top-notch writing and it's pretty long already. Hasn't been updated in awhile, but I doubt the author has forgotten about it. It was the first HP fic I ever read, I believe, so I could be bias. Still, I enjoy reading through it every few months when I need a laugh.

The fic is named "The Prank War" so it's an absolute fail right there. Probably gonna read it when I get bored but it doesn't sound promising.

DLP is not big on pranks and Snape. Or Malfoy (I'm assuming he has a significant role due to the character listing). I doubt it'd be particularly well received here. From my brief glance, it looks like one of those silly fics that seems enjoyable at first but outlives it's welcome after 5-8 chapters at best.

This has gone through For Review, and failed (EDIT: Should've read the next post - Amne already mentioned that). As I said then, it's average, boring average. Nothing new to contribute in any realm of the fanfiction. Average to awful dialouge. Don't know why it has nearly 2000 reviews...

Best fic recommended here for awhile. Good find, Mike.

(Now off to read Betrothal Contracts, and have little doubt my last line will not need to be amended.)

I think it's got so many because it's kinda average to us, but probably a good example of "mainstream" fic. Harry and Daphne are a big pairing draw, and something about this fic has garnered it several hundred followers. My guess would be that the 2000 reviews consist of, "Great. Keep it up", and there's about 34 chapters' worth of them. Meanwhile, the story is kinda filler-ish, and a little on the average side. The same players are playing the same tired roles (Tonks, Remus, Dumbledore, Sirius, Snape...), and Daphne is kinda uninteresting and generic, you know, compared to the other, better, Daphne's floating around here on this forum.

I quite like this one, a little too early to be judging it fully but it has promise I think.

End of chapter 5 is midway through GoF.

Heh, I just finished reading the last chapter myself and was going to put it here.

It's not a great fic, but it's very original and it could very well turn out to be quite good if the author avoids certain cliches (Harry the caveman get's Fleur the beautiful girl that all the "civilized" males want).

First five chapters are a bit strange but I'm reading it for what I hope it will become right now.

All 3 chapters posted today, each quite short but chapter 1/prologue was quite good and captured my interest. Chapters 2 and 3 were a little meh what with the whole restart of Hogwarts life.

This could be another one to watch though. I hope.

Pros: A fairly original plot. Although the author uses a different term, Harry more or less turns Gabrielle into a Harry Horcrux when he dies saving her in the 2nd task. So far the story has been fun for me to read, as it diverts in nifty new directions from canon. Grammar and vocab-wise the author is decent - he doesn't blow my mind but I don't cringe while reading. The author updates his stories consistently.

Cons: Another story I like that may or may not violate more than a few rules of canon. The Harry/Gabby relationship is a tad on the soul-bondy side - although thankfully Gabrielle so far is portrayed as too young for anything approaching romance. I do have some slight concerns with the characterization - since in the author's HP/SM xover series Dumbledore and Snape are portrayed as rather ridiculous people. However, that is also a humor story, so hopefully it doesn't occur in this story.

Conclusion: If this was in review - I would honestly bounce between 3 and 4 stars. It's not going to blow your mind like a story by Shezza - but I had fun reading this.

In that case, you really should have posted it there.

I agree with this story, btw. Definitely library worthy.

I'm slow on the draw with these, but what the hell.

3.5 out of 5 - quite good, IMO. The plotting is well-crafted and interesting. The thing that lets it down and keeps it from being a truly great fic is the prose. The author is perfectly competent, technically, but somehow his writing feels very flat. There are bits of that story that should feel extremely creepy, or emotionally hopeless, but those emotions don't come through well. The writing was decent enough when describing Harry and Ginny's dysfunctional relationship, I guess.

These were both very good. I always like reading well written alternate perspectives of the DH year; as readers we missed a lot of good stuff, by being stuck with camping!Trio.

Another boring incarnation of the Harry/Daphne pairing. It's just so... average. Methinks I'm hoping for too much these days...

It gets better after the prologue. That said, it may not be to everyone's taste.

Not hate, but regret. I'm so tired of the damn "Dark" versus "Light" versus "Grey" thing in HP fanfiction.

Okay. Now some one absolutely has to write a Bible/Harry Potter crossover where Voldemort doesn't have a link with Harry; instead, Satan does. Shit would be beyonkers, son son.
