...which supports my point. Taure's idea came before Celestin's. I thought he had mixed the two up.

Yeah, I interpreted the Riddle character in that bunny as a 'politician' more in the vein of Lucius Malfoy than Cornelius Fudge.

As said, this is predominantly negative reasoning / thinking in that you're only considering ways it couldn't work. It's fanfic; the author's creativity, a liberal dose of suspended disbelief, some quality narrative and character work, and it'd sail. There's 1001 ways to get around quirks and problems like that in a feasible, and if you have a driving plot then people aren't going to worry too much.

A politician in the vein of Lucius only gets away with stuff because he has boatloads of cash to throw around, along with his charisma. Riddle is pretty damn poor. It could maybe work if he was being backed up by the death eater families (i.e. they gave him cash for bribes) like the Malfoys (Lucius's father maybe?).

And I'm not being entirely negative. Ive always tried to come up with at least one way to make things work. Yes, people can ignore minor plot holes in a good narrative, but I think that this one is pretty major. If they know that Lord Voldemort is behind the attacks, and they know that Tom Riddle is Lord Voldemort, then it seems relatively clear-cut. The author would definitely have to find some way to deal with it.

Absolutely. The problem here mainly comes from my inability to multi-task; everything I've posted in this thread so far has been when I'm working lol.

The way it'd work is that Voldemort cannot, in any way, be linked to any crimes. He's too crafty and he delegates. Dumbledore has no link between Voldemort and the murder of figures A, B and C apart from his own intuition and experience of Tom, and is trying in vain to get people at the Ministry to treat him as a threat rather than a potential ally. Parallel to this you have Moody, not necessarily a brand-new recruit but a younger and less jaded man than he is in canon two+ decades after, given bullshit assignments by a useless Ministry and, in his spare time, trying to find a link between the baseless whispers of Voldemort by scared-stiff snitches and these murders and propaganda by using his contacts in the criminal world. Cameo from Mundungus ftw.

All the while, Voldemort is spouting pureblood rhetoric and none of the 'good guys' can figure out who is with him, and who is against him in the messy, racist wizarding world.

It's not what you "know", it's what you can prove. Law 101.

Note that no court has ever been convinced by the phrase "everyone knows he did it".

(And I think you overestimate how much Dumbledore shares his knowledge. I think pre-CoS it was pretty much only Dumbleodre who knew that Voldemort = Tom Riddle).

I'n sure Hagrid, Flitwick and the likes knew also, but for them it's only a pointless information, because Tom Riddle(as a student) is not so frightening as Lord Voldemort...

Why are we arguing again? It's a pair of great plot bunnies, and in fact the Moody one sort of resembles one I've had for a long time, going so far as to write a couple scenes. Sadly, that's more often than not as far as I get in my writing, and yet I jealously guard my own story ideas on the premise that I'll get round to fleshing them out one day, in the epic HP story I just *know* is fomenting in my head, bit by bit.

I like these ideas, and I like the combination even better. I'll say this about my Moody bunny: I envisioned a story of Moody going from care-free young H'warts student, no worries, probably smart and skating along, never having questioned the Pureblood arrogance and sense of entitlement he'd grown up in. Then he goes to school and mixes with halfbloods and Muggleborns and has to decide how he feels about this society and it's ways. I would have him in either Ravenclaw or Slytherin, personally.

So young Alastor has to reassess his thinking, but in spite of having feelings for a Muggleborn, he's conflicted and has some elitist or exclusionist tendencies. Cue the rest of the story, with my idea having the story overlap with Riddle's ime at school as well as Grindelwald and Dumbledore's subsequent rise to even more fame. I don't want to say more, on the (admittedly long) possibility I actually write the rest of it. It's more a character piece than action, which means I'll likely never feel it's ready. :(

Anyway, about these bunnies, just say it's AU and state that Riddle never let many people know of the LV petsona, or that Dumbledore is less sure than canon implies. Hell, it seems common knowledge that Riddle wasn't a pureblood, and yet everyone seems to believe LV *is* a pureblood, so it can't be too well-known that Riddle=LV, right? Just go with that and allow the reader to decide what they believe. For fucks sake, it's fanfiction - even JKR didn't avoid some massive plot holes, why should we nitpicking the fuck out of what mitt turn out to be a great read?!?

