I like Clell sometimes, this particular story is average at best but I like Harry Potter and the Sun Source and Merlin's Reaper's not bad either

This specific story doesn't deserve a 3. It lacks a real idea with some kind of substance. You read it and afterwards you forgot what it was about besides a bland Roadtrip. The movie had a lot more memorable moments:rolleyes:

I've never been much of a fan of Clell's writing, frankly, but he does seem to have a following of sorts. Good or bad, he regularly churns out product. Speaking of fanficauthors.net writers, some might be interested in knowing that Kinsfire is now selecting any new authors on their site:

He's recruited Seel'vor (famous for some quantum leap story I've never read). I somehow doubt, given that it's Kinsfire making the calls, that many DLP writers are going to be tapped. (Regardless, I wrote him awhile ago to suggest several writers whom I thought would be good additions to the site, but I never received a reply).

As for stories, here's one that I'd probably end up ranking 2/5 or 3/5, depending on my mood.

    New story from DigiFruit,
    Title: Dearly Beloved
    Category: Harry Potter
    Character(s): Harry P. & Hermione G.
    Words: 10,494
    Genre(s): Romance/Drama
    Rating: Rated: T
Summary: Hermione is sad that her parents can't relate to her magical life, so Harry learns how to use a muggle camera to take photos that she can mail to them with her letters. Using her as a model, however, makes him realize how beautiful she really is.
    URL: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6557422/1/

For those unfamiliar with the author, Digifruit is known for his longish (10-20k word) Naruto/Sakura romance one shots (Do You Remember Love, Moonlight Sonata, e.g.). This story is basically the same style of piece, but commuted to HP. It's painfully clear that he doesn't have much experience writing Harry Potter fanfiction (about as much so as my lame attempt at Naruto fanfiction), but it's not as annoying a read as most sappy Harry/Hermione romances in the fandom. It's a cutesy "missing moment" kind of piece along the lines of what Jeconais used to write, though with Digifruit's stylistic take on it. Make of it what you will--it's not Library bound, but could be interesting for some. Almost recommended.

I hadn't realised Clell was a fanficauthors writer. Changing names like that is pretty stupid, imo. All I remember about him are a couple mediocre guilty pleasure Harry/Daphne fics.

Letters has gotten much worse than I imagined possible. Petunia is amazingly OOC:
    Nice.

And then there's the letter. The thing that struck me most is that the author decided it would be more authentic if he attempted to stick his GCSE French in there. Of course it fails miserably. Why would Fleur say "Je m'appelle Fleur Delacour" in the middle of her competent English writing? But then, she's a Frenchwoman, so it can't possibly be perfect. I know! She'll make a mistake - misspelling "one" as "won". Because she can use "compulsory" and "colloquialism", but can't spell numbers. "Ecrivez-vous Français" and "Adieu" were also pretty failtastic, but nevermind.

This pretty much sums it up.

HP/ Star Wars crossover. I found myself enjoying this story, even though my Star Wars knowledge is limited to movies and video games. its about 50k words over 3 chapters, but not much has really happened. The pairing is Aayla Secura and Harry, and moves at a quick pace. Aayla is kind of Mary Sueish in my eyes, but this story is in this thread so stuff like that is to be expected. I won't comment on the way magic was implemented into the universe as I have not read enough HP/SW fics to be critical. Oh, the story starts off in Episode 3.

It's still WIP, but it seems to be the authors current project which is nice. Grammar is not perfect, but it is pretty good. There are some swapped/missing words, but I had no trouble following along and wanting more.

Sword and Magic is a remake. The original had a few more chapters but I think the title should have always been "Smut and Magic". If you can handle the massive amount of smut the original was one of the better Star Wars crossover.

It was taken down for the rewrite, you might be able to find a chapter or 2 in WbA though. You can catch him around the forum, goes by aaltwal. I'd prefer updates on Runaway Wizard though if you're watching :awesome

I know it's bad form to do a self-rec, but I thought I'd note that this one was posted to ff.net and patronuscharm today:

    New story from Perspicacity,

    Title: Yule Time
    Category: Harry Potter
    Character(s): Harry P. & Hermione G.
    Words: 7,583
    Genre(s): Drama/Adventure
    Rating: Rated: K+
Summary: Augustus Rookwood, former Unspeakable, escapes capture at the Battle
of Hogwarts. He develops a new form of time travel, which falls into the
wrong hands and seals the fate of trillions of souls. Then, something
    remarkable happens.

I like it a lot, though I do think the line delivered by Dumbledore in which he states that Hermione will be a match for him in his prime is a bit unrealistic.
I think they're on completely different levels, in both magical skill and intelligence.
But its very interesting, and it really is excellent.

Thanks. Fixed (on ff.net, anyway) and did a slight reword of what tripped up TheGardenOfPotter. (Flying without a beta for this one, obviously).

Incidentally, fuck fanfiction.net and their uploader, which turns double-dashes into single dashes and forces authors to go back through by hand and change them all to what they wanted in the first place. Tedious.

Pers, what piece of writing software are you using? Microsoft Word, Open Office or...?

Fanfiction.net interacts with Open Office Writer the best, in my humble opinion; even if you write the actual text in another document, open up a blank Writer document, paste and then save, it'd fix quite a few of the format issues that you're experiencing. I think.

Well, it is free software: aside from it eating up a lot of memory, I've never really had any problems with it. (The 'Writer' part of the software suite, at least; I do not use the others).

MS Word 2011 for Mac, saving as .docx before upload. (I know it's heresy, but I really don't like Open Office and tend not to use it much). I'll try your trick for the next story.

To be a bit more topical, I'd almost recommend Shadow Walks by lorien829. (I did a cursory search and didn't find it on the site--if it's already been discussed, I apologize).

Summary: In the five years since the Final Battle, Harry Potter and Ron Weasley have struggled to cope with the mysterious disappearance and apparent death of Hermione Granger. There are deeper and darker purposes at work than Harry yet realizes.

Though I seldom write it, I'm occasionally in the mood to read a decent Harry/Hermione story. Lorien is a proven author in this genre, having turned out a dozen or so stories along a similar vein to this one. In Shadow Walks, Hermione's missing after the final battle. Harry and Ron fritter away their lives in grief for 5 years because she's so super-mega-awesome that they can't live without her. And Harry angsts because he never told her what he felt. Ron angsts because he did. Then, Harry discovers something that makes him think something is up and investigates. (Did I mention that he's an Auror?) The pairing is Harry/Hermione, which should tell you a bit about where the plot leads.

The writing mechanics and characterization are decent by fanfiction standards, though the storytelling is just tired. "Read one, you've read them all" applies more to Harry/Hermione than to any other pairing, even Harry/Ginny. To borrow a metaphor from another thread, this Harry/Hermione story is a CostCo mass-market product, not an artisan piece. Those sated on the former can probably leave it.
