About fucking time. I will never forget Kincaid's statement that he had never seen a wizard really cut loose. That was how many years ago and how many lessons with Molly that probably helped Dresden as much as it did Molly. Dresden loves to use fire. I suspect this will not be the last building to burn.

At first I was thinking that yeah, Harry was getting old... but he's what, late 30s? I didn't think about the Demonreach thing but now it's gaining momentum in my head. Though... is he really connected to it when he's not there? And if it's affecting him this strongly how much time has he spent there? Eh, probably over-thinking it.

    Kickass chapter of course.

Did I miss something with why Martin might possibly think Harry wouldn't want them to get the information? Or are we supposed to be confused on that part?

Edit: Crap, this is the last sample chapter isn't it? Son of a bitch.

Let's see...Harry was 25 during Storm Front, and born in October. Changes is also in October and is...yeah, 11 years after Storm Front. Late 30s. Nonetheless, keep in mind what Harry makes his body go through. He's like a late 30-ish Football Star. Remember that healing of his is only in the long term.

Also, he thinks Harry might have done it.

Probably. Jim Butcher is Dresden's age (and basically my age, to within a year or so). I suspect he's just writing himself and his own "shit, that stupid injury I forgot about bugs the crap out of me now" moment into this story.

I wouldnt read to much into this. As others have said Harry is getting older and has been through some serious shit. He might have thought he just tweaked his knee at some point and it was more than slightly messed up and its coming back to bite him in the ass.

Martin thinks Harry might have abducted his daughter and given her to Ariana? WTF? Or did you mean something else?

I mean, it's clear that he thinks Harry might have sabotaged their attempts to get the information, but what I don't get is why he thinks Harry might have done that or would have any reason/motive to do so.

It could just be instinctive distrust on Martin's part, seeing Harry as a member of the White Council that have generally been so apathetic regarding the war that Martin has been fighting for a century.

Or Martin could be working for the RC, and trying to wedge Susan and Harry apart.

Also: the rent thing has got to hurt. Duchess Ortega has a nasty sense of humour.

My take on it is that Martin suspects Harry of sabotaging their attempt to get the Red Court files as revenge for sabotaging the duel against Ortega. He was pissed off at Martin for forcing the continuation of the Council's war against the Reds, and got revenge by denying them data that could help their war effort.

We can see it as ludicrous for 2 reasons: 1) Harry's family issues and 2) we get to see/read Harry's thought process. Unfortunately, Martin has no knowledge of either, thus it is a logical, if strange, conclusion for him to reach.

Same reason people suspect Susan or Martin could have done it. Harry hasn't seen them in years, and they've changed a lot. In the same way, they haven't seen him, so the same applies.

Also, keep in mind that trading away ones kids isn't unusual in the DV. Hell, it's the first things the Sidhe ask for.

    What Martin meant.

Was that he thought Dresden used that much power to ruin the data to spite them. he doesn't understand dresden's character motivations, and probably assumes he doesn't care that much about his kid, that he's never met, or never even knew existed.

Great opening four chapters. Quite possibly the best opening to a Dresden book so far. Fast paced. Just hope it doesn't drag in the middle.

On the subject of the kid, I can't say I'm convinced of her existence yet. However, I'm willing to give Butcher the chance if Dresden does indeed have a daughter. I didn't like the inclusion of Mouse in Blood Rites, but he grew on me in the following two books. Same thing may happen here.

And now the wait. Eleven months until the second paper back edition is released (well, around about that long). So, approximately 8000ish hours until I own the book... Obsessive compulsiveness wins out.

Well, at least this time it wasn't Dresden who razed the building to the ground... he only set one floor on fire :D

The last line of the chapter is awesome :D

Don't do that! Get the hardcover from Minotaur on Collins (your from melb? if not minotaur.com.au) it's going for around $30ish. Once the paper back comes out sell the hard copy on ebay or sell it at a second hand book store. Do it!

The knees thing. Speaking from the experience of someone who is in the Dresden-zone of height, the knees get a lot of impact, especially running up nine stories.

Aah, got it. I mean I realize that the reader knows a hell of a lot more about Dresden and his motivations than anyone else in the story itself, but even then trading his kid off is too big a leap.

But that Martin thought Harry might have done it out of spite? Yeah I can see that. Harry wouldn't, of course, but I can easily see how Martin might come to that conclusion. Or something similar.

    Thanks for clarifying.
