Stephen Fry's reading of the Harry Potter series was met with much praise and commercial success.

    Just sayin'.

I wouldn't mind giving this a shot if I could get access to recording equipment. I'm gone on a mock trial trip now, but I'll be back on campus Tuesday. If there's still any interest in this then and I can find the recorders I'll give it a go.

I'm new here, but I'm actually doing something like this right now. I'm not sure how this will be received, apparently in the past there was some sort of kerfuffle which made this particular fanfic particularly disliked by a not-insignificant portion of this site? I'm not privy to the details... but I'm putting forth an effort, and I'm somewhat pleased with the results. :) If anyone is interested:

I'm putting Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality into audio format on my own initiative, as a weekly podcast. Chapters 1-5 are out, and it's updated every Wednesday.

I really really don't want it. :facepalm

Imagine what it would be like to listen to a girly voice talking about HP and DM shit-banging each other.

I think I am scarred for life now. :fire

Speaking of fanfiction audio books, has anyone read the fic "Day of Reckoning: The Final Days of Jean and Logan" by ComicsNix?

ComicsNix is troll account with 34 stories spanning many fandoms, but someone made an audio version of this very...weird Xmen story and posted it on youtube.
In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if this story was in the WTF stories thread. I did see this author's Snape/Teletubbies story in there.

But the reader did a pretty good job, I think his voices for the characters went pretty well with the tone of the story; it is a crack fic after all.
I have to give this guy props for being able to read it without busting out laughing. He even kept the spelling errors in.

I'm note sure why everybody is tripping on the issue I've listen to HPMOR a few times and wish some of the epic FF was available in audio so I can listen at work.

    No.

    Everyone else. No.

Tangentially on topc: @duplaja I think was working with some tech to transcribe fics into audiobooks using Amazon something something. If they're around maybe they can help you out.

As @Zombie said, I've done some stuff with AWS Polly that worked decently well. It was pretty listenable, more than most TTS

My question is what accent you are able to use with it.

I usually use Brian (UK), since I've found it the most tolerable for long listening. I have a few fics that I've converted, that I could put somewhere as samples.

The code is pretty rough, since I never went back and cleaned it up, and the tagging party is flaky (I did some of mine manually), but this will give the gist of the idea. https://github.com/duplaja/aws-polly-long/blob/master/audiobook.py

Yes, I get the idea - how do you plan to handle the lexicon differences or custom words?

Goddamn Jeram, he's played around with it not developed a fucking standard.

I say this with humor in my tone.

I don't know how I feel about the voice. Kinda grating no matter what. Most computer generated ones are. This weird uncanny feeling.

Wait, you used to get paid for recording yourself reading fanfic? Interesting. That's gotta be pretty blurry in the legal sense. :p

I didn’t get paid. People were more than happy to just give me money in hopes that something got read. Not a lot of podfic people.

I’m sure people charge these days. There’s a patreon/PayPal for everything.
