I went ahead with it and it works fine. Windows freaks out for small things like outdated programs.

So, I decided to check out IRC, but apparently I'm a complete idiot or something. Couldn't get mIRC off the website in the opening post, so I grabbed XChat-WDK.

Joined the server and registered my nickname, but when I type /j darklordpotter it just says 'no such channel'. What am I doing wrong?

 

The /join command is for channels I believe. I'm pretty new, but I also use Xchat, just use the Network list, under the xchat button, will give you an option to add a new channel. Add in all the dlp channel's stuff, then connect to that. Works for me.

 

Tried it, the DLP server didn't show up on the network list. I tried to add it, and it just reset to default every time I entered the info and clicked away. I have no idea what I'm doing.

 

Once you click on 'Network List', click 'Add'.

A new channel should appear, labelled 'New Network'. It will be selected, change the name to 'Dark Lord Potter' or whatever, that part doesn't matter. Making sure its still highlighted, click on 'Edit', and a new window will appear.

On this new window, there'll be a box with 'newserver/6667' or something similar on it. On the side of the box, there will be an option to 'add'. It should create another option also labelled 'newserver/6667' in the box. Click that then click 'edit'. Now type in the server you want to join, in this case 'irc.darklordpotter.net'.

Once that's done, you can either set it to autoconnect in that window, or just go back to the network list, select it and click connect.

 

I did that, but instead of staying 'irc.darklordpotter.net' it changes back to 'newserver/6667' as soon as I click off of it.

 

Did you click 'add' in the second window? You need to edit the second option.

 

I did. As soon as I click off of it, it resets back to default.

 

For me that only happens when I edit the first option, not the second. Try both. If they both don't work, try editing another, pre-existing channel, repeating the process in one of the many that Xchat feels free to include. Past that, sorry, I don't know.

 

No luck thanks anyway, though. I guess I'll uninstall and find mIRC somewhere.

 

Sorry man. Yeah, I also had issues with mIRC, and internet clients suck. I got pretty lucky with Xchat, I've never had a problem with it. If you really want to just chat, Mibbit usually works pretty well.

 

It's all good, I'll figure something out. Thanks for the advice.

 

Use chatzilla if you use Firefox. It's very easy to use and set up.

 

I've tried to join, but the few things I've typed just haven't shown up... (using the mibbit interface) not trying to lurk, just can't get the damn thing to work..
