Other than the logistics of it (Which ceebee explains), being around pokemon of a certain type alters you so you connect with pokemon of that type better & occasionally gain abilities associated with that type.

I never liked Pidgeot much. Almost everything it could do, Charizard could do, but with fire. The only exceptions I could thing of were flying very fast (not much to show it, but I could totally believe it), and being saddled.

The only thing I don't like about this story is that the chapters are too big. Most of them are longer than oneshots, and it gets a bit ridiculous when I can't read a single chapter in one sitting.

I think (hope) Bill was exaggerating with the adaptations thing, or was only talking of extreme cases. We never saw a point where Misty had gills, or where Erika got energy from being in the sun. But this element reminds me of something that happened in another novel-length Pokemon fic, where trainers took on characteristics of their starter Pokemon, and the main character's bitching Murkrow meant that he could teleport miles at a time with Faint Attack.

Poor Normal-type trainers, though. What do they get out of this? The ability to fade into the background?

 

Normal type trainers gain the ability to become practice girlfriends. Just like you got rid of that level 5 rattata when you saw something cooler.

 

Too true. I never understood why they had the Normals created. In a world of Psychics, Dragons, etc... Normals seem like a bad joke.

 

They're also the tanks of the series, with almost no weaknesses and generally being capable of learning moves from every element. In short, they're the 'I'll fuck you up, but you won't know how til I do it' type. Also, normal type moves (as in the most common type in the game) are STAB.

 

Meh. I'm a 151 guy, so I wouldn't know about later games. But I do know a level 20 (and rising) Gyarados raped every pokemon I faced with Thunder, Surf, Blizzard and Fireblast, including Normals. :awesome

 

In the games, normals are basically generalists, they can do most things to a certain extent but almost always are outclassed by a pokemon with a different type.

The exceptions to that are basically Blissey & PorygonZ which are the premier special tank and special attackers, respectively (in overused at least). Other notable normal types are Snorlax & Togekiss, which are also special tanks/attackers.

 

I raped the Elite Four with one pokemon. His name was Mewtwo and he was boss. My Gengar was able to fuck up Mewtwo, but that was only because I used my gameshark to make him pure ghost type. Ah, the good old days of yellow version.

 

No dude, I mean I literally solo'd everyone with Gyrados and dozens and dozens of Potions of all types to keep him healthy*. :awesome

*which I got through gameshark acquired cash, but still.

 

I never played through with a single pokemon. I'm thinking of doing so with a Snorlax, or something.

 

Usually, Normal-type pokemon are based around one key attribute (except for flying pokemon...) that doesn't fit any element. That allows for some cool pokemon such as ditto, the transforming pokemon, or porygon, the human created pokemon.

While other types have obvious stat strengths and weaknesses amongst the majority of it's pokemon, Normal-type pokemon do not - so you should judge every pokemon individually.

A Snorlax, Chansey, Tauros, Kangaskhan, Persian, Raticate party could fare pretty well, in my opinion - this without including the common Flying/Normal type pokemon.

In the games, Water-type pokemon trainers are usually swimmers, Rock-type pokemon trainers are bulky and so on. If the trainer is particularly talented (Koga of the Elite Four, for example, is a very muscular Fighting-type pokemon) the affect may be stronger, but I doubt anyone will be growing gills anytime soon...

The angst is realistic and understandable - and this seems like a transition chapter. Wonder who Ash will catch with the Master Balls?

I could have done without all of the angst at the start of the chapter. I get him being upset and all, but he does live in an extremely violent place. It seems slightly out of character given how he has handled such things in the past. Pallet Town comes to mind.

I think it probably would have been pretty unrealistic to expect Ash to take Misty's death well. Declaring bloody vengence on Rocket seems like the best I could have hoped for.
