Looking through my music collection, I've realized that I've a lack of sad songs - outside the country genre that is. So I pose this question:

DLP, what is the most tragic/wistful/nostalgic song you've ever heard?

Hmm. Like you, not the sort of thing I listen to that often, but off the top of my head:

Tragic: What Sarah Said: Death Cab for Cutie. To be honest, type Death Cab for Cutie into youtube, and chances are you'll hit on at least one sad song.
Nostalgic/wistful: Vanilla Twilight: Owl City. Slightly biased due to falling in love with the album and not having listened to anything else in about a week, but still.
Also Eleanor Rigby.

For myself? What comes to mind initially, and this is from a long time ago, but Our Farewell by Within Temptation.

That covers a few different genres.

I don't listen to sad music, but Eminem's Stan is pretty good and qualifies, I guess.

Only in Dreams by Weezer always gets to me. I've got absolutely no idea why.

I'd also recommend The Golden Age, by Beck.

 

For pure sadness it's gotta be Pyramid Song by Radiohead.

For nostalgia I would agree with Dry Your Eyes Mate.

 

Don't have a lot of sad songs in my music collection either. Only one that really comes to mind is by The Offspring

In the unlikely event of my own suicide, this will be blaring as I depart from the flesh. Not so much because it's a sad song, but because of the raw power the song possesses, which starts slowly but builds to a cathartic conclusion in its final four minutes.

Not particularly sure why, but I find it really moving and sad.
