Supernatural's hella hard to find non-Wincest for, not even going into the amount of slash that's been spawned. But I've got a handful of gen fic recs. And a ton of crossover recs for random crime dramas. Most of these authors write exclusively gen/het, and you can check out their other work and their favorites list for Mostly Safe recs.

Banner: I didn't find anything like what you wanted - Sam that didn't go to Stanford? But I distinctly remember some time travel/alternate dimension fic along those lines somewhere. It's driving me insane.

Anything by Kroka-Refur is good: most of their stuff is on livejournal but they have an FFN account with a handful of fics up.

Their fic The Crow on the Cradle was the first that I read, summarized thusly: AU. On October 2, 2005, Sam Winchester walked out of the apartment he shared with his girlfriend Jess in the middle of the night, and didn't come back. COMPLETE.

In short, Sam leaves, Jess lives, and Dean and Jess team up to find Sam. Epic season 1 AU.

Blind Faith by Adrenalineshots on Archive of Our Own is one of the few disability fics I can stand - a mild AU casefic that (at the time) I could see easily fitting into spn canon.
Summary: With the end of days looming, the oldest secret of ancient times is about to resurface. A call for help from Castiel lures the Winchesters and Bobby to Egypt, where a new facet of Lucifer's plan stirs. Hindered by their unorthodox traveling arrangements, Dean will struggle against a new definition of himself and the one thing that has become the Winchesters greatest fear: old prophesies.

Silver Ruffian is a highly mediocre author and usually goes completely AU (almost like their canon ended with No Rest For the Wicked), but I remember liking Dog Eat Dog when it was in progress.

Writing on the Wall, by Mousme, was the zombie fic I didn't know I wanted. Mousme has a gift for creating a good, bleak, graveyard atmosphere in their fics.
Summary: Caught in the wake of a nation-wide epidemic, Sam and Dean find themselves stranded in a small town. Together with a couple of other survivors, they must run the gauntlet of a town full of the infected. And nowhere is truly safe...

Laura of Maychoria writes light, funny one-shots. She's got a thing for hurt/comfort, humor, and banter (which should be it's own genre). I've got a few crossover recs for her, but the first story I've got that isn't a crossover is Stupid People. The author describes it as crack, but I think it's more borderline crack.
Summary: Some people are cat people. Some people are dog people. And then there are people like Dean... Unrepentant crack. Castiel is there, too.

Crossovers:

Take a Long Line, by Derry (Numb3rs/Supernatural), is what I would consider a classic. Part of the reason I started reading Supernatural fics at all was because of this fic: I adore the clashes between local law enforcement and the supernatural in any context, and the Supernatural fandom was made to deliver this.
Summary: Winchester isn't stupid. Dangerous, unpredictable and often reckless. But definitely not stupid. So there has to be a good reason that, knowing full well that he's on the FBI's radar, Dean Winchester brazenly walked into a Federal Building.

Younger Son, by Laura of Maychoria (Stargate: Atlantis/Supernatural), is a one-shot Monster in the Closet fic. You don't really need to know anything about either fandom to read.
Summary: McKay told him not to go in that room, but John Sheppard is at least half cat, with the same curiosity problem. Meanwhile, there's something in Sammy Winchester's closet.

Sam, Son of Adam and sequel Kings for a Little Time are crossovers with the Chronicles of Narnia, also by Laura of Maychoria. It's a short story about how Sam gets Dean back from Hell in a completely different way than canon.
Summary: "I don't…I'm not…no throne, no," Sam protested. His voice sounded utterly weak to his own ears, though, and so very easy to ignore. "I just want my brother."

Summary: This is the great secret of Spock's birth: Human and Vulcans are not compatible. There has never been another like him nor will there ever be another like him. It is for all intents and purposes... a miracle.

Burnt Ash and Golden Eyes, also by Insane Troll Logic, is a one shot Psych crossover that doesn't have as much to do with the Winchesters as it could have had. A little bit AU for Psych, because Shawn Spencer's mother finally appeared in one of the later seasons.
Summary: When Shawn Spencer is six months old, his mother spontaneously combusts over his cradle.

