" Harry learned to pick locks, pockets and horses"

Dogbert is always good for a cheap chuckle.

And another night spent procrastinating :s

Well, anyway. Re: Life goes on.

If you like Harry/Tonks and/or Harry/Fleur, definitely check it out. I'd say it's a light-hearted little tale, except Voldemort runs around killing people. But between Harry's easy attitude and nice characterisations of Tonks (who for once isn't declaring that no one wants her True Self (TM)) and Fleur (who isn't dating Bill), it's a right decent read. Plus, the story opening is one of the more awesome ones I've come across. Talk about a hook, lol.

I've gone on and finished Ring of Gold and I'm now partway through Amulet of Stone. At this point, I'm not going to start reading any other stories until I've finished this one. It's well written, well thought out, and seems to be well planned. It's long, but it includes lots of information in a way that doesn't lead to infodumping, which is spectacular.

This topic is open for non-HP material, correct?

The Basement by Marz1. An old story that I found to be pretty good.

That was a good story up until Harry became a werewolf.

Journey Through the Dark: Chapter 1 fails hard, the rest is good stuff. 0/5 + 2*4/5 ~ 3/5.

Seriously. All of Hogwarts including Gryffindor abandoning Harry annoys me to no end, especially as I was right -- there was no reason, plot-wise; the story would have worked all the same if it had been (from Gryffindor) only Ron and a bunch of others like it was in Canon. The main motive was to justify new friends (Krum, Neville, Susan) for Harry and create the atmosphere in which Harry grows up rather quickly, and you can do that without declaring stupid absolutes ("ALL of Hogwarts" and "everyone").

I was actually wondering if the author was trying to pull my leg when he had Harry declare that it made no sense that all Gryffindors had abandoned him. Well, no, of course it doesn't -- that's what tends to happen if you write nonsense. Was he making fun of himself there? (The author, not Harry :?)

The rest, as pointed out, interesting plot and a brilliant Dumbledore. Made me glad I skipped the first chapter, eventually, and continued with it :s

The writing is clumsy as fuck. The author desperately needs to stop referring to Harry as "the teen" every two sentences.

The politics are awful awful awful. Harry outwits the Lord Lestrange by attacking the reputations of Lestrange's imprisoned family members. Lord Lestrange's actual response is to incoherently splutter, "Why you little...." Jeebus. Dumbledore applauds him for this stroke of brilliance.

Oh wait it gets worse. Harry's all like TORTURE IS OKAY BECAUSE WE'RE THE GOOD GUYS. Everyone agrees immediately, except for Hermione. Then she gets attacked and almost raped and realizes how foolish she's been! If only we've been torturing random suspects more frequently I'd have been okay! After all, sacrifices have to be made!

The author seems to have no idea that the rhetoric his protagonists espouse is thoughtless and vile. Don't read unless you like GlennBeck!Harry.

Note that I haven't read the fic in question, but that line made me laugh.

GlennBeck!Harry, now that's something I didn't expect to ever see.

Ok, Journey Through The Dark was updated again. And chapter 4 blew goat nuts. There were one or two cool pieces, but overall, its very unimpressive.

Seconded on Ch. 4 of Journey Through the Dark blowing nuts. The author has not only made Harry unlikeable for me, he's also turned me off Susan. Harry's blatant "what's in it for me" attitude, while somewhat plausible, is annoying to read for me.

    Dropping this fic.

I thought so too. But the last two chapters made me want to take a power drill to my forehead. It's like Harry went from Canon!Harry to AngryThor!Harry which was actually fairly decent. Then he went to AnnoyingNineYearOld!Harry with his stupid questioning of Odin and the author's inability to remember which character was speaking. At one point Odin and Harry sound like the same person for several paragraphs. (Formal speaking and all.)

I'm just waiting for Malfoy to switch sides because Voldemort lied to him.

I couldn't even make it through the last chapter without being bored to tears. Good concept, but awful execution.

Which annoys me because I came up with this idea a while back. Even wrote the intro. Then I said, "Man, this idea sucks."

For the Greater Good has been updated twice, and I still love the underlying premise. However, I do wish that the writer had a bit more technique.

Huh, you really think so? o_O This chapter was no different than the one before. More to the point, Harry wasn't different than in the chapter before >_>

Of course he's taking the "what's in it for me" stance. That's what Dumbledore told him to. And of course Amelia and everyone else is scheming. That was the idea of fic (and the reason I read it) :s

Susan was surprising, but in a good-twist kind of way. The world's cold outside, baby.

So eh, I enjoy it thoroughly, Susan, Harry and politics. Sounds like a great recipe if you ask me. Special mention of Ginny -- I like her, good job; as well as the handling of the Voldemort/Graveyard scene. Here the author did what he did not in the first chapter -- he changed Canon to fit with the new circumstances, and wouldn't you know, it worked and made sense. Easy as.

What I didn't like so much was the thing with Fudge; seemed a bit over the top, and since when is he reduced to sputtering after a simple slip of the tongue? And "Harry uses Wingardium Leviosa to fly over the maze" was lame, but now I'm nitpicking.

My memory is short, the first chapter was yesterday so who cares: 4/5

Yeap, chapter four of Journey was pretty horrendous. I'm done with that fic.

Concerning Wizards was updated, too. Good stuff there, even if it feels a little too slow for my tastes. I have high hopes for this story.

But all through the most recent chapter, I kept wishing Harry would just jump out and try to destroy the damn ring. This chapter was too much character building and not enough plot advancement for me, even though it was necessary for later chapters.

So you missed his attempt to destroy it with Fiendfyre, then? As much as Harry remaining hidden offended my sense of melodrama, he actually made the sane choice in trying to do it without the others knowing.

Oh, I didn't miss the fyre bit, and that scene gave a very good sense of things to come. I'm just saying in general, it feels a little slow. That's not a horrible thing, just a personal note. And definitely the sane choice there...attempting magic with that kind of power while in plain sight of that many skeptical people could do nothing good for his reputation.

Nice to see Concerning Wizards isn't abandoned. I'd like to see a bit more plot movement by the next chapter though. <.<
