If you like random depressive bitches ranting away about dick all in the abstract, with no character, plot, or other such conformist devices driving the play forward, sure, I'll bet she's right up your alley.

As it stands, though, there's a reason she strung herself to a bathroom door - because if she hadn't, someone else with a bit of sense would have.

 

Seriously. Go fuck yourself. Have you actually read anything she wrote other than 4.48 Psychosis? Blasted, Pheadra's Love, Cleansed, or Crave? All fantastic plays. If that's what you think of her writing you clearly have no sense of contemporary drama and the imaginative capabilities it can posses, exemplified in Sarah Kane. She writes theatre as it should be - rough, visceral, and powerful.

In short, you're a dumbass.

 

Man, I can't argue with you over what you like and dislike, I was in the process of writing a good long reply that tears apart both you and Sarah Kane's 'work' (which, yes, I've read and in some cases seen) but there's no point, and I'm not going to derail a thread to try to debate with someone who is essentially arguing that character, plot, feasible stage direction, and subject matter are happily replaced by cheap grossouts, pages and pages of PMS-driven rants, stage directions like "a sunflower pushes through the floor and grows above their heads" if any at all, and five plays that are essentially about the same thing; how shit her life is. Which would have been fine, but she has the literary flair of an abused five year old.

Go buy a Madonna album or see a Damien Hirst exhibition and get the fuck out of popular culture while you're at it.

And man, I could easily write a good long reply showcasing how something like Phaedra's Love is a completely different play from Crave, how it's funny (in a morbid way) and is a fantastic modern retelling of a classical piece of drama, how the stage directions you hate exemplify Kane's idea that if it can be imagined, it can be represented on stage. All it takes is an imaginative director. What she pioneered was the 'In-Yer-Face' theatre, writing that does not allow for passive response, but forces an active engagement on the part of the audience.

I'm not gonna keep going with that. You clearly don't have any sense of what theatre is/can be, and so it is pointless to argue with you. You don't have the capacity for it.
