    You're trying to hard.

And yeah, that could work. Honestly, this isn't a terrible idea, but would require some very high quality execution. Inception wasn't just a good story, it was also a highly visual one. It will take some effort to make it work in mere text.

IdSayWhyNot takes the blame for my latest plot bunny - the Potter family has an ancestral Hallow, but it's not the invisibility cloak. Armed with the stone of resurrection, Harry has the addictive ability to see his parents, and raw power of necromancy at his disposal.

He's unaware of its necromantic powers at first, but gradually begins to discover them, to his awe, horror, and fascination. When he kills Quirrell at the end of his first year, he accidently begins to create an inferius by wishing he could undo what he had done. With no body to animate, it comes to nothing, but his power is unlocked.

The next year, Harry fails to save Ginny. He still manages to defeat the basilisk, and destroy the diary, but it's too late for the Weasley girl. His desperation and new power, combined with that of the resurrection stone, tears her soul back into her body. He has succesfully brought back the dead - everything seems well, at first, but her body was nevertheless dead. Magic has reanimated her corpse, and pulled back her soul, but her growth has stopped at eleven, her magic beyond reach. As this becomes apparent, she degenerates into first the Weasley family squib, and then a psychotic woman trapped in the body of a child, driven mad by her own situation.

The dementors are fascinated by Harry in his third year - and here is where the story truly picks up, moving beyond a few flashes of canon divergence, that would probably be shown in one or two chapters before moving onto the bulk of the fic. As creatures synonymous with death, but unlike it, they are both drawn to him and afraid, as he can do the opposite of what they can; he brings existence to the dead, and they take it from the living. After mastering the patronus charm, Harry attempts to imbue it with his father's soul. He succeeds, and creates a corporal Prongs, but the dementors soon suck out the stag's human soul. This leads him into anger, irrationality, and when Pettigrew is captured, Harry lets Sirius kill him. Lupin transforms into a werewolf soon after. Harry needs aid, needs defended, but is unwilling to resurrect Pettigrew. He animates the corpse, but refuses to bring back Pettigrew's soul. His first inferius is created.

From then on, he cannot deny who he is slowly becoming.

    Harry Potter: necromancer.

^ I fully and wholeheartedly support necromancy stories.

I'd rather see Ginny become a senseless inferi straight away rather than it being a drawn-out process, though. Giving her all that attention just seems counter-productive to me.

She wouldn't be given much attention - she'd be unable to perform magic at all, and so would get shipped off home. It'd just be something eating away at Harry's conscience, a lingering guilt that he didn't understand, and a gradual realizatin of her horrible situation that paralleled Harry's fall into necromancy. The point of Ginny is that she isn't an inferi, but a sort of stepping stone.

I don't think I have the flair to pull this off. If I did, I'd be writing it this second. Maybe I'll stick it in as a challenge, if anyone's interested.

I'm out of thumbs up --many good things today -- and that idea merits one. It needs some polishing perhaps, like that thing about Ginny, but the premise looks good. I wouldn't mind writing it, if I didn't have a story posted, a challenge that might turn into something else, and another idea for a fic I want to take a stab at when I'm done with these.

I thought I was gonna cringe and expect the rocks when I read this was partially my fault, and I was disappoint, in a good way.

Just go ahead and write it. Who knows? You might have it in you.

EDIT: Turns out I had one to spare.

For sure. Too many good things popping up lately, both here, in the WBA, and in the TGYH thread for me to take on any more projects. Keep overburdening myself as it is. But yeah, the HP necromancy idea is a fascinating one, and could be sufficiently effective and gut wrenching if done well.

I don't remember seeing a DF bunny thread so I'll toss this up here.

This is probably more of a kill off fic idea than anything, but who cares, it's also shamelessly inspired by Nuhuh's AB crossover.

In the DF verse, we know that there are were 3 major vampire courts, something that has been mentioned by either one of the Betas or JB himself over on his site is that there are actually several (2-3 IIRC) small ones that are inconsequential in the grand scheme of things. Suppose that these courts have spent the vast majority of their time avoiding being stomped on by their larger cousins and the various other factions in the world. After the war with the White Council and Red Court heats up one particular group sees an opportunity to grab some extra power for themselves.