Wolverines, Wendigos, and Winchesters by SciFiNutTX (X-Men movieverse/Supernatural) is a decent fic for the first thirty chapters or so. Then it turns into a soap opera of epic proportions. It's on chapter 91 right now, if that tells you anything, but I figured it was still worth a mention.
Summary: Dean meets Logan while hunting a wendigo. An unexpected friendship and job offer results, which leads to more changes in Dean's life than he thought possible. Very Dean-centric and beginning with chapter 7, very AU in both SPN and XMen. Note: for XMen, I've mixed the histories from the films, comics and cartoons, as well as creating some new events with a SPN spin to them. (WIP - posting regularly)

Bouncing Around by PurpleMoon3 is another Psych crossover. It is more than slightly retarded. It's a series of loosely connected one shots crossing a few universes, mostly Psych and Supernatural, and it's occasionally hilarious.

Summary: Crossover with NCIS. People who work in Abby's lab are never what they seem. And Sam is no exception.

Smoke on the Water by Mousme is a Burn Notice casefic. I loathe Burn Notice - mostly because of the actors - but I enjoyed Michael's Westen's narrative.
Summary: Casefic. Former spy Michael Westen has enough problems of his own —not least of which is figuring out who burned him and why— without his mother accepting jobs on his behalf as well. But when he starts investigating the unsolved deaths of young people in Miami, he finds himself crossing paths with an unlikely pair of brothers. In Michael's line of work, suspicion is par for the course.

The Ghost in the Lab by Like-A-Raven-14 is a Bones crossover. The case is okay, but the most interesting thing about the fic (to me) is how the Bones crew responds to Sam and Dean's interference in the lab after they're gone.
Summary: The team at the Jeffersonian Medico-Legal Lab uses human remains to solve crimes. This process is made slightly more complicated when one of the humans in question is still attached to the remains. Complete.

Collisions by Icarus is a crossover with Stargate: Atlantis where Dean and John Sheppard piss each other off in a drag race, and then John vanishes from the car.
Summary: The engine gunned and they caught up, moving alongside the red car long enough for Sam to catch a glimpse of a guy in a bomber jacket and Aviator glasses, his generous mouth in a hard line – until the guy smirked, and cut Dean off at the next turn.

Volatile Compounds by gekizetsu is another NCIS casefic, and it's probably the best of the bunch, along with its sequel, Retrieval.
Summary: The Winchester boys are used to just cranking out fake IDs and getting access to anything they need when they're hunting something. They've rarely come across anybody in law enforcement who's truly competent. It really, really sucks when they do.

This Bitter Earth is one of seven casefics by artsavage, only this one is a crossover with Criminal Minds.
Summary: The Winchesters and the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit investigate the same case, a series of mysterious deaths on the grounds of a South Carolina plantation. Set late in the 4th season for both shows.

Crossed Paths by LovinJackson is what is colloquially known as a Weechester fic, and a crossover with the Lethal Weapon franchise. Sam and Dean are kids, and Dean's been captured by a monster.
Summary: Captured and tortured by a supernatural foe who is out to get his brother, Dean receives the help from an unexpected source. Pre-series.

The Informant verse is a collection of oneshots and short stories crossing Criminal Minds and Supernatural (What if Spencer Reid was a good friend of the Winchesters? He's an informant to Bobby and the boys...), later incorporating The Reference, crossing into Psych and Stargate (Shawn Spencer has had 57 jobs after he left high school, on-record. His unpaid work with the Winchesters was counted as his 58th. But even they don't really know why Shawn has contacts with the Pentagon, or why Shawn can call the President by his first name so casually... ). WIP project.

lembas7 exists in WIP limbo, but she finished off two of her three Stargate/Supernatural crossovers before leaving off in 2007. Signs and Warnings is the first in the series (Sam and Dean have a hunt in the SGC), followed by the incomplete Rearview (Sam and Dean briefly return to the SGC as... consultants), and finally followed by the completed Down From the Gallows, where Victor Henriksen catches up with the Winchesters, and the military interferes.
Best summary: Evil comes in many forms. And it doesn't need to be believed in to exist.