Sorry for the automerge, but I'm writing from my phone and the spellcheck doesn't work when doing that, and I just realized how atrocious the spelling was in my previous post. Sometimes the phone catches misspellings and, obviously, sometimes not. Mea culpa.

Yeah, I know. That's why I said a few posts back that the biggest problem would be for his reputation. Even if they can't prove it's him, there's still someone running around killing people under the name "Lord Voldemort." If the public are aware of the name, then they're going to start wondering.

I've kinda gotten mixed impressions of this. I do remember that no one really connected Tom Riddle and Voldemort pre-COS. However, the bunnies made it sound like he would be using the Voldemort name in politics. Also, his convo with Dumbledore in the memory in HBP made it sound like everyone called him Voldemort; if he had been hired, he probably would have asked the kids to call him Professor Voldemort. If it turns out that he isn't known to the public as Lord Voldemort (I guess this could be pre-defense professor attempt), then I could see Dumbledore not sharing if he thought he could still redeem Tom (as I said in another earlier post).

Mate, I addressed exactly that with

as in, the only whispers of the name in relation to crime would be in the criminal underworld, which is where Moody spends a lot more of his time as an elbow-deep auror than any other character. Even then, Voldemort probably wouldn't be running for office in any way - he has too much sense to try to get elected into something where he spends 24/7 in the spotlight - but would, instead, be making alliances for his gradual takeover of the planet. He'd be trying to get where Dumbledore is pre-GoF; well respected and revered, seen as omnipotent, owled by the Minister every other day for advice, and so on, whilst furthering most thoroughly his own agenda in the background.

All the same; Taure, pull your finger out and PM Celestin, and work on this idea. Nao.

Somebody should write a Rasta!Harry. With an epic wand core of the leaves of hemp, and elemental powers over smoke. I think I'm going to sleep.

You did it by going to your Control Panel (click on Private Messages), and then selecting Edit Ignore List on the menu.

Wish it weren't necessary, but some people are too fucking retarded.

This came to me from all the discussion recently regarding a true Good-guy!Harry and some super Hero!Harry and that I’ve been re-reading my Hellblazer collection and gabriel-blessings ‘On Four Legs’.

It’s not much, and probably sucks anyways, but I couldn’t think of a real plot. The plot I have is for a post Hogwarts, post Voldemort, Harry, from a background like my tl;dr post above, as an adventurer. Sort of like a mix between Constantine and Dresden. Helping people all over the world, fighting supernatural baddies, the like. I even wrote a few snippets of the same. But I’m a crappy writer and the only story I ever finished was a one-shot so terrible that I never even dared to post it.

Anyways, let me have it, can it actually work with some little work? Or a lot of work?

P.S.: Holy shit, that turned out much longer than I thought.

There's a few attempts as aspiringSupahHero!Harry running around, including NMB's bit in WbA. What you have above isn't quite that. Sure, you've got a few nudges towards nobility, but if Harry was successful in driving away bullies as a 9 yr-old, he'll stand up to Snape on the first day and call him on his shit. That's what comic heroes do- they stand up boldly and defy evil whenever they see it.

That's where the fun can really go- what sort of reaction would Snape and Dumbledore have to a not-beaten-down mini-Superman wannabe? They can't obviously crush him, as that's what Albus wanted in the first place. Meanwhile, if Harry gets away with confronting Snape, he'll lose all credibility in the classroom. Same goes for Binns- Hero!Harry would actively work to move him on (following up with all the other ghosts if he can get that one solved), so that his spirit could rest and the students could get a better education. It's much more fun if Harry causes more trouble than he solves. You don't have to make fun of him; just make sure that his quick solutions lead to bigger problems, so that he begins to mature appropriately.

If you play it as subtle as you describe, it just looks like canon with Harmony icing on the menu. Play it extreme and it could be fun. Just remember- he's eleven; villains and evil seem obvious at that age. It'll be better if every time he's standing up for something, he uses platitudes that may or may not apply.

@Wordhammer: Yeah, that does sound much better. Also, if he really gets it into his mind to help Binns move on, it could be the start of the more arcane-superhero tact I wanted it to go to.

I'd rather see an anti-hero!Harry, to be honest: it'd just be more interesting a read.
