    Great episode.

As soon as it was revealed that Sam didn't have a soul, I absolutely knew there was going to be a Dexter reference in there eventually. I was not disappointed.

This season is not as good as last, but I'd have to say it's better than all the ones that came before it. Easily.

    Random thought about Purgatory:

Hell is where the damned torture and are tortured, interactively, for all eternity. Unless God sends your kickass Guardian Angel to haul you out.

The human part of heaven seems composed of individual cells (not pocket universes, as that idea implies entire, complex universes) pulled directly from the soul's memories. In Dean's case, happily playing with his adoring little brother. In Sam's case, a defining moment that set goals that he'd intended to become his life. For Ash, it was his home and all the math he could possibly want. We met a girl (I don't remember her name) whose heaven was an unending party.

The downside of Kripke's Heaven was that it left no room for growth. You got there and were suspended like a flower in a glass paperweight. Happy, empty smile frozen on your face for all the rest of time.

Maybe Purgatory is more like *I* picture heaven, with people interacting as much as they want, playing or talking or withdrawing temporarily for quiet. An idealized city, in fact. Family and friends and ancestors, forming a massive and continually growing web of Light. All my favorite authors, musicians, artists of all kinds, all still creating...

Random thought about Cupids and their angelic power:

If Mary and John were together for no reason other than cupids forcing them, I wonder if that bond broke when they both died? Being literal, the cupids carved sigils on each lover's (I nearly said "victim's") heart. The soul was untouched.

Which I just realized might be why John went so far overboard into insanity/monomania/vengeance upon her loss. He *couldn't* heal. The cupid said that they had to put an extreme amount of effort into forcing them together. Perhaps that compulsion was what drove John into a revenge quest that drove the entire rest of his life.

And they weren't particularly well suited. In Dark Side of the Moon, remember that Mary and John were fighting, and he'd moved out?

Mary is in heaven, unless that was an impostor who was coached to imitate her.

    Random thought about Mary

I still think that there was more to Mary than we ever knew, since SHE was chosen to be the mother of the preordained Vessels. Canon is pretty clear that John's seed has a 100% chance of producing Vessels, but that means that any woman would do. Why go to all that effort to tie Mary Campbell in particular to John Winchester? Maybe that will be addressed this season.

I think mary is a actually a red herring here. We have been led to believe that gram pappy sam was resurecting Mary but did he actually confirm that or let dean and sam assume what they will.

Maybe he was asking for his wife back, or some third party.

I fully support that the mary we saw in the heaven scenario was actually her.
It makes it all the more creapier as to what the angels could do for their own amusement. It really is like a drug cage. Forced to exist in idylic memories never interacting with anything or anyone else unless you were soul mated luckily, and even then stuck with that person for eternity.

Maybe Purgatory is like Earth 2.0 where you do whatever you want and your free of the rules of heaven and hell.

Maybe, but unless I misunderstood the Alpha Vamp, all of the vampires, werewolves, and etc. go to Purgatory when they die. It doesn't sound like a great place to go.

    ^This

Where are you guys getting this idea its like Heaven in any fashion at all?

The one and only thing we do know about it is that every single bloodtirsty human killing monster that ever died is in there. Personally that doesn't sound like my interpretation of Heaven at all, don't know about you guys though.

    No, they'd go to hell.
Purgatory is where you work out your sins, your fairly minor offenses - not sufficiently evil to get you damned, but too stained to reach heaven. Perhaps that werewolf girl that Sam knew in S1 Heart is there. She couldn't bring herself to suicide, but she wasn't about to spend the next 60 years as a serious and ongoing threat to her neighbors. She basically committed suicide, but Sam pulled the trigger.

Or maybe I've forgotten my Religions class.

The Alpha Vampire said word for word that Purgatory was where they all went. I'm not seeing much wiggle room in that statement.

...But not in supernatural. Supernatural purgatory is for monsters.

Fuck, even in christianity, purgatory doesn't even come close to being like any kind of heaven. It's like hell lite.

Technicly interms of the supernatural universe, your soul can get butt raped by a bored angel while in heaven with no justice as you are a worthless meatsack in their eyes.

    That don't sound pleasent either.

Hell you can get promoted to demon and eventually move back up to earth by cut throat capitalism.

Purgatory is the only unexplored place thus far. Remember the soul meant something, we don't exactly know what that could mean to a monster in purgatory.

Maybe its the only place left to find peace in the after life. I'm anticipating the brothers will end up fighting against heaven and hell for whatever reason to keep purgatory free of their ideas and methods.

Consider it like africa and demons and angels are the religious missionary

    Or

    This is Religious Net Neutrality.

Their could be Porn in them their Purgatory. If that Aint wornt protecting i don't know what is.

Is it? I've never heard it described as such. In Catholicism, its based around purifing yourself of your sins, because you're ultimately destined to go and be with God in Heaven. So you're basically taking a long ass hot shower. Eastern Orthodox slots everyone in Purgatory until the Final Judgment. Anglicism officially doesn't believe in it and neither does Protestantism as a whole, so individual sub-sects might. Neither does Lutheran or Methodist, but Anglo-Lutheran does.

But really, who cares? Supernatural runs on its own mythos, liberally borrowed from reality's own and its own creations.

Okay, I think soulless Sam is growing on me a little. He was funny as hell in this episode.

The fairies were awesome! And I love the X-Files shout outs. WTF was up with the dude that was following Dean though?

Why did the fairies Dean back? I got interrupted right then. Was he the only returnee?
And I'm back to enjoying watching Sam again (intermittently.) I find it hard to believe that he would be so easily distracted from a Hunt, especially with Dean missing. He might not be emotionally involved any more, but he certainly knows the value of a skilled partner.

Great. I was in the mood for a new quote.

    Fight the Fairies!

The only explanation we got for why he was returned was because he put up a fight and whoever was taking him didn't expect that, and I think the guy following was a hit man of sorts because of Deans escape or whatever.

Sam's reaction made perfect sense. He spent awhile trying to find Dean, and during off hours hooked up with a chick. Where a normal person would be sleeping or up all night worrying, Sam spent the night with a hippie waiting for the morning.

Good episode. Soulless Sam was great, and "Fight the fairies!" was lulz. And that guy following Dean throughout the episode? Let's see... Bright red hat, unshaved and stares eerily at his victim... I'll go with garden gnome. Bonus awesome points for Richard Woosley, Leprechaun.

The longer Supernatural goes on the easier it is to crossover with the Dresden Files :awesome

Seriously, anyone else get a vibe for that?

I've had that for seasons now. Except for the vampires thing. And the skinwalkers. And the witches. Oh, and the angels/demons relationship. So no, not really. :awesome
