Oh God, I bought the Alpha this weekend. I only stopped playing for work and sleep.

So far I've done a crap load of mining, got enough Iron to make a massive train track connecting my original log house and my new project to make a massive castle floating on an island in the sky. Think I might use boat elevators to get up, rather than use another train track.

Oh, and I've almost got enough Diamonds for a full armor set (already have a set of tools.)

Must sleep. Not enough hours in the day.

 

The beta is coming out on the 20th. If you're interested, you should buy it before then as Notch is removing the guarantee that all future versions will be free. Alpha->Beta->Final release is still free upgrades, but it looks like you'll have to buy it again if you buy the Beta.

My pet love in minecraft is TNT. Its really quite useful for clearing out a space to work with, and nothing is as satisfying as seeing things go boom.

However, TNT can totally fuck up your shit, eg. My underground base, situated underneath a lake with a 4x4 tunnel entrance through the water was grand and awesome. In an effort to tunnel down on a large scale, i put in some TNT in and thought I'd just clean it up after. I underestimated the TNT.

Blew clean through my roof (which was also the lakebed) and the walls, and the floor. It did what I wanted it to but...more. The entire room ended up flooded and my secret underground base became a secret underwater entrance to the new tower being built on the lake.

I was pretty much crushed when it happened, but I'm still addicted, so it doesn't really matter.

 

Zombie and I have done this many, many times. It never fails to be anything short of infuriating.

I'm kind of fond of my online sever, however. Three or four commands after a minute or two digging to set edit points and I can create a 10 by 7 room out of any material I want. Or hollow sphere buildings, towers, etc.

Also, TNT Protip: more than 175k TNT blocks takes Ten Hours for a server to process. DO NOT DO THIS. D:

 

The minecraft shirts are evil - I bought them and a bunch of other stuff on ThinkGeek because of them. D:

That kind of looks to me like something out of Doom. Only with a club, instead of a shotgun.

 

The lego shit is more my type of thing. Mining's cool and all, and I love doing it, but I got my mining kicks from Dwarf Fortress long before Minecraft. I tend to prefer to build shit, and also do a lot more with less.

(It says something that a giant glass enclosed staircase to a house that's chilling under the overhang of a cliff with a nice glass enclosed porch and subterranean farm lit up by a glass enclosed skylight is "subtle" and "reserved" for Minecraft players...)

 

I just never feel like I have enough iron, coal, or especially diamond. I don't even really need coal when building.

I ran into that too; just stick a light source near it, the new tile colour forces the block to refresh and you can mine it as usual.
