Huge fan of dangerously wild pokemon stories. Well written, however quite disturbing that Professor Oak and Ash only feel token sadness towards the death of Mom. A little too plot driven and obviously written by a dude. 5/5.

I liked it. I did feel that the "dark" aspect of the universe was overdone a bit - we don't need danger in every paragraph to get the idea that this isn't the nice safe canon universe.

I also wasn't a massive fan of the Gyarados attacking Pallet Town at the start with a load of uber attacks... it kinda takes away from any "big reveal" of powerful Pokemon in the future, because they're all going to be second the the Gyarados until we get into legendary Pokemon. Which means every opponent is going to feel like an anti-climax.

Ash's super training ability is pretty interesting. A hero has to have some sort of special power/ability, after all.

I am also expecting Ash on Misty action. All this mentioning of the sharing rooms is such a tease.

    There are others? Links please.

I think that `token sadness' is a bit of an exaggeration, but yes, he doesn't have the reaction that a normal person from our world or cannon would. There's a few things I'd like to point out, though:

    - In a world as dangerous as that, Ash is certain to have lost many people he cares about. That changes how you cope with loss.
    - He's been busy. That has a bigger impact than you'd think. I'd bet his reaction would've been a lot stronger if he was just sitting around. Some people will even intentionally make themselves busy as a coping strategy for loss (eg. person who spends every waking minute planning the lost one's funeral).
    - Initially after the attack he was being given medicine. I'd be surprised if he wasn't being given pain medication. That also changes how you react to loss.

Circumstances considered, Ash seems like a remarkably well adapted and psychologically stable individual.

Huh. I had the opposite. I found his quest in cannon... petty. His goal is to beat everyone and collect badges. Yipee!

In this story, I can actually get behind his motivation.

Poké Wars: The Subsistence » reviews
Ho oh has declared war on humans by removing pokemon dampeners, making attacks brutally real. In response to the human genocide, humanity will band together to fight and survive. Countless will die, and this new world will mature the characters you know.

    And it's ongoing sequel:

Poké Wars: The Coalescence » reviews
Ash and his company have survived the first hurdle of adapting to the world of undampened Pokemon. As they make their way through Kanto while gaining allies, more lethal challenges await them. Sequel to Poké Wars: The Subsistence.

These are in my favorites. They definitely have their moments, but they weren't fics I was planning on putting up for review.

Oh, and if you read these, I would skip to the sequel after Chapter 24 of the first one, assuming you get that far. It switches from Ash's point-to-view to May's. . . so yeah, you know what's up with that.

That's assuming that the Gyarados isn't one of Team Rocket's heavy hitters. Maybe they found out about Professor Oak's experimental - super!trainer - grandson and tried to have it killed by a "wild" pokemon attack.

Na; think if they did use Gyrados as a heavy hitter, it was the tool to make Oak fuck off as he did. Maybe they even caused his disappearance. I don't think Ash was on the radar at the time.

A readable pokemon fic? Wow. I didn't think they existed.

The only thing I don't like is the presence of Pikachu – I think there are more interesting / humorous pokemon out there that could be substituted (coughkoffingcough), or that Pikachu could appear later on in the story, rather than becoming a central focus from the start. It's just, what can Pikachu do? Jump around and shock things? It's overused.

    Still, a fun read.

I loved the characterization of James and Jesse in this. It was such a departure from their norm that was truly refreshing, plus it's easy to see how, in a crueler world, they could turn out like this.

That said I knew Misty's sister was a snake the minute she turned on the charm in the apartment. I'm betting she played both Rocket and Misty for suckers.

My favorite part was the Weedle hive. I could actually feel the horror that the author was trying to convey with the scene. It's been a while since that's happened.

I found this a few chapters ago, and was immediately hooked. I've always wanted to see a more mature pokemon universe, and this delivers, even if the author occasionally goes overboard with the "zomg!dangerous!"ness of the world.

Well I'll give it a read. Recently started listening to The Protomen and it's put me in the mood for dark takes on beloved childhood games.

Come to think of it, a Protomen-style rock opera about Pokemon would be pretty damn awesome.

So far so good. Its a bit...over done in the 'the world is a horrid place' department, but that can be overlooked. Also...

Growlithe evolves into Arcanine with a fire stone dammit! NOT naturally!

    ._. Im such a loser...

In this it's implied that age plays a larger part in Pokémon than experience or environmental factors, which is more realistic in my opinion.

And Chime, Pikachu was the best Pkkémon of all time. OF ALL TIME! D8

Anyway, yeah... this is the second Pokémon fic I've read (the first being that awesome Bulbasaur!Ash fic) and it's better than 99% of fics I've read. 5/5

    You, Sir, ar an idiot.

Fettucini was an emo little bitch who took down his fics (Which btw featured Harry playing Hotel California on an acoustic guitar and using macbooks) because he had 'risen above' fanfiction. The dude was fucked up but that's beside the point. His Pokemon fic isn't even in the same league as this.

Wasn't that SerpentSannin? He was definitely an an emo bitch. Hotel California, really? Free Bird FTW!

I enjoyed it, I've never really been able to get into Pokemon fics, but this one has held my attention. Probably not for long, I get tired of the endless traveling and random battles.

Free Bird is awesome! Hard to really do it justice on only an acoustic though... D:
