That guy actually offered to beta one of my stories. I'm not very impressed with his work, so I'm glad I declined.

Chapter 2 doesn't look any better than 1. Why are we even still discussing this here?

Jesus Christ; I'm not very confident in my own writing/plot assembly abilities, but even I know that I could write a story better than that!

Mistakes in grammar aside, the characterizations are atrocious, and even the most important plot points are skimped upon.

"Letters" was updated today and I still don't know how I feel about it. The positives of the story thus far are that Harry and Fleur meet in a unique way and are forced to interact with eachother without meeting eachother first; also it is refreshing to see a Fleur who isn't depicted as some rich young socialite whose father is high up in the ministry. However, this doesn't counteract the fact that the story is incredibly boring, 18k words and nothing has happend, all Harry has done is sit around and put forth a shitty effort to learn french while all we've seen of Fleur is her having lunch in Florence.

Just no. He's faithfully following the basic tendencies of shitty Indy Harry. Harry casually line drops that spent 11 years being raised in a cupboard? Really? He then bitches to an almost complete stranger about Dumbledore, raising issues he's never so much as hinted at to his friends. Then he thinks "Hey, this girl I've never met would be the perfect one to advise me about my problems and how my bank accounts, etc. are potentially being hidden.

Then we move into the common trope of how Hogwarts is backwards and hasn't advance since the Middle Ages, still using things like quills, while Beauxbatons is ever so modern and advanced.

Better than the previous chapters. But still :facepalm

Mostly what Tenages said. The original idea is sound, but many many points in the story are just :facepalm. Petunia's sudden change of mind, Fleur's letters (as it has been pointed out, she puts random French phrases into her letters), Harry's letters; and in this chapter, how Magical England is so backwards. The list goes on and on.

That said, the author seems to at least have the most basic grasp of English language and grammar (enough for me to read it), and I can mildly enjoy it. It's something I'm probably going to read for the sake of reading, when I'm bored.

He says that like it's acceptable writing.

The aspect of the fic where the author's having some trouble with what to write in between letters. No one can base an entire story on the letters plot alone, so the cliches are the fodder for the in-between parts, such as the redeemed!Dursleys.

The quill thing feels like the author is testing waters. If reviewers let it go and not bring up the Hogwarts, it'll be really bad and Beauxbatons will be much more progressive and advanced.

Or, he could be surprising and actually leave it at that, making Fleur's a mistaken viewpoint in a subversion of the cliche.

I read 'Letters.' There's way too much tell, very little show.

I know the letters are supposed to be the hook, but the hook doesn't work for me. I think the story would work better if snippets of the letters were used to introduce chapters.

As it stands at the moment though, Meh.

God I hate the "Wizards still use quills, OMG so backwards!" thing that so many fics use.

They use self-inking, spell-checking, voice recognising, semi-intelligent quills.

Show me a Muggle pen that can do that.

There's no reason they can't do the same with Muggle pens. Then again, there's no reason to fix something that isn't broken.

    then fix me a sammich.

I agree with Taure. This backwards thing is little too cliché, but there are some some writers who use this and the fic is still awesome. It's only irritating when they use it out of concept just to show, that they can do it...

What's with Bitchy!Hedwig? If the Hedwig portrayed in Letters was any more of a bitch, she'd have dropped a litter of puppies by now.
