Seeing as we have a TV Show recommendation thread I thought I'd start one for movies.

List past epics, must sees, current recommendations etc

    My list, or collection, includes:

Austin Powers Trilogy, goldfinger kinda sucked though.
    Chopper. Best Australia movie ever.
    Con Air.
The new Batman movies, Batman Begins and Dark Knight.
Gone In Sixty Seconds. I like N.Cage, deal with it.
    Inglorious Basterds.
Pulp Fiction. Director is a genius.
Iron Man. Number 2 is a little meh though.
James Bond. I like every one from Brosman. I grew up with him as Bond so it kinda works. New ones are good although the latest was a bit meh compared to CR.
    Star Wars.
    Terminator movies.
    Boondock Saints movies. Cult hits.
    The Bourne Movies.
    The Fifth Element.
    Lord Of The Rings
True Lies. I love pointless lulzy action movies.
Oceans 11 and 13. I don't like 12, Julia Roberts shouldn't have been in any of the movies.
    Serenity.
    X-Men.

That's just a few I have in my DVD collection. I know there are massive amount of movies missing that I love that I want to start getting a hold of whilst they are still around.

Share your collections, recommendations, favorites, classics, guilty pleasures.

    Old favorites and recent purchases:

The Alien Quadrilogy (Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, Alien: Resurrection)
The Predator films (Predator, Predator 2, Predators - although, the last two are more guilty pleasures than anything)
Star Wars (Because no movie recommendation list is complete without it)
    Gladiator
Robin Hood (directed by the guy who did Gladiator, also starring Russel Crowe)
    Kingdom of Heaven
Inception (and Nolan's Batman movies as well)
How To Train Your Dragon (I admit it. I'm a sucker for this film.)
    Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Dawn of the Dead (both the 70's and 00's ones- the sequels are shite and NEVER HAPPENED.)
    Spaceballs
The Rush Hour Trilogy (Jackie Chan 8D)
    Shanghai Noon (JACKIE CHAN! 8D)
Rumble in the Bronx (JACKIE CHAN! 8D)
    Black Swan
Pirates of the Caribbean Trilogy (although the last two were a bit meh)
Reign of Fire (more dragons! 8D)
Mission Impossible I, II, and III (super guilty pleasures)
    Little Nicky (Adam Sandler 8D)
    Red
    The Jurassic Park Trilogy
    Rambo
Indiana Jones Trilogy (and that last one too, I guess...)
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
    The Sting
    The Great Escape
    The Sound of Music
    Mary Poppins

That's it for now. LotR and the like are already mentioned.

Well Murton and Lutris covered most of mine, but I'll extremely second Pulp Fiction, Inglorious Basterds, Serenity and Nolan's Batman movies. Oh, and Inception. Can't beat Inception.

My biggest rec would be Guy Ritchie's Snatch, with Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and RocknRolla following close behind. Reservoir Dogs and the Kill Bills by Tarantino as well. The Social Network, Sunshine, Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead, and a few guilty pleasures like Land of the Dead, Scott Pilgrim Vs The World and Push.

But seriously, Snatch. Fuck yeah Snatch.

EDIT: Oh, I totally forgot Lucky Number Slevin. Killer film. While I'm at it - Unusual Suspects.

EDIT EDIT: I cannot believe I forgot Moon and Fight Club. Seriously, remembering is hard and stuff.

Neither The Matrix nor V for Vendetta have shown up here yet? DLP, I am disappoint.

That said, stop at The Matrix. Most fans are hit or miss over Reloaded, and Revolutions is some what harsher to swallow.

    List additions:
    Hellboy, and 2: Golden Army.
    Indiana Jones(Raiders, Crusade) only.
    The Matrix.
    V for Vendetta.

Pandorum (Not a lot of people saw this, one of the best sci-fi movies of the last decade)
Heavy Metal (Series of interconnected shorts, some great and some not. Very strange)
Dune (Great Sci-Fi movie, not as good as the book... but when are they ever?)
Brick (Modern detective noir set in a high school, the slang, the pulp, its all there)
Event Horizon (Considered by many to be man's first encounter with The Warp)
The Brothers Bloom (Same director as Brick. Fantastic Con Movie)
The Royal Tenenbaums (Wes Anderson. Fucked up and brilliant)
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (See Above)
    The Darjeeling Limited (See Above)
The Fantastic Mr. Fox (Wes Anderson does Roald Dahl)
Running Scared (Dark, gritty, great twists and turns)
Lucky Number Slevin (Peculiar and brilliant)

Kelly's Heroes (One of my favorite War Movies)
The Dollars Trilogy (Spaghetti Westerns. Great movies all.)

    Metropolis (1927)
    Metropolis (animated)
The Ref (No trailer... wow. Denis Leary, Kevin Spacey, Fantastic)
Princess Mononoke (Miyazaki. Story, voice acting, animation, all top notch)
    Akira (On a different level)

The Secret of Nimh (One of my favorite animated movies of all time)
    Waking Ned Devine (Irish brilliance)
The Riddick Trilogy (Not for some people, I don't mind Vin Diesel so...)
A Scanner Darkly (Philip K. Dick)
Moon (Shocked this wasn't mentioned yet, also in my top 5 sci-fi movies of the last decade)

I know I'm missing a ton of great ones that have just slipped my mind.

I'll probably end up making a second post a little down the line.

    Enjoy.

    The Sting (THE con movie)

And we get this far on a movie rec list without movies like:

    -A History of Violence
    -Scanners
    -Videodrome
    -Zodiac
-Good Night And Good Luck (political movie, but easily one of the best ever made)
    -2001: A Space Odyssey
-Eyes Wide Shut (just... just see this. It's fucked up)
-The Game (the one with Michael Douglas)
    -FIGHT CLUB

So yeah... some of those films are a little more artsy, but I'd easily argue that if you can find them, see them.

EDIT: and I'm amazed after Dr. Strange Lulz posted his massive list, I thought there'd be duplicates... and yet there's not. :D

This could take a week, so I'll just mention some unmentioned must-sees

    Saving Private Ryan

    Tombstone

    The Shawshank Redemption

    (1974 version) 3 and 4 Musketeers

    Hunt for Red October

    13th Warrior

the Beast (small flick about Russian tank crew)

    Leon the Professional

    la Femme Nikita

and, I dunno, there's this bunch of movies adapted from some kids novels that's making a splash... they're pretty good. Special mention, though, for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

To Kill a Mockingbird - best movie ever made. Gregory Peck is the epitome of principled grace. I fucking *love* that movie.

Second the mention of The Iron Giant and the 1927-version of Metropolis. Metropolis doesn't logic doesn't hold up to any semblance of scrutiny, but it's beautifully made and amazing for being from so early in the history of movies.

I could leave a list of about 1000 movies here, but it'd be pointless, really. I agree with many of Dr. Strange Lulz's recs though, but Lutris? You watch a lot of crap, dude. Seriously.
