Old school music is just plain better

    Case in point. 1973.

This song is so fucking epic that words simply cannot describe the sheer epicness. This shit is live, and it's... Okay, the recorded song is amazing, no doubt, but this? This is something else entirely.

This was preformed a full 15 years before I was even born. Now compare this to the 'music' of today...

    Yeah...

Anyways, I feel the need to ask: why does music suck now-a-days?

Some of today's music is pretty good, and I'm sure some of the good stuff doesn't include people on drugs yodeling. Or is there something I'm missing when it comes to this song?

As for good songs back then...

I heard when you pick the best of a 30 year span, you can find better shit than the fads of a 1-2 year span.

There's plenty of good stuff back then, and more recently. I'm just glad we got out of the super hardcore gangsta rap bullshit of the late 90's. I'm not sure if the move to super poppy bugglegum everything sounding the same that was the early 00's was much better though.

I miss the late 80's early 90's New Jack Swing music, stuff that focused on the skill of the singers, instead of who had the most artificially enhanced music.

While I'm a big fan of classic rock, I find today's music to be just fine. You just have to ignore some of the glittery/glam things which are more popular on TV, and you can find some surprisingly good music, by artists who are under-exposed.

Music 'sucks' nowadays because nobody remembers the Bieber-equivalent of the 70s, but they're all-too-familiar with the latest tween sensation. Mass-marketed pop-cultural cruft is eventually forgotten and only the classics get remembered.

The year of your 'case in point', some monstrosity called 'Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ol' Oak Tree' was top of the charts, and it's sung by a dude with a mustache you could club a man to death with who sounds like he's trying desperately to be the Beatles and failing miserably.

In thirty years, people will have forgotten Bieber. I mean, hell, when was the last time you thought of Hanson or the Spice Girls?

Your asking a question there is no definitive answer to, as everyone has different opinions (key word) on what is good and what is not.

Besides, as someone before me stated, I'm quite sure that if you did enough digging, and looked past mainstream music, you'd find quite a bit that suits your tastes.

Basically, what Tehan said. In another thirty years people are bound to look after a certain number of songs from 2010 with fondness, but they won't have a fucking clue what Teenage dreams was or who sang it. And nobody in the world will give a shit that Bruno Mars is selling himself on a street corner for ends eat.

That being said, I doubt most dubstep will be looked back on in thirty years but at the moment, I'm enjoying a lot of it.

That's part of what I find messed up about the way music mostly sounds the same now. I remember stuff I heard growing up vividly, Guns and Roses, Boyz II Men, Bel Biv Devoe, Madonna, New Edition, all of the street rappers at the block parties that one day would come out as Jay z, Nas, Garth Brooks, Aerosmith, etc, etc.

My kids won't remember Spears, Bieber, Aguleria, Bruno Mars, Falloutboy, etc. Their stuff just doesn't have the weight behind it the older stuff did. I think partially it's a case of mediums. Music used to be an experience. You blasted it out in the car, or at parties, now it's something generic you listen to taped on your shoulder while your walking around, with a play list of identical sounding stuff.

Probably true, but I'd wager that a lot of people are going to remember some of the more widely accepted bands/artists like Robbie Williams, Rammstein, Metallica or Coldplay. I'm pretty sure that I will, despite my generally different taste in music.

These one-hit wonders nowadays are just that - in two decades they'll be forgotten and most people will look fondly back on the new millennium and complain about shitty modern music.

On the topic of old songs: I still occasionally like to take out and listen to my dad's old ACDC/Saxon/Pink Floyd/Dire Straits LPs.

Heck you don't even have to go that far forward. On youtube, where music sucks the year after the song people are watching was made, I've seen people say this about 2006.

What? I like this era of rap for what it is but ANY year of the 90's>>>> today

The Stones will still be performing. As will Dylan.

I like that they were blazing new ground. I don't like that every single song was ultra violent and pointless. I like the punchline type flows of people like Mase, Jada, Nas in ether, which was still violent as hell, Jayz, etc. over most of the songs of that era.

There's great music now and great music back then. The only reason people consistently undervalue modern music is that there's a lot of stigmas and social impressions about it [for instance - when I say Hanson, you say..] even if it's technically brilliant and musically wonderful. It takes a while for those barriers to go away.

    Lul?

Rammstein are a 'widely accepted' band?

No. Dylan is and should be.

I personally hate their music (although I can't deny that their live performances are something else), but they've gained a huge worldwide following and are at the moment one of Germany's most popular bands around the world. Which quite frankly baffles me to no end.
But I listed them mainly because of their particular style.
