My daughter, who just turned 12, shows a sophistication to her sarcasm that, frankly, scares the fucking hell out of me. I'm a fairly sarcastic person, but there's no way in hell she got to where she is by picking it up from me. The fact that a lot of the kids at her school seem to share in this is even weirder.

Overall, her 6th grade class seems to act more like my my friends and I did when we were freshman and sophmores. I guess kids do grow up to quick these days, which is unfortunate.

I freaking hate it when authors decide that if a character walks into gringotts and is slightly nice to a goblin, the entire goblin race will bow down and love said character.

Let's be honest, the goblins would probably just be like 'Oh safe, that guy was slightly respectful. Who really gives a shit though'.

Heh, one fic' I read had Griphook getting excited because Harry apparently remembered him/his name.

Harry then said, "Nope, it's on your name tag. Vaults, please." :awesome

That, is freaking AWESOME. I must find this author and congratulate him/her.

    Passed vs. Past

I simply can not abide a story where "Harry walked passed X to get to Y." Any misuse of those words will make me stop reading immediately.

There's already a topic for spelling errors

Speaking of peeves, I really hate it when authors change the universe in a way that it doesn't feel like HP anymore. Fine example of that is introducing a new (usually "dark") branch of magic that invalidates everything we've learned from canon. They usually go along with worldwide conspiracies and infallible disguises.

That's true, but I put 'past vs. passed' because I find it much more irritating than the other spelling errors. Most errors I can simply ignore; not so for this one. It just doesn't sit well with me.

To be fair, that thread hasn't been touched in over a year, and was quite beautifully cap-stoned by Warlocke's notion of Molly Weasley's privates becoming an event horizon where all the Potter-verse characters were being absorbed by marriage or attrition.

    (Sigh) Good times.

I'll have you no that their are more afoul errors then you're "passed vs. past". My "favorite" is defiantly "should of/have" because it doesn't make any since.

I make that mistake all the time, shamefully. Fortunately, my word processing program auto-corrects. :)

While talking about mixing up words, really?

Though I do actually agree with you.

I don't think its reasonable to expect the same quality of work from a fanfic as you would from a novel, so stopping reading as soon as you find a single error is a bit silly. These aren't professional works, they things people have written in their spare time for a bit of fun. I don't want to read something with loads of mistakes, but the odd typo or misspelling is not a problem.

My number one Pet peeve has got to be the Jeconais style romance where everything is sunshine and butterflies with no one ever hiding secrets.

I want teenagers who don't say whatever is on their mind the instant someone asks, that make mistakes and are occasionally selfish here and there.

This. The closer to morning it is when I'm typing or looking over something, the more misspellings and grammar issues happen. Rather than just closing you could always leave a review pointing out the error. I know some people don't change it, but I do. The people I've pointed out errors to fix them as well.

Back to pet peeves: Wh3n stor13s do l33t speak for no reason. Pretty close to text speak though, and both are annoying.

    I try to.

Then again, I see fan fiction as preparation for the 'real thing', so maybe it's just me?

Another one, when people are being really irritating and smothering, and Harry decides that he doesn't really mind, when in reality, he would, like every teen, bitch slap them.

Ah yes, the good old days. When I could just walk up to my parents and teachers and slap them in the face.

    :facepalm