And finally, Those Campbell Boys by l. marie benjamin, a WIP crossover with Criminal Minds. This takes off from the season 5 finale of Supernatural spectacularly, delving into an alternate Campbell family history and screws with everything you thought you knew about the Supernatural world. I love it. A lot. The Criminal Minds crossover is in the form of Spencer Reid being the Winchester's maternal cousin, who hasn't spoken to his extended family in years when a demon attacks one of his team members.
Summary: When a demon attacks one of the team members, an impossible world opens up for another and a mother's secrets will change everything.

Some HP/SPN crossovers that I enjoy (Specificity Ezekiel with super!bad-ass!harry, but many won't like it because there is stage prepared for slash Dean/Harry, but until then I will enjoy it).

Wayward sons is slash, I'm pretty sure.

 

Femme!slash works (or not-works) for me the way homme!slash doesn't work for the men here at DLP. The big difference is, I don't find it *offensive,* per se - just not erotic. When it's a big part of the story, skimming the stuff will pretty much ruin the tale, even one that's well-characterized, tightly plotted, and full of twists. Femme!slash that happens offscreen, or the occasional kiss and cuddle won't kill a story for me.

So. I made a real effort to only link the utterly non-slash stories above. Even the one that I warned for slash, "Parts of Me Still Unbroken," isn't graphic. I think that DLP would appreciate the wonderful writing, and the story aspect that I won't spoil.

There are some damn good stories that I would rec in a heartbeat, but they are slashy. I don't want to be banned again.

It's my hand and it's the symbol of the Cat Empire (an Australian, Melbourne based Ska band). They are incredibly awesome and it's become a tradition for me and my general circle of friends to draw cat whiskers on our faces and the symbol on our hands so when we're at the front we can show them we appreciate their awesome-nosity-ness-ability-ism.

This actually made me rofl. It's not even specifically stated on the show but it was still voted the favourite TV Romance over a Gossip Girl pairing.

I'm just gonna go ahead and say this... if Supernatural was owned by HBO then that^ would be the big thing of the 7th season (which has been confirmed btw). Luckily, it's the CW so the chances of that happening are pretty minimal.

So the season 6 finale of Supernatural is one nice big two hour episode! Let It Bleed/The Man Who Knew Too Much is looking to be pretty freaking beautiful.

In the first hour (ie. Let It Bleed) Ben and Lisa are back but I'd bet my ass that this will be the last time we see them as Ben and Lisa are abducted and used as leverage against Dean. Lisa is possessed and Ben and Dean team up against her. Btw, does anyone know roughly how old Ben would be now? He's about 15 I think, or 14.

I also found a sneak peak of the second half but it looks like a bit of a let down, amnesia is almost a cliche but if any show can pull it off it's Supernatural.

I think in terms of the people who will be killed/transformed or whatever there are several routes that I could see them taking or any combination thereof.

4) Bobby dies

Supernatural season 6 finale is looking pretty freaking beautiful. I reckon Castiel might fall, Kripke said there was going to be a "transformation and a character death"... probably a real one this time. I'd be tempted to say that Castiel is going to die and his possible resurrection would be the cliffhanger and hook of season 6 and 7 respectively but they've already done that before and with Sera Gamble in charge instead of Eric I think the it would follow with the change in style.

Yeah, my money is on Lisa dying and Castiel falling, I don't think they'll make Sam a demon though... although in one of the episode commentaries Sera Gamble said that she liked Sam best when he was evil (her favourite episode was when Sam was possessed in season 2 (or was it 3?)

Given Seras penchant for Sam being evil and the continuous not even remotely subtle nods they've given over the past several season to Sam becoming something other than human I think him becoming a demon is a good possibility.

True. That woman seems to enjoy evil Sam way too much. I'm hoping for Lisa getting killed so we can get the little brat as a hunter-protege (though he pisses me off with his soft voice) under Bobby.
