So a friend just gave me this book and I've started reading it. So far looks like teenage angst, poor humor and over-used vampires in romance. Plus it's actually recommended by Stephenie Meyer.

The question is, has anyone read this book/series? Is it worth reading or should I put it in my library, right beside Tess Gerritsen's Gravity and Brent Weeks' The Way of Shadows?

Suuuure. It'll fit in perfectly next to your copies of Twilight and Robin Hobb's crap. :/

Haven't read that Robin Hobb's guy yet, but I can safely say I didn't like Twilight.

    @ Boo, thanks.

    Anyone else read this book?

Yeah, no real faith in that author.

Don't read her Farseer Trilogy unless you can handle incredibly depressing books. She seems to love misery.

Really, Robin Hobb is that bad? She ranked fairly high on the "best fantasy series" list. Sucks, I was actually looking forward to read them...

I rather enjoyed the two Assassin series and the Liveships trilogy, although it's been a while since I've read them. Not perfect, of course, but still worth a read. The main problem, as said, is that they're far from cheerful (and you may not think that a problem, of course).

That's what I thought. Wasn't this the author whose fanfiction was tricking people into thinking they were the real Books 5, 6, & 7 at one point?

For that matter, wasn't this the fanfic author that got caught plagiarizing all of the fanfic novels anyway? (I was never sure if that was just an allegation or if it was true)

Recommended by Meyer isn't making me excited either, though I haven't read Twilight.

I read one trilogy by Hobb. The Soldier Son trilogy. It was crap. I've heard that her other books are a lot better, or some of them at least, but I'm not going to find out. Better than crap can still be crap and there's plenty of other stuff on my to-read list.

I read part of the Draco Trilogy, and I think her original series is better. (I'd hope so, considering she dared to publish it.) ...on second thought, I didn't like the Draco Trilogy much, so I guess that doesn't mean anything.

Spoilers for the Mortal Instruments below.

The Mortal Instruments is definitely a girl-oriented series, being all about Clary (who has a name which sounds suspiciously like the author's) and how she fell in love with her brother who wasn't really her half brother but adopted by her evil father who she didn't know until she came into her magical powers. Hey, summarized like that it looks kind of like those Hermione-is-a-pureblood-and-Voldemort-is-her-dad stories.

As horrible as I made it sound the series itself isn't bad. Claire makes a bit of an attempt to change up the boring old vampires, werewolves and humans thing by centering it around Shadowhunters and tossing in fae. The plot is fast enough with solid twists, but is quite predictable half the time. I'd say give the first book a shot, and decide if you want to continue from there.

It's clichéd, but solid urban fantasy. If you can overlook the rather annoying protagonist and the occasionally awkward writing, it is quite decent. At any rate, I enjoyed it.
