I read this a couple of days ago, and loved it.

God dammit, on the 2011 release date. :(

Eh, at least we have a release date now. I've been waiting for this for a year and a half. I'll have to re-read Name of the Wind again though. Shame that :D

I'm reasonably sure the original release date was April 2009, so a bit of an expansion on that, but if it means it's polished then I can live with that.

At least it's a trilogy and not something more ongoing. Don't need more long-running series that only have new books every several years.

He claims it's a trilogy. So was Eragon (4+/-) and Wheel of Time (14)

I think he also said somewhere that he actually had the entire story written as one massive book, but that no publisher would accept it until he chopped it up (I'll try and find a quote shortly). If that is the case, I think he can probably stick to the trilogy...maybe.

Ha. Every damn time, Blaise. You got that saved in your Joe File?

That photo (and a few others) got me a signed original manuscript of The Name of the Wind from Rothfuss. Which are selling at the moment for 800 GBP. That's $1204 USD, bitch, for a few whore shots in front of the camera.

Shit's only gonna increase in value.

    Yes, and no.

I was on my work laptop (therefore no DLP Member pix), and thus had to resort to my bawse memory and Google-Fu.Type in "captain joe name of the wind patrick" in a Google Image search bar. First page, second row from the bottom, second picture, young son.

Because Name of the Wind is fan fiction. The second two stories are never gonna get published.

I have the book beside me and as of writing this I've read a few chapters.

Kvothe/Kote pisses me the fuck off. Vash had it right when he called him a Gary stu.

If that was strictly true then I doubt the release date for Book2 would have been pushed back two years.

Read the book in a day, loved every chapter of it. Kvothe has some slight garystueish elements but then again, who wants to follow a mediocre slow learner? With his backstory and what he lived through, he had to be a genius to make it through and the world is great. I enjoyed his character and what he lived through, the writing was excellent and it helps that thanks to the authors blog, I am a fan of him as well since he seems like an incredibly cool dude.

Can't wait for the next book and I can advise every one to read it.

Are there any Fanfics for this?

Also did anyone else want to beat some sense into Kvothe for how thick he is when it comes to women?

Hindsight is always 20/20 when it comes to relationships. From his perspective, and knowing the future, Kvothe seems to be incredibly dull headed. However, I could see myself having the same kind of issues in his situation.

Finished this yesterday. Picked it up after seeing it in Waterstones and remembering lots of people here liked it.

I loved it. I even loved the slow bits in the tavern. The way he crafts an atmosphere and creates characters is amazing.

I didn't have a problem with the "Gary-Stu" aspects of Kvothe at all. While he is brilliant, he also does enough stupid shit to keep him human.

I did find myself longing for some stability in the story, once he was at the university. It was just one thing after another, constant upsets, constant worrying about money. I'm hoping there's a timeskip between Book 1 and 2 so he can actually spend some time at the university learning stuff instead of having adventures. It got to the point where I was scared of reading the last 100 pages or so of the book, just because I could feel the inevitable disaster looming overhead.
It turned out to be not so bad at all, and I was quite happy with the ending. So I worried for nothing. Damn the blurb on the back saying he would be expelled.

The most disappointing thing about the book is actually the world. The characters and the plot so far are great. But the setting is a bit uninteresting so far. It's beautifully realised, but pretty much an average mediaeval setting.

The magic system I have mixed feelings about. I love the detail and the nature of sympathy, and the way it's presented as a kind of extension of philosophy/science. But at the same time, it's not the kind of magic system I get excited about in the same way as the HP magic system. I'm not spending time thinking about the possibilities of the system, or daydreaming fanfic about it. It's a beautiful sculpture to look at, rather than a cool sandbox I want to play in.

Naming is pretty much your standard Wizard of Earthsea fare, from what I can see so far. Though I liked the veiled philosophy hinted at when Elodin was discussing it. "Thing in itself" and all that.

I also love the Chandrian. If I were younger, I think I'd be genuinely scared by the book.
Particularly the bit where Kvothe finds his murdered troupe, and later on when Kvothe sings the Chandrian song to Denna.

EDIT: Warning: don't read the Wikipedia page on Wise Man's Fear if you don't like spoilers. It's not massively spoilerish, but still gave more info than I wanted. It's basically an overview of the entire book. Grr. I wanted a blurb, not a summary.

Wise Man's Fear is coming out March 1st and the some of the first reviews are out. He has one linked on his blog http://blog.patrickrothfuss.com/

I'm actually looking forwarded to this more than any other book this year including the new Dresden. The Name of the Wind was excellent so hopefully he can keep it up.

Thanks for the bump, otherwise i would have totally forgotten about it with the release of The Crippled God and the Ghost Story at the same time.
