It had not occurred to me that Harry Carpenter might get the sword. Oddly enough I really quite like the idea, but I still find it unlikely. Kid probably won't be more than mid-20s max by that time which feels young to me for this role unless (like Sanya) he has some kind of rude awakening to the world first.

Evil Foo Dogs still strike me as unlikely -- if it was possible I suspect we'd have heard about it from Ancient Mai when she vouched for Mouse's "testimony" based solely on the fact that he was a Foo Dog.

I suspect Murphy will get Shiro's old sword as the books are heading straight towards that, but I wouldn't be overly surprised if she was instrumental in giving it to someone else either.

    I want Harry/Ivy about as much as I want Harry/Molly to happen -- I.e. I don't.

I realize lately I have much more fun discussing the Dresden Files than I ever had discussing Harry Potter. Part of that is because DF is still in progress and HP isn't, but I think part of it is trusting that the author isn't going to do something ridiculously stupid.

Well, never say never, CT... on the other hand, Butcher seems to delight in taking ridiculous and cliched ideas, and turning them completely on their lampshades, while Rowling simply played it straight.

Any author who's willing to play around a bit and regularly winks at the audience is probably more likely to notice their own mistakes first, and try to fix them, rather than letting a billion fans down because they think they can do no wrong... say, by taking 3 extra months to finish a book.

I love the idea that there might be other Mouses. (Mice? That doesn't seem right.) Hell, maybe we'll get to meet his family in future outings.

And am I the only one who'd like to see a Sword go to someone completely out of left field? Like, say, Butters?

I thought that Ancient Mai vouched for Mouse's level of intelligence (sentience??). Besides, there is an issue with Foo Dogs powers. It would appear that they have their spiritual mojo only near the temple they're guarding (or in case of Mouse, who's cheating, near his wizard). Therefore any additional dogs in Chicago might appear simply as huge and very, very intelligent beings.

    @LittleChicago:
If Butters were to wield a sword he'd have to go through some major character changes. So far he's smart enough to come into action prepared (his vest already saved his life:)). In my opinion, as awesome as he is, he's nothing more than a sideline medic and an occasional talking head or a comic relief.

When it comes to the Fidelacchius I'll go with mainstream: Murphy. Her career in SI is over and there was more than one hint that she's welcome to wield the Sword (Sanya would be over the moon). Besides her my other, highly unlikely, suspect is Bill. He already protects the innocent of Chicago U campus, however, as I said, I don't think it'll be him. Shapeshifting is enough for him when it comes to fighting with supernatural.

So now movies of all the books could be made? Or are the rights of some still caught up with that TV series?

    Oh shi...

Something else occured to me... does Ivy get all digital data? As in knowing every line of every computer program ever written? Does she get it as a text or is it a binary stream?

It wouldn't really make any difference as she can probably translate the binary fairly easily.

What makes me wonder are digital pictures and movies, here's some food for thought:
Does Ivy get all those movies and pictures in her head, as in is she capable of unconsciously translating binary into actual image?

    Now, that's a disturbing thought.

What about audio? Does she have all the music of the world in her mind as well?

Her options for things to chill out are pretty limited... What's the point of reading a book or watching a movie if you already know it all?

@Bukay -- If Mai only vouched for Mouse's sentience/intelligence, then I expected they'd have still have to confirm that he wasn't deceiving them. Especially since Mouse was with Dresden and Mai isn't exactly his biggest fan. So I assumed her acceptance of Mouse's testimony implied something about Mouse's character as well.

But you make a good point, and it could go either way.

As an aside, I'm looking at three different articles on what foo dogs could be on wikipedia and all of them mention that they come in pairs, male and female.

Either she's intensely curious and wants to try the whole sex thing out or overexposure has burned out any interest in the subject at all.

    Let's hope for the former.

There is a thread giving a synopsis on the first 3 spoiler chapters. Here it is if anyone wants to read.

    (Chapters 1-3)

The book starts off with Harry waxing philosophicaly about dieing. Then an oncoming train intrudes on his musings and he decides he is fed up, he's already died why should he care about a train and stands in its way defiantly until someone who turns out to be Carmichael pulls him out of the way and comments about how the southbound train is moving pretty fast or something. (Later it is commented that Harry was likely to be on the southbound train rather than meeting St. Pete at ye'ole pearlies)

Carmichael brings Harry through a quazi Chicago that coulda-been that appears rather deserted but Carmichael says it's dangerous and that they shouldn't be talking out in the open. They end up going into a building that resembels a precint with CPD like things going on inside. Inside the door is a "deputy" that is standing rather rigedly and Harry is a little suspicious so he opens his 3rd sight and the "deputy" begins to be revealed as having a long sword and other intersting trappings before said deputy reaches his hand out and says "no" shutting off Harry's sight "for his own protection" because supposedly he isn't prepaired for that level of awesomeness or something.

Carmichael takes Harry to see "The Captain" to get things explained to him. The Captain is introduced as "Jack" and jack explains that Harry didn't move on because the other side cheated. Harry can stick around and help out with whatever the people are doing in the building they are in, or he can return back to the world and investigate his own murder. If he goes back Harry will be incorporeal, and won't be able to interact with most people, but apparently 3 people he loves are in danger and Harry can help. What 3 people? Jack won't say. Of course Harry bights and Jack offers to drop him off wherever he wants. Harry picks Mort's place. (Oh and Harry eventually figures out that Jack as in Collin J. Murphy, Karin's father, who Harry not relay any messages to her from her father since he's (Jack that is) already done enough harm to her, but he appreciates all the good Harry has done for her.)

Upon walking up to Mort's place, Harry meets "Sir Stu" an officer in colonial type garb who explains that he is Guarding Mort's home partially out of respect and partially out of having nothing better to do. Their discussion of weather or not Harry is to be permitted to bother Mort is disturbed by some kind of specter (I think the story calls it something else but I forget what) that attacks Harry. Apparently this specter is an example of ghosts that have given in to the pain and no longer remember who they were. They are preditors of memories and Harry's memories are both particularly fresh and because of his having been a wizard, particularly powerful. Harry attempts to blast the specter with his magic and to his horror absolutely nothing happens. Sir Stu tells Harry to duck and shoots the specter using his flintlock pistol loaded with a projectile that apparently was made out of one of his own memories (which he recovers from what's left of the specter afterwords).

Chapter 3 ends with even more hungry specters drifting towards Harry and Mort's place menacingly and it appears that Sir Stu is going to reluctantly attempt to get Harry permission to cross Mort's threshold.

    (Chapter 4)

Sir Stu reluctantly agrees to let Harry in, in light of the oncoming ghosty-poops. Harry heads into the house, and quickly runs into Morty. Morty is very upset that Harry is there, and refuses to work with him, despite Harry's repeated pleas. Morty didn't want to work with him when Harry was alive--why would he change his mind now? Harry continues to ask him, getting both more frustrated and more desperate. Finally Morty flees into his office and slams the door. Harry tries to follow (given that he's all incorporeal and such) but instead slams face-first into the door, much to Stu's amusement. Turns out Morty filled the door paint with ghost dust, just like what Harry uses. Whoops. Stu and Harry begin to talk again, when a ton of wind chimes start ringing. Harry asks what those mean, and Stu's response is to drawn his pistol again. More specters coming--and a LOT of them, this time.
