I fucking hate when writers do this. It's the most goddamn heavy-handed and amateurish way to possibly go about attempting to add depth to a character, and overused so much that a writer going about this in the way you've described is a damn clear indication of when it's time to press the red x in the corner.

It doesn't keep the character from becoming a Mary-Sue. It just demonstrates that the author has no fucking imagination and can't write for shit.

 

By the way, if I remember correctly they made Exile female, because many fans were disappointed that Revan was made male in canon.

 

You mean the fangirls were disappointed because they couldn't have the Carth romance option if Revan was a male.

(Surprisingly enough, slash isn't rampant in the KotOR community - at least not the site that I used to belong to. Also, the majority of writers in said community were also female).

The reason the Exile was made female was mainly because the Atton/Fem!Exile subplot was the most popular, despite the depth that Obsidian went into with the whole Male!Exile/Atris 'betrayal' subplot.

 

I didn't say that was the only thing you should do. I just said that having him screw shit up and actually make things worse sometimes rather than having every single plan workout for him is the better direction.

 

Unfortunately in my head that brings up the idea of Harry Potter is Jesus.

Damn, that was definitely not what I was going for. I was just going for a more realistic scenario for him rather than one where everything always works out.
