Really? I don't like such inside jokes not for the benefit of the character but for the reader playing with an assumed cliche.

 

The joke doesn't necessarily rely on knowledge of the cliche. It could work in another situation with any other low-level worker, it just wouldn't have as much impact.

 

Probably already been mentioned, but people holding stories for ransom? Possibly the worst. Although most of the time, the kind of people that do this write dreadful stories anyway...

Well, if someone was being really irritating and smothering that isn't my parent, and is more a friend, I tend to slap them, and tell them to stop being annoying.

On topic. Was trying to get back in to Prince of a Dark Kingdom and realized that there were way too many words and introductions of characters for me to get into. I think thanks to it I have developed another pet peeve, or least elevated a past annoyance.
