DLP's Library vs. Know It Alls ("The Very Best Harry Potter Fanfiction Recs")

    DLP's Library has 1,220 fics if you include those in the Recycling Bin. The Know it Alls have over 2,500 and profess to have "The Very Best Harry Potter Fanfiction Recs". They also appear to have a bunch of slashfics and undesirable hetfics (e.g. SS/HG).

    Naturally, I was curious to see where the two might intersect and to validate DLP's superiority. :p

    Basically, I took the list of titles in the Library and compared each title to its search results on the Know it Alls site. After manually removing false positives (due to multiple fics with the same title, multiple review entries on KIA, etc.) I arrived at a list of 15 fics that have the dubious honor of being listed both in the Library and at KIA (links are to DLP thread):

    Accidents Happen by thistlerose - 2.33/5
    Across the Universe by Mira Mirth - 3.3/5
    A Year Like None Other by Aspen In The Sunlight - 2.56/5
    Despair by Jeconais - 4/5
    In Blood Only by E.M. Snape - 3/5
    Inevitable by Mhalachai - 4.38/5
    Resonance - 3.59/5
    Sherlock Holmes and the Ravenclaw Codex by Pavonis Mons - 4.65/5
    The Naked Quidditch Match by Anya - 4.13/5
    The Next Great Adventure by abby - 3.67/5
    The Only One He Ever Feared by jjtaylor - 3.91/5
    The Torch by Rhetor - 3.55/5
    Tom Marvolo Riddle Potter by SisterDear - 4.33/5
    Voldemort in the Loony Bin by mahaliem - 3/5
    White Knight, Grey Queen by Jeconais - 3.5/5

    Pointless, I know. But it's interesting to see the huge divide that exists in HP fanfiction...an intersection of only 15 titles is really, really small. It seems like most of the KIA recs are all on some sort of journal-based site, whereas the DLP recs are mainly on FF.net.

    If you're interested, the Python code and comments are in a pastebin. If you want to run it, you need to install BeautifulSoup.

    Hmm... I'm going to take a closer look at this - I'll post as I get results. Applying to be a 'rec'cer' right now - let's see if we can get some of the real greats into their Library.

    There goes my belief that DLP's 5/5 fics were at least a bit universal outside of slash-only communities.

    Only one 5/5 fic in the 15 you listed, out of the 90-odd 5 stars fics I counted in the library list.

    ... :?

    Assertion: If it contained the best stories in all HP, it would have a category for the scientifically proven best pairing.

    Fact 1: Harry/Fleur is the best pairing.
    Fact 2: This site has no Harry/Fleur category.

    Conclusion: It cannot contain the best stories in all HP.

    That is all.

    Heh, after glancing at KIA, I'm not so surprised anymore. Who the fuck has a JP/JPjr section ?

    Also, Sesc, I'm impressed at your ability to quote yourself after 2 years, winful as that post is. ;)

    Is it my imagination or is that site the Harry Potter/online equivalent of a Harlequin Romance book club?

    "Hi! Literotica won't make us a sub section, so we trolled for the steamiest smut about magical teens having sex. Enjoy!"

    Why would you compare them to the Library here?

    The 'best' is a definition laid down by a community. That community isn't us, make it go away. -_-

    They claimed to have the very best, and I was interested in seeing how much overlapped with DLP. It's entirely possible that a lot of Library fics could have been there interspersed among everything (now I know that's not the case).

    You did explain that at the top- I was momentarily stunned into confusion by them having 6 Draco/Lucius fics and the only Harry/Tonks has Draco in the middle.

    Abandon Hope, All Ye Who Enter Here.

    (EDIT: 28 Draco/Ron fics? Really? Did they even read the books?)

    Are you talking about how to run the Python code?

    K, here's the update - got an email back from one of the mods on that site. They say they are 'considering' me, but personally, I don't think they'll go for it, primarily because I won't be able to give them the 'slashy goodness' they crave.

