Harry, who has been trained from the age of six to defeat Voldemort, is worried/afraid of a 5th year Ginny, and begins a "prank war" with the twins. Seriously, that's some bullshit right there.

That, and the author (authoress?) is/was a pre-Madonna.

"Oh, woe is me! People actually think my story is shit, so I'll bitch and whine about it in an author's/authoress' note!"

He isn't afraid of her (where did you get that impression?) and the "prank war" was a means of gathering allies. The author doesn't spend significant story time on it anyways, so not sure why you're so pissy about such a minor story element. Surely it'd be better to be annoyed at the crappy occlumency system he has set up?

...na, who am I kidding? You guys love trolling H/G. Like I said, it wasn't really DLP's thing, which is why it get relegated to the recycling bin. Though it's score is rather surprisingly high.

His ruthless but supportive version of Dumbledore was definitely one of the most interesting interpretations because it's one of the few stories which really acknowledges the required power differential of the league Dumbledore and Voldemort have to play in to make their position convincing.
It's a crime that he hasn't continued this yet. I hope my whining haunts you, Perspicacity;)

It does. I've got a good chunk of it written, including the main part of the climax (which I hope will be deemed pretty epic), but I keep falling into work-related black holes that prevent me from completing the draft and getting it to beta. I need a solid couple months of "in the groove" writing before I can really run it to ground.

    For those who care...
The sequel starts with a brief, near-past flashback detailing Sirius's rescue from the DOM and his recruitment into the Unspeakables as a covert, wet-ops guy. Then, after a seven month time-skip, it picks up again with a linear story. There's quite a bit more Dumbledore/Harry interaction in the sequel set against a backdrop of a multi-faceted struggle for control of magical Britain, one that is more complex than I've seen done in fanfiction.
Getting it done right in the context of a compelling story is a challenge.

Another challenge is that I think I'm quite a bit better writer now than I was then. I wonder if others run into the same sort of problem, but I find it's painful to go back and read (and cringe at) my rookie novel...

Whoa! The author came before Madonna? That's pretty nuts dude.

Also. Who the fuck says Authoress? That's just stupid.

Correct term for a female author.

    My bad. :facepalm

Yeah, I know. Felt like doing my one good deed for the day.

To be less off-topic and not make this post a waste, I'd like to say that it would be really cool to see a ruthless, "For the Greater Good" Dumbledore that continued along with his beliefs in his earlier years. Has this been done before? I know there's one fic that focuses on Harry as a child interacting with one such Dumbledore (who is the Chancellor while Grindelwald is the Emperor or something), but I can't remember the title.

May be technically correct - doesn't mean that it is actually commonly used or even that it should be. The term Author is similar to the term Actor in that both have become, in today's world, gender neutral nouns.

    @silverlasso:

That's Harry Potter and the Greater Good. Dunno if it's been abandoned or not (6 months since last update) but what's written isn't bad. Not amazing, but it sure as hell could be worse.

JBern's "The Lie I've Lived" has one of the best Dumbledore's I've ever read.

Denarian trilogy (qualogy?) FTW. Even if you know nothing about Dresden Files, read it. First story I thought of as well when thinking about a competent Dumbledore.

I have to second the mention of Perspicacity's Dagger and Rose Dumbledore. A very fascinating, highly competent Dumbledore.

I'm not sure "best" is a fitting description for JBern's characters because at least from my perspective it implies believable. Don't misunderstand me here, he is usually writing in a *very* entertaining way and one element to achieve that is that he twists characters and situations to the extreme in a pulp kinda way. To me he's the John McClane of the HP's writers.

But does he really write realistic interpretations of cannon characters? I don't think so.

    EDIT:

    /filler.

Replying to out dated posted on first page >.>

But seriously, how Perfect's Lionhearts fics are so massively huge are beyond me, cause they read very badly and the Hermione fanboyism is overbearing. Must be one of those first in best dress things. Won't even touch his Naruto fic.

They're massively huge because he writes a great story (can't think of a single negative). Simple, really.
