    Same here.

I remember I tried to pick up the story a few times. Some parts are really good, but overall the annoying moments, Sirius, Draco, etc, were too much to keep my attention.

Up to now the author has written over 2 million words - and almost all fics are somehow related to her "Dangerverse". That's impressive in itself. Nevertheless I'd like to invite her to a DLP Draco killoff.

I started reading this in May and left negative reviews on ffa. The author has sent a polite reply via email. I've just emailed her to ask permission to post her reply here. If I get it, I'll post it. In summary: I have read about half of the first story and it's not DLP library worthy.

    EDIT:

Got permission from the author to quote her here.

I think this part directed at my purely negative criticism will serve as default answer to what DLP may say, if we're impolite (which is probable).

In my review I said that the protagonist has fixer-sue qualities, superpowers, fluffy soul bond twu love with the author's romantic interest and that in canon Hermione is ten months older instead of two months younger than Harry and is precocious so description of her as a toddler are jarring for no reason.

I asked "Are the sequels wish fulfillment fantasies as well?"

The author believes my and DLP's main point against the series is the fluff.

For me personally, the reason I didn't even finish the first story wasn't because it was happy but because I was annoyed far too many times and I've found out it doesn't get better.

From memory, I think that the series picks up quite a bit after the shaky start, but definitely could have better pacing and deviate more from canon, at least in the first two years.

On the other hand, I can only see Snape and Draco redeemed believably if the former gets sorted into Ravenclaw or something, and if the latter's parents get removed from the picture early on. So the author seems to have the right idea on that front.

Those here who don't mind OC seers, Founders' Quarters, everyone needing a partner, Family Bonding and all that mushy stuff may want to take a look at this to kill time.

@Silverlasso -- yeah, this is the story that you are thinking about.

@Wolf -- I'd agree it's not library worthy, but I think it's worth the recycling bin and I think we can rec stories we personally rate for that. I hope you get permission to post her reply, would be interesting to read.

So far most of you seem to more or less share my thoughts on it at least. Thanks for responding.

I remember trying it once, and hating it.

Would of loved to enjoy it, since there is so much content, but I just couldn't really handle it.

The Dursleys taught Harry one thing, there are those who have power and those who desire it. He knows which one he wants to be. Post GOF.
    Harry Potter - Rated: M - English - Adventure/Drama - Chapters: 7 - Words: 39,799 - Reviews: 138 - Updated: 10-6-10 - Published: 12-14-09 - Harry P. & Daphne G.
    http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5580668/1/Power_Play

The story itself isn't bad, it is political and so far Harry has been operating from the shadows, building alliances slowly and what not, the author is aware of cliches and has stated that he will do everything in his power to avoid them, and so far has done so. What's also refreshing about this story is that unlike most Harry/Daphne stories, there is no declaration of love within three chapters, in fact, we don't know anything about her, she's appeared in one scene in 7 chapters, and in that scene she seems annoyed to be in the presence of Harry, it's refreshing.

However, the story has some major problems; the biggest being that I don't think the author has any plans on where the hell he is going with this, I get this impression from how he writes. The chapters seem rushed, they contain many grammatical and spelling errors that will annoy a lot of people, and these mistakes would be taken care of with a beta.

    Yeah, I'm following that one (and you're missing a Link :p) and I'd say it's perfect for this thread. The beginning I think I remember to be a little odd;
    killing Sirius
seemed a little unmotivated or perhaps rather, too rushed to make sense, but it's getting better after that. I kinda like it now, only the spelling is terribad.

Want to see where this goes. And that author better had a plan :/

Shit I knew I forgot something, however,
I think the reason Sirius was killed off was because Harry needed to inherit those titles that Sirius left to him, I'm thinking they should come into play in the future.

Apples, Brooding and Crosswords by SirLordWhatever. An amusing little H/L oneshot (~1500 words) that's a bit of a play on the typical post-war brooding/betrayed Harry story. The proofreading isn't great and there's nothing exactly groundbreaking, but it has one of my very favorite Luna scenes in fanfiction.

The Lies That Bind by Zephros is actually good if you read it all in one sitting. It's up to chapter nine and I ended up liking this Harry. Maybe those of you that didn't see it go full circle should try it out once more. Also, Harry snapping during torture made sense, it was far more believable than a Harry that never screams and brushes it all aside from the get go.

    I'll give it a 4/5 and I think it's library worthy.

    Link?

Anyway, I remember reading it up to chapter 4 or 5, so I'll get up to the last one before giving it a review.

Edit: Well, the way I see it, the story lies in a crossroad. It will either go downhill fast in the next couple chapters, or become just the kind of guilty pleasure fics some in DLP enjoy. I mean, Dark-Harry moar Daphne Hotness? That's some win right there.

That said, I hope the author do not make daphne as meek as it seems she will be. Sure, Harry is badass enough to enforce it, but I take no joy out of reading that for a lenght of time.

    Oh, and no harems, please.

Oh lord, not this one again. I tried reading this one a bit ago, and if I remember correctly it fell into every plot trap that every other bad H/G story already had.

    It's not H/G, it's H/D with Dark/Insane!Harry (eventually).

    As I said:

And that goes for any number n-1 chapters, where you have to read chapter n to understand it.

That aside, no, it really is horrible. The way it is set up, there is no excuse that Harry is still alive after chapter three. Not a single one. None. Voldemort kills Harry, the end. What the author does is raping logic in order to force his plot. If it gets better later on, then the author should have done what I suggested, and started the damn story later on. Maybe I'm feeling particularly uncompromising at the moment, but currently, that story had my chance and blew it spectacularly. Perhaps when I'm really bored.

Doesn't mean I want to read about it. I'm-A-Dog!Harry is taking it way, way, WAY too far.

I'm not a huge fan of the author in terms of his work or personally. That said, he is getting better. So there might well be hope for his stories yet.

Title: Harry Potter and the Second Life (retake #2 by Joe Hundredaire)
    Author: Joe Hundredaire
    Pairing: JP/LP, SB/OFC, and LP/NM.
    Rating: Mature
Story Summary: Wishing upon a falling star, 17 year-old Harry ends up in the body of his 10 year-old self, in a world where nothing is quite the same. How will he handle being a 'normal' boy in an unknown world?

Joe Hundredaire's retake on the unfinished Silver Aegis story is so far quite good but is more in line for the Almost Recommendable thread because: 1. It's his second version of Silver Aegis's story. You may recall his first version, 'Harry Potter and the Wand of Uru.' So far, this second version of his is superior to the first one (I seem to recall Field Hockey!Hermione being used in that one as well); 2. It's Joe Hundredaire. His past history re: DLP makes nominating one of his stories for review to be an uphill battle; & 3. The story loses points for being a retake of an original, uncompleted story.

    I like the following:
Harry reveals that he came back to the past from another dimension to Lily, her lover Narcissa, and Narcissa's daughter Tara (no Draco in this dimension). He's not obviously superpowered but does have the powers he had when he was 17. He doesn't have an obviously superpowered wand; however, it is one of Ollivander's special wands.

Thus far, it's a pretty good time waster.

Is that a rewrite of the Wand of Uru, IIRC?

Yes. I'll edit in the title of Joe's first version of 'Second Life.' Thanks.
