    1 - Ridiculosity is not a word.
2 - Rand is a ridiculous character, but it has nothing to do with his omghax powah levels.
3 - That's not the point oephyx was making. If you can't understand that, you're just proving this little theory I have about the readers of aSCaL and MoR.

Christ, reread the damn thread. For some reason the only thing people that like the story can ever do is copy and paste ancient arguments and cross their fingers that everyone else has forgotten why those arguments get shot down in the first place.

We have a still-unbroken cycle of people raising the same defenses over and over and over again and it's ridiculous.

Yes it is, buy a dictionary please.

    Oh pffft.

That's what he wrote, it ain't my problem if that's not what he meant. I ain't a mind-reader. What he wrote on the page was inane and non-sensical. If you have a problem with that, tough titties.

No, because most of the arguments tht actually ridicule this story are so stupid it makes my eyes bleed.

Either your dictionary is hopeless, or ridiculosity is a British word and you live in America, or ridiculosity is old-fashioned. I can't be bothered finding out which.

There are dictionaries on the internet which you can look up, even doing a basic google search of the word should suffice.

And considering the first source of data I found for this new word was on urban fucking dictionary, I'm sure it's an incredibly genuine word that will soon fall into modern parlance.

A quick browse around the internet (cause I have nothing better to do this thursday morning, and isn't that just a little sad) shows that the word is slang and while understood, isn't formally recognised as an english word. People started using the word because it is consistent with some grammar rules (generous - generosity). So there you go, not 'officially' a word, but if I have to put up with everyone saying that they 'could care less' (a phrase that makes me physically cringe) then you'll have to put up with my use of the word ridiculosity. Why? Because I just like spreading the joy around.

You describe a phenomenon which has already occured in the past and will continue to occur into the future. Not words growing from the urban dictionary, but from slang and other informal uses into everyday formal speech.

    So you're wrong. :(

You're almost exhibiting the intelligence of the average Ascal reader. You're so close!

Depends on which bit you are talking about. I was wrong in calling her dictionary hopeless, I was also wrong in calling the word old-fashioned or British, however I was not wrong when I said it was a word. It isn't a part of formal english, but if the requirements for being a 'word' included that it must be a part of formal english than that would make all slang and informal language not words either. A word is nothing more than a small piece of language which conveys meaning, as long as the piece of language is recognisable by people and therefore is able to be understood then it is a word. So ridiculositu is a word, just not a formal part of the language.

A post knocking someone's intelligence coming from a regilar member of the DLP community LOL!

I don't see where the DLP-haet is coming from. This story is presently rated 3.23, which is right where you'd score it, apparently.

While the thread has occasionally devolved into silliness, the essential issues people have with the story haven't changed. It's an incredibly creative, ambitious effort and the writing, after her first several chapters, is decent in its mechanics. (It's good for fanfiction). Miranda does excellent action scenes and, until her recent break, she updated continually, if sporadically. I understand she had a job that involved a lot of time in the field, so she wasn't always somewhere where she could access the internet. If she wrote an original fiction novel, several of us would probably read it.

However, the ASCAL trilogy has always been poorly planned and plotted. New stuff is added every chapter--feather magic, e.g., pulled out of Tristan-knows where--much of which invalidates old stuff. Cool things of the past are forgotten in favor of the next shiny. The world isn't balanced--thread magic as described should pwn everything. There seems little that blood magic can't do, but what little it can't, parseltongue picks up the slack. Rakhesh Asmodeus is an idiotic name. Gratuitous vampire slashiness is gratuitous: "Namach sure can fuck!" The powerups of basically everyone in the series have gotten so outrageous as to make it feel like a bad manga. The story really is Namach-wank more than anything resembling Harry Potter.

It's stylish to poke fun at the story (even while we secretly look forward to updates), something you'd pick up if you'd been around awhile. That said, even its detractors would admit there's quite a bit to like. As with the two other highly polarizing stories I can think of (Methods of Rationality and Knowledge is Power), it is properly placed where it is, a near-Library quality story that makes Sree go gonzo every time he sees someone posting about it.

Protip: Forum-bashing attitudes get old right quick when it comes from a twat who hasn't been around long enough to form an informed opinion. Get lost if you believe DLP is such a plebian backwater.

No, you're wrong, as in, you're factually, objectively wrong. Wrong wrong.

Ridiculosity is a formal part of the language. A Pulitzer-Prize winning Associate Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia U. I chatted with on a college visit admitted it grudgingly, even though she didn't like it being used personally. It's acknowledged formally in the Oxford English Dictionary, the uncontested authority in the language, which most institutions in the nation with an English department pay subscriptions to.

If you don't know something, don't make up random shit to obscure your backtracking. Apparently all it takes is for someone on a HP discussion board to call you on using the term to make you doubt yourself.

    Regilar? ;)

You've been dedicating each of your posts to convincing me that you're stupid. You've actually forced me to revise my statement, as I realize I'd be doing a disservice to Darius. You've a long way to go yet before you approach the mean intelligence of the average Ascal supporter.

Quite a few of the problems people have with this story are also problems that occur in Canon Harry Potter I find. Someone had a problem with Harry building a super wand, because Rowling never gave Dumbledore a super wand and etc etc.

I'm pretty sure she said that she doesn't have notes on the story, she just writes from memory. It's a pretty good piece of work considering, but it does create a lot of problems yes.

I also found J.K.Rowling's original work to be poorly plotted as well, aswell as many others. Still an enjoyable story regardless though.

    Yes.

I'm not sure I agree to much with this, but then it's a while since I read it and my memory is fairly shoddy.

She balanced it up slightly by saying that thread masters are incredibly rare and hard to achieve, but yes the balance in power levels is a big drawback in this story (why do I feel like I went back in time 10 years and am in the middle of a dragonball z discussion?)

Nah, there's plenty blood magic and parseltoungue can't do. The fact that people keep slipping past his wards for example. It seems like thread magic and wards go hand in hand in this story.

Matter of opinion, I quite like it. Maybe it's because I read a lot of high fantasy when I was younger and therefore read a lot of books where the names couldn't actually be said with a human tongue.

Yes, I've noticed the DLP forums don't like slash. Meh, I've never had a problem with it. I recently tried Lumley's necromancy books which I found absolutely gross, and I recently borrowed a book from the fantasy section i the library which described some sort of rite using menstrual blood. In comparison a little slash is fairly mild.

Agreed, Dragonball Z-esque. Namach and that elf destroying whole planets... doesn't leave you a whole lot of places to go.

    Not necessary a bad thing.

Yes, agreed. It isn't that great..... and I can't stand Methods of Rationality, how the hell did it get so many reviews?

I may not have signed up but I've been known about DLP for a while. I read some of your threads here and there. What I have read hasn't exactly enticed me to become a member. You guys are fairly ... prejudiced on certain issues aren't ya?

Yes. It is a matter of opinion. Fortunately, everyone whose opinion matters agrees that it's an idiotic name.

It wasn't random shit and I haven't backtracked. What I said concerning words is 100% accurate as far as it goes. And while I'm unsure as to whether ridiculosity constitues a part of the formal language, it's still a word which was my original point.

Oh internet arguments, how I've missed you.

So...anyone know when she's going to post a new chapter of ff.net, and if she's never going to on there, does anyone know a site that she is updating regularly on?
