I just read the first chapter of the sequel and I'm looking forward to the story getting started in earnest. Honestly, this is the most interesting characterization of Harry at a young age that I can recall ever reading - and his relationships with Dumbledore, Hermione and Katie are all handled very well. I can't wait to read another chapter - although, I guess I'll have to anyway, right?

Yes, it has. I don't know how to react to this chapter, it's certainly different from just about every other thing I've read, and different is good. However, I still have a rather strong urge to punch her in the vagina.

 

The most ridiculously 'out-there' characterization of Hermione's parents I've ever read...it floored me for a moment.

 

This chapter was good. We get a good reason why Harry decides to save Ron,Dean and Neville.

I really like the characterisation of Hermoine's parents even if it's "out there". Also, Katie is now beginning to annoy me.

 

Harry turns out to be complete opposite of what I'd hoped for when beginning VINCET. Hermione's parents' characterization was very weird, but fine.

 

Really? Because the end of this chapter is quite clearly a mirror of the Knights of Walpurgis.

 

Indeed, they've been playing up the parallels between Harry and Riddle a lot this chapter, even discussing it outright in Harry's thoughts at some points. That kind of put me off a bit, since I prefer my lead characters to be aware of how seductive the power they're grasping for really is (though since he's only a second year I suppose I can give him a break).

Hermione's mother reminds me of Marten's mum from Questionable Content. Bondage fetishist porn actress; she just has that vibe about her. That threw me for a loop the first time I thought of it, but it's definitely one of the most original characterisations of her I've ever seen (and they didn't call her Jane. Thank Fuck).

All in all this has been a rather jarring chapter for me, and quite predictable in the way it went (including the fledgling love triangle between Harry/Hermione/Katie), and it felt very much like filler despite the hints at future plot. I'd give this chapter a 4/5, probably.

 

Filler about sums this up. Well, filler and slight annoyance. Katie's characterisation bugs the shit out of me, and Hermione's mother's characterisation just seems like an attempt at an anti-cliche (hey let's go totally different for the sake of difference!), really.

The most interesting bits are Harry's thoughts on Riddle/Voldemort and Lockhart's influence and/or political capital. Maybe it won't take so long to get another update, and the plot quality will pick up as we actually get into the story.

 

Yep, pretty much a filler chapter. There is little development of the plot, other than some insight into Harry's character, where he contemplates on the power that Lockhart holds over the masses.

I did not particularly like Katie's behaviour, the dialogue at the very beginning of the chapter felt quite off, as if Katie was being deliberately obtuse. There were also a few logical inconsistency in the story. In the last paragraph of the previous chapter, the author says that it is the last day of the vacation, whereas in the latest chapter it has been a week since that day and they are still on vacation.

I'm uncertain about Hermione's parents. If they serve the plot later in the story then I can understand if not then it feels as if the authors want something bizarre just for the sake of it. Though, I lol'd when I nopticed what they did with the names of Hermione's parents. Usually, it is Dan (Daniel Radcliffe) and Emma (Emma Watson), in this case they reversed the genders, Danielle and Emilio.

The idea of holding friendly duels at Hogwarts at the end of the chapter was quite good and the plans of forming a group seems interesting, though I won't like it very much if the authors make the group members too competent and useful.

Overall, I'd rate this story and the first one 4/5, might increase the rating later.

 

These bastards need to write faster dammit. Months between updates just doesn't cut it.

What.The.Fuck is the deal with Hermione's mum? That was the most out-of-left-field characterization I've ever seen for her parents, and I've suffered through (too goddamn many) portrayals of them as free-love nudists, for fuck's sake. Just... damn.

I *really* need to go back and read VINCET again, 'cause I was all but lost when I started reading this chapter, but was too excited about actually having an update to worry about something as silly as refreshing my memory about the backstory.

Anyway, as for the chapter itself, I was pretty disappointed. While I agree that Katie's actions grated on my nerves, I do like that Harry had analyzed his reasoning for going after Hermione and, subsequently, Ron, Dean and Neville. The fact that Harry went to great lengths to appease Katie spoke volumes (I think) about his feelings for her, and his anger/disgust with how she acted around Lockhart could be viewed as further evidence of his feelings, but one could also say that the lack of actual jealousy was also telling. But maybe I'm reading too much into that as well.

Someone mentioned a budding love triangle between Harry, Hermione and Katie, but from the way I read the chapter, Hermione's feelings for Harry wouldn't be reciprocated, at least not at this point. Every part I read seemed to have Harry thinking of her in terms of current and potential usefulness, not in any kind of relationship way. That could all change of course, and often does as friends become more than friends during the process of growing up, and as a fan of HHr, I'd welcome it. I'm just not counting on it or even expecting it.

Overall, I'd rate the chapter as disappointing filler, but only just. 3/5 because the overarching story is fantastic, and this chapter might turn out to be more important than it seems, or more than just filler at least.

 

Did Katie act like that previously? I guess I should re-read VINCET, since I don't remember her being that bitchy.

While the portrayal of Hermione's parents is pretty bizarre, it does explain the personality of Hermione (that clingy attitude and general inferiority complex she seems to have) in this series pretty well, which I believe may have been the main point of the meeting. I think that will be the last we see of them since I see no other use for them, at least in VULTUS SERPENTIS.

So, I reread all of Vincet, before reading this.

Firstly, the first couple of scenes read really weirdly, I kept thinking that something was off in the first quarter of the chapter or so.

Second, woah at Hermione's parents. Very very interestingly different.

Katie wasn't.. too bad. But can we please not have a bitchy fight between Hermione and Katie?

Don't like where those two seem to be headed.

Apart from that, was pretty good.
