I don't hate Hermione based on bad fanfiction. I hate her because of her characterization in books 6 and 7, which while written like bad fanfiction don't, in fact, qualify by the strictest definition of fanfiction. *Note that I'm actually a fan of pre-HBP Hermione*

There are a few people on here with Hermione hate, but I don't think any of it stems from fanfiction unless you are talking about a new member, but I don't really think they count. It's a rather odd thing to say about people on here especially given the fact that there is a thread dedicated to H/Hr fans on here.

As for Neville, I never really saw him as that confident even in book 7. I'm sure JKR meant for him to come across as such, but I just don't see it. Yeah, he was brave in a rather stupid way, but it only came about when he really didn't have much of a choice. I think people tend to overplay his contribution to the story.

I don't see him as being any more confident in the last book than he was in the first book. The reason being that scene at the end where he was clutching that sword after it was all over. Unless, I am remembering incorrectly that scene paints him as someone who isn't all that confident. At least that was the impression I got from it.

Am I the only one who'd rather see him have portrayed Harry in the books at the later stages? Dude at least looks like he could do some damage. Harry was meant to be decent, if not good (for his age), at dueling. Instead we get the fuckwit with blue eyes and the height of shite.

Neville still looks a bit too much like... Neville... even with the stubble and the grey-scale.

Well, regardless of this he would still make a better Harry Potter than Radcliffe did. Pretty much anyone would make a better Harry Potter than Radcliffe did.

I have a friend who went to the same primary school as Daniel, actually - he absolutely hated him. I think he was jealous. :awesome

Like OMG I so hate Gin... Neville too.

Really though he's just a character. His nature in the books makes it easy to make him Harry's next sidekick/fanboy. Hell whats next those damn Creevy brothers and their cameras.

This is one of those things that can go either way - it's entirely up to the reader, because of what Rowling failed to show. She was locked into her 3rd person limited narration, so we were stuck watching Harry camping around the countryside. Neville might have actually shown some more mature leadership at various points during the year, but we weren't to know.

Personally, I think the book would have been better if she had been willing to show stuff happening with the Order members, and at Hogwarts, etc. The middle of DH had no momentum at all, and it could have been filled with other characters, carrying out more organized forms of resistance.

Hmm - there was a scene near the end where Neville was sitting at a Great Hall table: "He saw Neville, the sword of Gryffindor lying beside his plate as he ate, surrounded by a knot of fervent admirers." So he did keep the sword with him after cutting Nagini's head off, but I suspect that most people would do that, including Harry. People in the HP universe seem to revere swords that fall out of hats.

    (Somehow missed this... so bump.)

I like Neville, I don't have a problem that he's frequently used to replace Hermione and Ron since by and large I think a lot of us have this notion of them [born of canon] that they're the two extremes to push Harry into the middle, ie:

Hermione is studious and goody goody and interested in magic, and..

Ron is lazy, doesn't mind fucking off and breaking rules, and considers magic largely passe.

And between the two Harry's character finds some balance. What I like about Neville is that he gives an author a way to break this mold (or as I'd call it: a bullshit construct born of amateur writing by Rowling) and just have a mate or a war buddy or whatever really suits the fic.

That said, Hermione/Ron -can- be done well. For a good Hermione see Out of the Night, and a good Ron doesn't spring to mind but the shit has been done. It's just way too few and far between given that we're so used to the canon default roles.

DLP-wise we tend to change Harry but not a ton of effort is dedicated to changing the others - when not only Harry is made more relatable/likable but so is say, Dumbledore, that's when fics really shine and get a large following imo. The (now cliche) manipulative!everyone is largely born out of Harry changing but all the rest retaining their default canon roles with little to no sympathetic explanation being offered.

Which is a long way of saying bros before hos, I like Neville's potential for fanfic and understand why so many authors instictually choose him over reforming the trio into something that doesn't suck hard.

I just find him overused. This generic characterization of Neville as Harry's best bud is almost universal and its gotten very annoying with every fic under the sun (except specific genres) has it.

Do you have some specific axe to grind here? Is it that you think writers are shoring up Neville instead of trying to redeem Ron's character? Admittedly, Neville is an easier sell.

What little personality is presented for Neville makes him the most sympathetic nerd-character in the bunch. Harry is the one whose life you might want to have (minus the torture and lost parents), but Neville is the one that more likely represents the average reader- shy, uncertain and unpopular with very understandable flaws. That his situation is still somewhat tragic but his limitations seem correctable makes him a prime candidate for a believable loyal sidekick. Get him to step out from Augusta's skirts and give him a matched wand and he'll be the golden retriever of friends.

Also he reminds me of a Dickens character in some ways, making him the perfect touchstone to the era the Authoress was trying to evoke.