    And I think I just threw up a bit in my mouth.

    Honestly, it hardly even seems worth it. Good riddance to them.

    Ah, ok. Here is a step-by-step Windows guide from the beginning for you and everyone else who is curious:

    1) Install Python (follow the steps in the installer, etc.)

    2) Download BeautifulSoup

    3) Get 7-zip or equivalent and extract the BeautifulSoup file twice (tar.gz -> tar, tar-> folder). Side-note: 7-zip is the best archive utility for Windows. Seriously.

    4) At this point you have a folder with random python files and you're thinking that silverlasso is spouting random bullshit. Fear not! Copy the BeautifulSoup.py to C:\Python27\Lib\site-packages (if you have an older version of python, use Python26, Python25, etc.)

    5) At this point, there are several ways to run the python code from the pastebin. While on other platforms it might be simpler to use the command line, on Windows it's much easier to just use a nice GUI program. One of the better ones is ActiveState's Komodo Edit. Download and install it, and use it for all your Python needs (it's good for code-editing in other languages, too).

    6) Run Komodo Edit, make a new file, and copy-paste the raw code I wrote from this link. Save the file somewhere as a python file ("dlpkia.py" for example).

    7) Finally, we can actually run the code. Either go to Tools -> Run Command or hit Ctrl+R, and a little box will pop up with a blank entry box that has an arrow next to it on the right. If you click the arrow, you can see there are many different options; just click on the one that says "%F: file path", or simply type in %F in the entry box. Hit enter or press run, wait for several minutes, and the results will be appear in the "Command Output" box of Komodo Edit. BEFORE YOU RUN IT, THOUGH, READ THE NEXT STEP

    8) Since running the code while take a while (there are >1000 titles in the Library, and each of these has to be searched on the KIA website), decide how you want the results to look. If you want the results to appear in a pretty list instead of ['Result 1','Result 2'], replace the "print final" code at the bottom with

    Code:
    for x in final:
        print x

    and you'll get:

    Result 1
    Result 2

    Addendum: If you want to just test the code, replace the "len(dlp)" from "for i in range(len(dlp)):" with "30". This should be enough to get 2 matches.

    ---------------------------------

    And that's it! Incidentally, the following code will print a list of all the fics in the DLP Library:

    Code:
    import urllib2
    import re
    from BeautifulSoup import BeautifulSoup

    page = urllib2.urlopen("http://forums.darklordpotter.net/library_list.php")
    soup = BeautifulSoup(page)

    for tag in soup.findAll(href=re.compile("^http://forums\.darklordpotter\.net/show")):
    	contents = tag.contents[0]
    	print contents.strip()[0:contents.find(" by")].encode("utf-8")

    If you want to save the list directly to a file, use this code:

    Code:
    import urllib2
    import re
    import os
    from BeautifulSoup import BeautifulSoup

    f = open(os.path.expanduser("~") + '\Desktop\dlplibrary.txt', 'w') # see note after the code box

    page = urllib2.urlopen("http://forums.darklordpotter.net/library_list.php")
    soup = BeautifulSoup(page)

    for tag in soup.findAll(href=re.compile("^http://forums\.darklordpotter\.net/show")):
    	contents = tag.contents[0]
    	f.write(contents.strip()[0:contents.find(" by")].encode("utf-8")) + "\n")

    Note: The first part of that line is the home directory, and the next part is an example location to
    save the file. Using 'w' will create an entirely new file with that name (or overwrite an existing file
    with the same name). 'a' will append to an existing file, 'r' will open for reading, 'r+' will open for reading and writing, and using no option at all will automatically open as if it were 'r'.

    The Python Tutorial is useful if you are a beginner and are interested in learning Python.

    I would just like to point something out.

    Number of DLP fics (ie fics that are actually readable) - 1220
    Number of Harry Potter fics on FFnet (at the time of this post) - 455,279

    My god, what a depressing picture this paints.
