Alright, just had an idea pop into my head. Original as far as I know, of course there has been dark!marauder stories before but I don't think I've heard of this concept.

What if the Marauders Map was actually a collaborative Horcrux? A piece of each of their souls in the map.

Considering there would be four shards of souls working together (presumably, they might be fighting against each other or something) the Horcrux would be much more powerful than any other.

Could it possess people? Could it possess Harry? Would Harry particularly mind considering he would have contact with his father? Maybe they can just sort of move in and Harry suddenly has four marauders in his head? Would they be adult marauders or teenagers? What about Wormtail? And the real life Remus in third year? Would they be dark marauders who purposefully made the horcrux or innocent marauders who just made a huge mistake? Would the map have any affect on Fred and
George?

I wouldn't make them come back to life completely with bodies and everything because that is just way too fluffy.

But come on, it makes sense, the map responds much like the diary does and it thinks for itself, apparently (okay the responses the map gave to various attempts to break into may have been pre-programmed for any situation but I can stretch that a bit) but you can't see where its head's at.

It's honestly just a thought at the moment. So feel free to pick holes.

All I really want to know is if it's unbelievably stupid or if anybody has done it before.

 

Hacking apart your soul -even just a little bit- would result in a change, both physically and mentally. Dumbledore and the other teachers (especially Dumbledore due to his experience with Tom Riddle) would notice any signs straight off.

 

Well then it'll have to be dark!marauder then. But do we actually know how severe the changes are from one horcrux? I'm pretty sure we don't see Riddle after he's made his first.

 

Or it could be that Dumbledore discovered what they did and helped them before they become fully corrupted. But then why Albus wouldn't destroy or even just hide the Map?

And let's not forget that if James created Horcrux we should have him around in a wraith form.

 

That could make for a nifty fic in and of itself. James creates a horcrux out of the Marauder's Map so that when he gets himself killed trying to give Lily some time to get out of the house he starts hanging around Harry in wraith form, since he doesn't have anyone to help him get back to normal like Peter did for Voldemort. So he decides to do his best as a father and look after Harry while he's growing up, acting like a guardian until Harry is old enough to do the ritual for him.

 

I know there's at least one story with this, don't remember which one and I read it ages ago. The idea is the innocent Marauder one, they killed some smal animal or something for the sacrifice, not quite understanding what a Horcrux was (IIRC, Sirius got the idea from a book from his home or something). Don't remember how the story progressed or anything, and yeah, it would be prone to the problems pointed out. Still, it fits your bunny. I'll see if I can find it.
