First thing I thought when I read it, too.

You have to remember I live in Aus. Butcher wouldn't be as well known here, and thus not as many copies/books. (Though I have seen an increase in the last year or so.)

 

Glad to know I'm not the only one who thought that... and cringed. Fortunately, we know this beast is all about the murder and explosion, and not the angst and the gay.

On a side note, it's about fucking time Harry went back his goddamn office. Even if it's just to accidentally burn it down. <hopes>

Also, Dresden/Ginny chest monster had me shaking my head when I read it, too.

Personally, I smiled when read this, because it reminded me of this one-shot with Harry, Ginny and Aliens.

It seems we will have changes in more little things that we expected if Harry will burn his office. And I'm curious, was there any mention of his payment for office being risen in books after Death Masks?

 

Well, Susan was there iirc, but that doesn't give us evidence that she was aware of Martin's plot beforehand--of course, we have no reason to believe she wasn't, either.

Is anyone else expecting Martin to be the first to turn on Dresden, and then end up very dead?

 

I expect the opposite: Susan will turn on Dresden and Martin will wind up in his corner in very Morgan-esque fashion.

The first chapter, with Mac giving his barkeeper-turned-wise-old-man advice harked me back to the thousands of cliched openings I've read in the fantasy genre. Frak. I disliked the 6th book of Alera. Hope this one doesn't disappoint as well.

 

Like I said, the kid is a lie. IIRC Dresden's mostly kept afloat with his Warden paycheck these days, the PI funds barely cover for the office.

 

I'm not sure, but that's probably right. I mean, SI has had what? Three or four budget cuts by now? We know they can't really hire Harry often. And the number of people who need a wizard (especially one who doesn't do parties) can't be that high in a world that generally doesn't believe in magic.

 

Yea I was rereading Small Favor the other day and at the start when he first meets Murphy she mentions that the SI people had been paying out of their own pocket when they needed his help recently.

 

When I read the line that Susan and Harry were through with each other...I nearly screamed with release.
No getting back together there I hope, the cut made was to deep to even scrape over properly, let alone heal.

I personally don't like Susan and in my opinion we will maybe be lucky enough to see her get killed of in the book...for the 'greater good' of getting Harry there were he should be (wherever Butcher believed this to be).

I like the first chapters so far and am looking forward to some good old fashioned Dresden-style fighting.

To be fair, he has been doing a lot better with his control lately, and I reckon he might be able to fight without burning the building down... Possibly.
