Hey guys and gals, I'm slightly worried that someone's asked this sort of question before, but as I can't find the previous thread...

Whilst moving my pc back from Uni to my house my bog-standard came-with-the-pc mouse gave up the ghost. I'm temporarily using a silly wireless usb one, though I'm searching for a replacement. So, does anyone have any decent recommendations for new mice?

A gaming one might be cool though I'm not really looking to spend more than £20-£25 at most. I have an affinity for lasers rather than roller-balls (if they still exist today) but otherwise that's it. Can anyone rec me anything good?

 

Whatever you do, don't buy a wireless mouse if you plan to play games. I tried, and after about half a year, the mouse crapped out from over-use. Not to mention having to replace the batteries every couple of weeks.

I use the Logitech MX518. I've had mine for ages now, haven't had any problems. It has good sensitivity, but it has a weird shape - even now, I still find myself switching hand positions every couple of hours. It hasn't been uncomfortable in the slightest, but you may have problems.

 

I use the same mouse and it is fantastic. I tend to use the claw grip on my mouse, with the base of my palm/wrist on the mouse pad. Another good one is the Microsoft Intellimouse 3.0.

 

It's the best mouse ever, period. I have been using (abusing) it for two years now and it still works and looks like I bought it yesterday. The two sidebuttons are good enough for me since I don't like binding stuff on my mouse anyway, I use them to go forward and backward while brosing the internet.

It feels really good to hold and has good responsetimes. The best part is that it is so cheap though, 20-30$ should get you one

 

If you want a gaming mouse, the Razor Naga can be a really good choice. Been using it for a while and I like it.

It might exceed your budget a little bit, but damn is it worth it.

I'm on my 2nd Intellimouse 3.0... I've got a very unforgiving tiled floor that eventually killed my first one after a good 3 years of use. Drunken gaming is fun, even it if does mean that the mouse can fall off your desk...

 

I don't care what i'm playing, I'd never want to use that mouse. :/

If you can't play it with the two clicks and a scroll wheel, I don't want to play it. :/

 

You can get a razer deathadder original for around that price on ebay. If you're right handed then you really can't get much better for fps/twitch gaming.

 

3000 DPI is overkill. I played competitive CounterStrike, which required very precise aiming, and I had an 1800 DPI MX518 that I toned down to 1200DPI because it felt better.

 

Logitech g5 is awesome. Very good feel to it, although a little above price range. If you look though you can probably find a good deal somewhere.

 

I've been loving my Logitech G9x. I got it at a good price, $50. Very responsive, gives me a wide range of sensitivities, and very very comfortable in my hand.

 

Wireless gaming mice are now as good, if not better then normal wired mice. Unless you get a dirt cheap one.

Did I mention it comes with a bunch of extra feet, and the ability to charge it while you play via this little awesome magnetic plug? Got a LCD screen on the side of the bitch to boot.

 

I recommend the Northern Grasshopper Mouse (it eats scorpions!) or, for sheer looks, the Kangaroo Rat.

I used a Logitech MX-518 (FYI, it's a high-def LED), past tense, simply because I had the opportunity to get a new laser mouse dirt cheap (Black Friday). I moved the MX-518 to my spare PC, but as far as I know it still works as well as the day I bought it. It's a good looking mouse too.

I never used the application switch button because I didn't install the Setpoint software; I've heard that it causes all sorts of problems (fuck it, that's what alt+tab is for), however the fixed sensitivity +/- buttons still worked, which was handy for games.

However... I don't like smooth buttons because they start to feel cruddy after a bit (especially if you're busy cramming snack food down your gullet while you're gaming ).

Now, I'm using a Logitech MX-400. I can't use the side-to-side action on the mouse wheel because, once again, I haven't installed Setpoint, but other than that it works great, looks good, and has a nice matte/satin finish.

My only issue is that it has rubberized sides and, frankly, I use my mice so much that no amount of rubberizing can stand up to it. The coating wears off in relatively short order (for anyone who doesn't buy a mouse every stinking year), leaving behind that smooth surface that I hate. It has worn away under my thumb and where my finger rests on the other side.

Oh, and the feet have worn off of it, but that happens, especially with as many miles as mine have on them (considering the 'miles' stat wasn't working for me in Whatpulse until May of 2009, I estimate this mouse has at least 400 miles on it).

Of course, I've been using it many hours EVERY DAY since November 25th, 2008, so go figure. Other than the rubber coating and feet, it still works fine.

Both mice have what I would consider to be reasonably comfortable ergonomic architecture.
