I was going to say we have another Redditor, but then I noticed you were just a body builder.

This. Fucks sake, didn't even see the division sign at first couple of reads. Was really confused wtf everyone was doing. I use / even in my notes these days <_<

This. Because I found it interesting that members of my favorite forum were discussing elementary math :)

You know, not being English, I never had PEMDAS, and neither any other mnemonic for that matter. And to be honest, that is a completely horrible way to remember the order of operations too; because it looks like Multiplication > Division (and Addition > Subtraction), when both respective operators have the same weight.

Evidence: A 80+ page thread, whose content makes a fourth grader cry. Whoever came up with that retarded mnemonic idea should be shot, because obviously, it made 50% of all English people fail at basic maths :s

Lil' Pers was taught: "P E M A" and has never had a problem with operation order. He learned early on to think of subtraction and addition as the same thing; similarly for multiplication and division. (It's best to teach kids about negative numbers before you teach them subtraction; teach them about fractions and reciprocals before you teach them division).

While you're at it, I think you should teach them Venn Diagrams before they learn about LCM and GCD. It makes it way easier to understand.

I should write a book about this stuff.

    What's your reasoning there?

I was taught it that way.

This pretty much. Been studying mechanical engineering for the last 6 years, can't remember the last time I actually used division or subtraction, instead of multiplying fractions or adding negatives. And if it really becomes an issue, add brackets until your face bleeds.

Is it just me or are these types of maths problems showing up all over the place right now.

This is the fourth time in a week I've seen a discussion like this but this is the only one that has not descended into a shitstorm (lol'd at Pers bitch slapping the problem immediately)

I wasn't taught venn diagrams until after mensuration and most of the basic plane geometry and trigonometry. Venn diagrams were just a small section in a chapter on set theory sometime in 9th grade, iirc.

On topic, BDMAS is what I use, if I can't be bothered with replacing all the divisions by equivalent multiplications. Works well enough in this case.

    This.

I'd like to believe it's because we have a bit more intelligence to go around than that forum or /b/, which is where such threads crop up occasionally.

€dit: Or, as Rehio pointed out, the population in general.

Saw this same thing being spread around Facebook or somethin'.

1.7 million people on one side.
    1.3 million on the other.

  13. 48/2(9+3) = 2
    48/2(12) = 2
    48/24 = 2
    2 = 2

    48 ÷ 2 * 12 ≠ 24 * 12
    48 ÷ 2 * 12 = 24 * (1/12)

    Any Questions?

You know. How about instead of doing intros, new guys from now on are required to solve that equation. If the answer is two, they get banned.

Now, if you please ... :)

This is on FB too (different numbers, same problem). Over 800 comments on the status. On 'Osama is dead!': 21 comments. On 'Has a new job!': 4 comments. Ah, Facebook.

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110427155042AACb7d8 is an answer which explains it, by a college math professor with Doctorate in maths and everything. I'm gonna take his word. 288. (Or 9, with the numbers he's using. Same dif.)

I've never been taught anything about Venn Diagrams in school. I didn't even know they were called Venn diagrams til I did a google search for something like "funny circle graphs" looking for an amusing picture I had lost a couple of years ago.

I don't recall learning acronyms for anything except for FOIL. FOIL is "First, Inner, Outer, Last" when multiplying polynomials. I can no longer recall when or how I learned the proper order to do multiplication and whatnot in.

That said I did get 288 when I worked the problem without reading the thread, using more or less the same method that Pers explained in an early post.

Did everyone but me cover Venn Diagrams at some point in their Math education?

Edit: I should also comment that in the post I quoted, I read "Mensuration" as "Menstruation" and just assumed that since this was DLP that someone was using that as a means of saying "I didn't learn it until later than everyone else."

I don't remember when I learned about measuring things. In fact, I remember very little of my math education in any kind of order, except for vague recollections of what we did in some grades.

    288. BODMAS has just bought back a flood of repressed maths memories from school. Weird!
