So, I've been reading the fics recommended by, and watching the opinions and ideas of a fair few of the veterans of this board for some time now (I'm not going to claim to have complicated or vast knowledge, but a fair amount.. )... but one thing I've never understood is the appeal of Daphne Greengrass. Now, I'm not trying to disparage or insult the character, or HP/DG pairings.

I figured I'd flat out ask why.

I'm not really looking for in-depth character analysis, more like motivations behind the appeal. There are several pieces of fanfiction I'd like to read but a lack of understanding of the appeal of the character (and the pairing) has kept me from doing so. I just can't get my head around it.

Is it just because she's a fairly blank slate, and thus can be turned into nigh anything one wants? Is it merely a product of Internet Randomness? Is there some piece of fanfiction work that spurred this Asymmetrical Appreciation?

    Am I missing something obvious?

    So please, enlighten the ignorant?

Hey look- this is funny. At the bottom of the screen are a couple of related threads (below the label that says 'similar threads') including this one, which should satisfy your burgeoning curiosity.

(and I even made a fool of myself in it, so it's not like I'm being prideful)

Blank Slate, Slytherin Female, self-propagating fanon tropes. The Slytherin part is important because that implies some basic personality traits (even if most authors don't actually manage to portray them properly). Other than that, there's no particular reason for her to be a more popular character than Tracy Davis.

Because she's hot. At least in the good stories. Do we need another reason?

Because people run through phases, Ginny --> Hermione --> Lavender --> etc. Then people get bored with them and branch off into previously unused characters, hence the recent Sally-Anne Perks story being somewhat popular. It's not brain science, it's boredom and an attempt to conquer it.

Why create an OC as a Slytherin girl when you already have a name to use? DG is, for intents and purposes, an OC. A blank slate.

What the others, especially Knuckz, have already said.

And, fuck. I was hoping that old thread of mine would be buried and rot in Hell somewhere for all of time, away from peoples' eyes. :facepalm

I think the more important question is why not?

As others have stated, she's basically a blank slate without having to create an original name (which often sucks). She's a Slytherin, and she (was) new.

Pansy and Millicent are horribly unpleasant and basically described as ugly from canon. Tracey Davis is as much a blank slate as Daphne. That's about the extent of female Slytherins we're familiar with from canon. Tracey had a brief moment in the sun, but Daphne seems to appeal more. Personally, it's the name.

Exactly; "Tracey Davis" is just really boring. Daphne Greengrass is at least a little interesting.

Another reason to use Daphne Greengrass is that Blaise Zabini is unusable now, due to canon and stuff.

It's because of all of the Draco Malfoy fangirls. After JKR said that he married Astoria Greengrass, who was the younger sister of Daphne. I guess this makes Daphne worth using over Tracey Davis, who is half-blood in most fanfics.
So this is possibly why Daphne turns into an 'Ice Queen', is rich, and pretty because her sister married Malfoy.

Everyone from Slytherin is or has been the "ice queen" including Draco, and I'm pretty sure Harry has been the Ice Queen as well at some point. It's such an annoyingly overused cliche and I don't think it's ever been written well... ever. Well, maybe the first Pansy!Ice Queen. It's kind of like the Time turner/Magic Training Room Trunk. The first time was alright, but everyone since just screams "I have no imagination so I'm using other people's ideas!"

What I want to see is a good Vincent Crabbe!Ice Queen. That should cure people of that cliche.

Semi-On topic: How about a Fire!Queen Daphne? It's where she only acts like the Hogwarts bicycle but nobody can ever figure out who has really slept with her.

I'd read that. I would definitely read that.

    Edit:

Do want, if you can find it.

I remember reading one where she was obliviating... Draco, I think, into thinking that he'd slept with her only to get him off her back. That's the way I'd do it for Fire Queen!Daphne, obliviate everyone into think that she was a sex master/mistress?, so everyone goes around thinking she's the best, but nobody actually has any concrete details.

But why would she do this is what has me stumped. Saving her virginity for her one true love is lame. Oh! I know! Daphne is actually Draco. It's his true veela form because... uh... his father wanted a son and got a veela daughter by mistake. And you wonder why you never saw Draco and Daphne at the same time. Definitely a Harry/Daphne fic there.
