    People never get this.

Used as a one-off of a character expressing their disgust, these little insults are fine, if a bit immature.

Used as an ever-present replacement for the character's name, it's fucking irritating, and makes both the character saying it and the writer sound infantile.

    Isn't Gred and Forge canon?

Ahem, of course a little immaturity can be amusing, when properly employed... :awesome

I think it was used exactly once in canon, back in PoA. Rowling never used it again, because she realized it was the sort of joke that only goes downhill with each repetition.

Sadly (from the perspective of fanfiction writers), using it even once in a fanfic counts as a repetition, since it was used in canon already.

Actually, it was used in the very first scene they were in: King's Cross, back in PS/SS.

Gred and Forge is used in PS when Harry gets a jumper from Mrs. Weasley. The twins come in and say some stuff about her making sure they remember their names or something. Then one of them says that she does not need to worry they know they are called Gred and Forge

    Maybe.

Actually, you're wrong. In that scene they pretend to be each other and accuse Mrs. Weasley of not being able to tell them apart.

The scene in question is at Christmas in PS when they get jumpers from Mrs. Weasley and note that Harry doesn't have his initial on his jumper because she doesn't think she'll forget his name. "But we know our names are Gred and Forge."

Pet peeve names suck more than pet names do, especially in fanfiction.

Yep, I stand corrected - the scene was in PS, not in PoA (as nmb describes).

I think you could probably get more mileage out of "which one is Fred / George" jokes if you do it well (and do it no more than once or so). It's the Gred/Forge thing specifically that jumps the shark.

Don't be coarse, Zennith. What a man strokes it to is between himself and the party whose keylogger his computer is infected with. :p
