Comcast service?

I'm in Michigan, and looking for a good ISP. Right now I'm using Wide Open West, which is okay in terms of speed (15/2 mb/s), but there are significant issues in terms of service. Specifically, if I start downloading anything, my TV services goes to absolute shit.

Now, Comcast offers 50 mb/s down for $100 a month, which sounds absolutely perfect for me. I'm wondering if anyone can share their experiences with the service. Am I likely to get full speed constantly, is there a service I can opt in to avoid their 250 GB/month service cap, etc etc.

    Thanks.

We never had any issues with Comcast service and I had the whole cable/internet/phone deal that worked together and nothing ever seemed to disrupt the others.

I think we were on a middle speed plan at like 12mb/s but always got about 22ish so we got our moneys worth.

The customer service was always decent too, that's a plus sometimes.

Man I really need to switch back.. AT&T blows.

Uhg, I'd rather get a plan with unlimited bandwidth than a insanely high speed one without unlimited. Maybe its just my insane amount of streaming/torrents but i hit up to 300gb a month. Thank god my ISP has a 30$ maximum overuse charge which makes my 16mb/s plan only 80 bux a month instead of 200.

Well yes, that's part of what I'm worried about. I use my internet allot, in fact it's mostly replaced my TV. However my girlfriend (who's moving in with me very soon) uses the TV constantly. When I'm torrenting, or even just updating Starcraft 2, or w/e-the TV absolutely grinds to a halt. I can only assume this is because the service has been oversold, and perhaps the node can't handle the required bandwidth from the surrounding area.

It would also be hard to get used to a 250GB cap. Right now I'm uncapped (as far as I know), and I've hit 1 TB a month sometimes (though it's come down significantly since then, I regularly use about 400gb on average). 250GB wouldn't cut it, so I'm hoping I could either get into a business plan, or perhaps pay a little extra for no cap.

Finally, I game allot, so latency is also a worry. Right now my latency is absolute shit, so I figure it can't get much worse unless I go sat service or dial up which isn't going to happen.

Sometimes I wish I lived in a larger city area, where there are tons of ISPs available =/.

Comcast does have the 250GB monthly cap, but they don't always enforce it. We got dinged with it only once.

I am currently on Comcast Business Class internet. It costs slightly more per month, but I get no caps and a free domain name and a bunch of other benefit - plus amazing customer service.

There's a joke in the title of this thread somewhere...

It's been a while since I've used Comcast (given the very apt nickname of Comcock), but the only thing they'll likely serve is their bill up your ass with a nice side of boots. You'll be lucky to get anywhere near their advertised speeds.

Then again, I'm probably biased...We had rather bad service. (Probably because it was some company running under the parent name Comcast, but not actually Comcast. Internet was down more than it was up, and probably slower than satellite. This was a few years back, however...things could have taken a turn for the better.)

You gotta see it from his point of view, Pyro.

    I think I understand now.

Anyway, called comcast up and told 'em to install. Worst case scenario is that I get substandard service and stick with them for the required six months. They have a business line which was relatively inexpensive, so no cap at least.

I'll finally be able to download from my seedbox at a relatively decent speed =D.

Also-Thanks for the replies. Pretty much confirmed what I thought (service depends more on location and the knowledge of the local tech support), but at least it's not blind.

Question: is that $100 a month for the duration of your time with Comcast, or only for 6 months/ a year/ some shitty amount of time?

Initially for the business class they wanted more like $190. However when I was on the phone I said I was looking to change but wasn't quite sure if I was ready, the rep offered me 50/10 mb/s & TV service for $140 a month with a 6 month minimum lock in.

Not too bad really considering what I'm paying now. It's only like a $20 increase or so.

For 50 mb/s that's legit. I'm asking because I wanted to see if you could get FiOS in your area, but similar service is like $149 a month. There's probably a discount if you bundled it, but I doubt it'd last more than a year.

(Fukken thievery. GoogleFiber needs to hurry the fuck up.)

Make sure your making the distinction between 50 mbit and 50 MB/s. 50 megabit is also written as 50mbps. When you're talking about a rate in megabits, you have to divide it by 8 to get bytes. So at max you'll get around 6.25 megabytes per second.

Yes I know, I just often forget to write it correctly. If there was a provider near me that offered 50 MB/s, I'd be willing to give my first born for it...
