They say the PSN will be back up within a week so regular online play will be back up soon.

Sony did say that, but things have changed. The attack was worse than they'd thought and there's extensive QA testing to take into account. There's no ETA anymore for PSN.

    ... :(

I've been waiting to get Mortal Kombat and play it online, but I guess that'll have to wait. Fucking hell Sony, get it the fuck together.

To be fair, when Sony describes PSN as being "incredibly complex", I don't think they're exaggerating. It's probably a very sophisticated global network. I had a quick google for info on PSN's network architecture, but couldn't find any maps or interesting info except that it was reported in 2007 that PSN had contracted Limelight as their CDN.

The rumours for blame are flying thick and fast: Anonymous, organised crime, inside job, unpatched Apache servers without firewalls, et al. It's all speculation.

I wouldn't be too surprised if Anonymous hacked Sony just to settle the old "X-Box vs. PS" debate....

The correct answer would be SNES.

Jesus Christ, giving my money to Microsoft doesn't seem like such a bad idea now...

    True.

I only recently bought my PS3 in March, hadn't owned a console since the original Playstation.

Maybe I should have went ahead and got the X-Box 360 instead. I decided on Playstation largely as it meant I didn't need to get a Blu-Ray player as well. That and I'd never messed with Xbox before so was more familiar with Playstation.

Oh well. If I get an Xbox it'll probably start having problems soon too.

    Annoying.

Especially as I used it to watch a lot of Hulu+ and Netflix.

New update. Sony's plan is that PSN will be back up and running by May 31 at the latest. Some partial network functionality might be enabled earlier. There's no telling whether the ability to login and play games will be part of any partial re-activation of the network.

The PSN May Not Be 100% Back Until May 31 [Kotaku]

I haven't heard any word about when SOE might be coming back. Sorry, all of you MMO players. Maybe give Rift a try while you're waiting?

New new update. Forget about PSN being up by May 31. Despite that info coming from Sony spokesperson Shigenori Yoshida yesterday, today Sony are denying it. There's no ETA.

Thanks for the updates, yak. I suppose I should be thankful for these delays... they may help, just slightly, to keep my mind on revision rather than gaming...

It's still down for me, but I don't think it will be too much longer. I hope. :(

If I'm reading the map correctly, it looks like they went from the coasts inwards towards the midwest. North and South Dakota got it, looks like Minnesota will be soon.

The blog hasn't updated to it yet (unless it did so within the last five minutes), but PSN is now up in Minnesota, yeah.

If it weren't for exams, I'd be crawling all over CoD right now and might well have ordered LA Noire and Portal 2. As it is... pain and suffering.

Is the service running at full power once again, or is it still limited?

Jimmy, what's your handle? Mine's All-Powerful-Oz (but I'm using Fagginz until my password resets).

Unsurprisingly, mine is JimmyCranberry (or is it uncapitalised... doesn't make much of a difference).

Are there ever any organised DLP matches or anything?

EDIT: And I probably would have got round to playing on my PS3 if other distractions stopped cropping up.

Nope. I'll occasionally rape Zeph on PS3 and a while back did most of the spec ops on PC with Pai, but that's about it. D:
