    Another one:

Yes, it's painful when a loved one dies. For Snape, because he was indirectly the cause of it, the guilt is double-fold.

But let's face the facts. His love was obviously one-sided and unreciprocated. Yet, 17 years later, he's apparently only motivated by his love for her. If someone says it's 'romantic', they need to be slapped like the 16 year old girl they are.

People fucking move on. They fall in love with others. It's okay for Snape to feel guilty in his part that led to her death, but to never move on and try to find another girl? I've seen so many fics that rehash this unrealistic garbage, and the few that do feature another love interest for Snape are usually crappy.

    EDIT:
In the sense that Lily apparently didn't love him the way he loved her. Well, I guess she could've been sleeping with him before going into hiding, but that's usually just shippers being shippers.

Not a David Foster Wallace fan? (To be fair, his end notes, some of which span several pages, are a literary formalist's dream and actually do add to his stories in a twisted way. Fanfiction writers--or any writer not initialed DFW--can't pull it off).

The reference numbers aren't so bad in an actual, physical copy of the novel; it's easy to glance down, see the meaning of the word/concept, and then dive into the story again. FF.net, however, is far from the ideal format to do this.

    Not really hypocrisy, considering...

Besides, the key phrase is Current Pet Peeve.

I don't care how much you like something, there will be days when you hate it, whether it's a hobby, a job, or a significant other.

Even Myrtle gets some play in fanfic, whether the author turns her corporeal or not.

It burns us! It freezes! :fire

How the hell can someone have over 400 people on their friends list?

    Lack of discretion/selectivity.

It breaks the flow a hell of a lot less than a parenthetical author's note. Besides, sometimes these footnotes are things that shouldn't be described in story. For instance, an author explaining a word choice, indicating that a passage is a direct quote from the books, and other things that wouldn't make any sense being explained by a character or in the narration.

This was a big problem in the anime-fanfiction: "writers" (I use this term loosely) would liberally marble their "work" (another word used loosely) with massive quantities of (usually terrible) Japanese, with a foot-note (or worse, an end-note) with its translation.

'Information' chapters in an in-universe point of view that have little to no plot/character development.

The instances where I don't mind this usually involve a short bit of dialogue from a new or throwaway character, especially in an old or forgotten tongue.

A perfect example of this is Zenzao's "Fallen King", wherein the Old Norse or whatever is used in the first-person text, yet not explained there because Dresden himself doesn't understand it. The translation is at the end of the installment, and I like it that way. It allows me to wonder what was said while reading through it the first time, and then to get the meaning later.

I agree, however, that anything in the actual text (such as the especially infuriating fangirl "squee!" or "yum!" <- I honestly want to kill those bitches) is distracting and breaks immersion and/or flow.

Author's notes in the middle of the text, especially ones that, for example, have (AN: I've changed Lupin's werewolf transformation to be like the one in Twilight, because it's better than the Harry Potter transformation).

Makes me want to strangle them and then piss on the corpse.

Wait, do they mean what his werewolf form looks like or the ability to change form whenever? Cause if its the former, a HP werewolf almost looks identical to a regular wolf thereby making their little edit utterly pointless.

The actual transformation albeit being restricted to being under the full moon, and I assume the werewolf form thing, too.

In a story a long time ago that I cannot remember, yes; it's something that has stuck out in my memory with mid-text author notes.

I'll disagree on this point: Some fanfiction writers have pulled it off very well in the Bartimeaus Trilogy fandom, though it is a fairly rare thing. Johnathon Stroud, the author of the series, also used it to great effect.

On topic: The vast lack of trickster!Harry, theif!Harry, and Lovecraftian-esque stories. Seriously, Lovecraftian stuff should have been cliche by now.

In theory? A mischievous interpretation of Harry.

In practice? A massive, steaming pile of shit with a swarm of cardboard cutout 'witty dialogue' circling that will make you immediately x out as soon as he opens his mouth.

    Do not want.

Animagi I can easily stomach, but only if it's done in a realistic manner (such as in The_Santi's story) and not the 'one potion/one meditation session that makes you an animagus and gives you an uber!dick/pussy!' route.

Man, I love the potions that give you an uber!dick. They're better than those pills I get from Joe Bob's email offers!

Uhh, this is fanfiction pet peeves. That aspect of canon is stupid, but sadly not imagined by the fandom.