So fast-forward to sometime post Dead Beat (maybe just preChanges for even more interesting happenings) Dresden, as a Warden, gets reports of a Necromancer operating in the open in St. Louis, conspiring with Vampires and, even more galling, they are including mortals in their business. We all know what two things that Harry hates more than any other thing in the world.

Meh, maybe its retarded but I've had a half assed idea like this in my head for awhile.

Okay, here's a crazy idea I've been batting around all day while I should have been studying, and I think I'll start working on it after I finish my main WIPs: a HP/Pokemon crossover.

It follows the premise that Tom Riddle traveled widely during the course of the years between Hogwarts and his rise as Lord Voldemort. During those years, he encountered a highly secluded archipelago deep in the Pacific Ocean, magically shielded and hidden from the entire world with a mysterious labyrinthine enchantment. Mystified and intrigued, Voldemort barely manages to break through the unbelievably powerful barrier, only to encounter a young trainer on the beach with a cruel streak a mile wide.

After tense minutes of testing each other, the two strike a shrewd bargain: in return for a favour to be called in at any time, Voldemort will assist the young trainer in the crafting of the first Dark Balls, infusing each Pokeball with a powerful Imperius Curse. But when Voldemort realizes that despite the trainer's arsenal of powerful beasts, he possesses no magic himself, he leaves the island to continue his exploration and search for new magic.

Fast-forward to the summer before Harry's fifth year at Hogwarts. With a competent and prepared Order resurgent and pressing on Voldemort's plans, the Dark Lord needs an edge that not even Dumbledore can predict. So he calls in his favour, and requests an arsenal of the strange beasts that he encountered on the island from the trainer, reminding him that the Dark Balls Voldemort had provided had given the trainer a powerful edge.

The trainer, otherwise known as Giovanni, agrees, and orders Team Rocket to begin their biggest Pokemon operation yet.

This shit is epic. Must be written. Naow. Post a challenge if you don't wanna write it, but someone must write this ASAP. I'd do it myself, but I'm not all that good at writing to be honest, so I would not be able to write this as well as it deserves to be written.

I'm giving it a go. Keep your eyes peeled in WBA in a few days time - I may need some help sorting out the kinks.

Would you like some fries with your zombies?

If you do write it, I'd seriously recommend extending Necromancy to more than inferi. Zombies are both boring (as characters, they rate somewhere just beneath pets, which at least have some semblance of personality) and weak (so long as you know a decent fire spell you're fine).

Yeah, I would help you with that. :awesome

This. While you already have the whole "imbued JP's soul into a Patronus" and "resurrected Ginny into a sapient, unrotting inferius who goes insane", I'd say that there are many, many more things you can do when you have powers over death and life. Just off the top of my head, perhaps HP will be able to "sense" souls, thus detecting people near him, and maybe he might even distinguish between different souls, rendering polyjuice worthless when used against him.

Again, just a quick example off the top of my head. Spend a little time thinking about it and you'll probably come up with some more ideas. Hell, maybe HP can heal himself by taking the life force of others, or something.

What about being able to control or manipulate ghosts?

Or he could slowly work on building an army from the resurrected corpses of the hogwarts population. :awesome

Voldemort's resurrection takes place in a graveyard. Just struck me... Then again, a giant divergence would take place after Pettigrew's death, so that whole thing just might not happen.

Also, Voldemort is some kind of undead wraith before his resurrection, right? He'd better watch out in that case. A direct confrontation like what happened in first year wouldn't be an option while he's still dead.

Some of this has now been written, if anyone's interested in playing beta for it while I scrawl out the next. ~hint~

And I has many delicious necromantic tricks up Harry's sleeve. More suggestions will always be welcome, though!

Edit: Voldemort is going in a very different direction from canon. He'll be coming back far sooner than the end of fourth year!

@CareOtters: is that meant to be the start of the story, or just an extract?
