Since it's the January awards, January 31st is the limit. It's a bit soon, so get writing!

I'm not much a HP writer, but I can be judgemental. Consider my hat tossed in.

Okay, fine. I volunteer as a judge, as well. (Mainly because it would be fun to read all the stories before the awards are given out, instead of after the fact, but I digress...)

Judge duty here. I wouldn't be able to write up a plotline, procrastinate until the last minute, and then write a story, in less than two weeks. Too bad, because Dark Arts is my favourite of the genres. But reading them is just as good, and anything to get more stories in.

Could I humbly suggest, seeing as how this is the first monthly awards round and you've left us 16 days to write something decent in one of the busiest months in the year, that the deadline be put back to the end of Feb?

A lot of those who were willing to submit something now won't because of the timeframe: sixteen days isn't enough time to get something decent, as in more than just abstract babble, in for submission. Several of the better-than-half-decent authors who were going to submit have said in this very thread they'd rather not try in a fortnight and not do something justice, and so may as well judge.

May I also request we get a schedule of monthly genres, so that people can start putting work in on future submissions?

I'd be happy to judge, will also start a story in case I don't judge so I'll have something to submit!

Sigh. Now everybody wants to be a judge instead of wanting to be contestant. I thought that the whole point of submitting a story anonymously was so people wont vote for Vash , Joe or Santi due to their popularity on this site, but if only a handful of people can vote, what's the point?

I thought a better idea would've been if everybody send their stories to Xiph0 via PM and he'll post them in a forum thread under different pseudonyms( Mr. Black, Mr. Pink, Mr Maroon etc).

And the story with the most thumps ups wins.

Really not the place for it.

You can, but we're not. It's not hard to kick out a one-shot and if only 3-4 people submit, it just means they have an easier time of it. It is a competition, after all. Considering a hell of a lot of one-shots are written in 1-2 days, 16 days isn't the end of the world. You even have time to outline it.

Yeah, I know it's short notice, but whatever. We got a late start on it. As for the schedule, we'll work on it.

But the question is - do we need this competition as a competition or as a way to make people write quality Dark Arts story that I thought was a main point of all of this? Right now, because of so short notice, many good authors will simply not write anything and if we are going monthly by genres, it will take some time before there is a chance to write Dark Arts story.

And more on topic - I'm ready to read and judge.

I'll tell you what, we'll consider re-running Dark Arts before we exhaust all the other categories. I can't see much interest for some of them anyway.

Yeah, I'm out. I was thinking that perhaps the deadline would be in a month or two, but no way I'm going to be able to finish something in a mere sixteen days. I'd be extremely lucky to even finish the first chapter in that time frame.

I thought the idea was a good one to get one of my plot bunnies off the ground, but not within this, quite honestly, foolish time-frame. Back to my other WIPs.

Best of luck to everyone else on writing.

Undoubtedly you're sick of hearing about it by now, but what about using the trial month/16 days January comp to let authors field General category one-shots, not the admittedly more-important Dark Arts category that takes more work and wants more people involved?

A couple of weeks for General one-shots (which there are an abundance of anyway and which wouldn't be hurt by having only three or four submissions) before hitting a potentially larger category outside of a 'trial' basis. It's Dark Arts that everyone's excited about, and you could feel the ideas brewing in the other thread. Instead of rerunning Dark Arts at a later date and risking less submissions, let the genre have its say and let those authors who were getting into the contest idea be more comfortable submitting at a later date..?

^That sounds much better to me--let people dink around with a general category to figure out how they like the system (and some of them might end up being more Dark Arts oriented) and then once we're all comfortable with it, make February the Dark Arts month.

Talked to the others, so mote it be. This month will be General next month will be Dark Arts. Judges will be announced semi-soon so the rest of you who aren't chosen can know as much.

Why the fuck does it take more than a fortnight to punch out a couple thousand words? Y'all are pussies.

Apathetic Occlumency teacher twisting your mind out of shape? Never fear, there's a charming young girl in the year below to twist it back in the opposite direction. Just hope it doesn't snap.
