Where did JKR write Harry as Harold? I've never read anyone uttering Harry's name as anything but that in canon.

Harry's full name is Harry James Potter. Harry is not short for anything. If it were so then during the trial in the fifth book they would have called him a different name.

I always get annoyed when authors substitute his name for something else in fanfics. It's a different thing if he is taking an alias but outright changing his name.

 

But if you name your character something else (cough, cough, Rahkesh) you can do whatever you want! It doesn't even matter, suddenly there are no limitations! Disbelief can be suspended to the farthest possible degree! It really is quite amazing.

 

I don’t know why you guys start this useless tread, everyone already know that Harry’s real name is:

Harold James Potter-Black Gryffindor Slytherin Ravenclaw Hufflepuff Myrddin Pendragon Le Fay Cullen .

 

You forgot 'Snape'.

 

It's common knowledge.

Though Pendragon would be totally awesomesause.

 

If I wanted historical name dropping I'd go read the Wheel of Time series again. The only name I want to recognise in Harry Potter is Merlin, and only then as long as he's dead and stays that way... And hasn't left any powerful magical relics behind for Harry to be destined to pick up.

 

And it gives a bit of Roman flavor. :awesome

 

That said, Harry is a stupid name. It's dreadfully common, and that they would bequeath it to their son is one more mark against Lily and James.

Anyway, the name Harry doesn't really stand out, which is in line with JK's portrayal of Harry being someone the readers can connect with. It has connotations of being normal, unassuming and plain. Nothing more, nothing less.

 

It should also be noted that when Harry is undercover/in-hiding, his alias should never include the names James or Evans.

Seriously, how does everyone get fooled when new kid, James Evans, comes out of nowhere?

 

I distinctly remember a fic where he used 'Flash Evans' as an alias. Google doesn't turn anything up, however.
