Wasn't the MoR thread closed due to massive dead horse abuse ?

Yes, which is why I'm reluctant to continue the conversation. We're simply not going to agree.

And to contribute to the thread...

I know it's in the recycling bin, but it's doubled in length since then (not to mention the score is above a 3.5 right now). I'm know there are rules against re-reccing fics, but I don't know how changing scores work once it's already been sorted..

Anyways, the concept is incredibly unique, the execution is effective, the H/G is not the shitty Mary-sue fest that it usually turns into, and the main complaint in the original thread about lack of plot has been somewhat resolved (though it's been traded for a Manipulative!Dumbledore, which is irritating).

Oh, yeah. I can't really say what it's about as it ruins the story; reading the first chapter should make it pretty clear.

The latest chapter of General had me going... are you serious? WHAT THE FUCK? Oh my god.

It was an amazing chapter, very unique. This Dumbledore is not canon Dumbledore, this chapter made it very clear. Dumbledore, here, is like a darker version of himself. Brilliant but scary as fuck.

He is a BAMF with his plans. What he managed to get Harry to do and agree with by the end of the chapter... Holy shit.

This is a Dumbledore that you would not want to see as a Dark Lord. He would pwn the world in just a few days.

Shit, Dumbledore telling Harry to make a bloody horcrux and use the dark arts is something I have never seen. It's awesomeee, and horrifying.

    I want moar.

4/5 with potential to go up. I feel like there needed to be more reaction from Harry as he learned everything.

I agree that the chapter was quite good, and this Dumbledore is what canon Dumbledore *could* and *should* have been. My only problem was
that it was transparently telegraphed that Harry would kill Grindelwald.

    Hiatus? Goddammit.

Yeah, it was a bit obvious, but I liked how Dumbledore manipulated the events to keep both parties unknowing until it happened.

Another start to the old Indy!Harry cliche, with a couple new ideas. Also done by belleradh, a fantastically talented writer with a fantastically shitty muse. Abandoned, unfortunately, but still worth reading.

I remember when she was the darling author of DLP. Then she just disappeared (I think she got tired of HP).

In the last three months she's written something like 130k words for various Ranma, Negima! and Sailor Moon fics. I don't really have any hope of her finishing any of her old fics, or even going back to HP.

I think at one point she had a note posted on her ff.net profile basically saying "I'm done with HP, I write for myself, fuck everyone else, I'm now going to go write for [insert extremely obscure fandom here]". So yeah.

By the same girl who wrote Sanitarium, which while I couldn't quite finish, admired for its darkness. Not sure this is quite library-worthy but there's nothing really wrong with it, and it's pretty funny.

Instant credit to the author for this.

The story itself is reasonable, with an interesting style of writing, but it's nothing truly spectacular. I'd give it a 3, and say it fits in this topic pretty neatly.

Yeah I'm gonna disagree. I didn't think this was very good at all. Any story, even a one-shot, is going to be mediocre at best if it's sole purpose is to flip a cliche on it's head. And that's all this tries to do and really all it can do. It's not funny and only serves as a rather lame parody of terrible writers, which quite frankly is neither interesting nor difficult.

I'd give it a 2/5 at best. So you poked fun at a usually poorly executed cliche everyone with two brain cells knows is almost always terrible. Bully for you.

By the person who's written millions of words of nearly-identical H/D slash comes a half-decent gen fic. I don't particularly like the author's writing style, and there are a few weird things at the end of chapter 5, like why they didn't think of polyjuice or memory charms. Also, the H/D interaction bugs me a bit:
So as opposed to not being gay, this is the first reason why he won't start a relationship with Draco? :facepalm

Anyways, probably a 3/5. Harry's characterization is good, and Snape's is decent, though everybody else's are iffy.

And, hilariously enough, this seems to be one of the author's more popular fics, despite (because?) the fact that it's gen.

Yeah, I started reading this earlier. You and I had the same reaction to Harry's thoughts on a relationship with Malfoy, funnily enough.

That said, I wouldn't rate this a 3/5. While Snape's characterization is done pretty well, I have to disagree about Harry's. He isn't Harry, really. He's Snape mk. II, minus all the grease and rants about James Potter. Just my read on it.

Well, I agree that he doesn't act like Harry did in canon - he's paranoid and suspicious. But I think that's a natural reaction to being pulled out of your own universe and told, oh, well, you've got to do it again, except our bad guy is stronger, smarter, and makes less mistakes. And no, we obviously don't think of you as a person, just a tool. I don't buy into the theory that the Sorting Hat considered Harry for Slytherin because of the Horcrux, I don't think JKR even had the idea developed when she was writing book 1. He has to have some Slytherin instincts and they seem to be serving him well. Though, admittedly, he's not tripping up enough for it to seem realistic.

Still, it's a valid point, though I don't think I'd enjoy reading about a Gryffindor!Harry in this context. It'd be a lot more angst filled.

Hm, just finished reading it--there are a few things that bother me: the Draco/ Harry interaction is really annoying. It feels like the author is just going through the motions of Harry being 'disgusted,' when in fact he's already entirely too sympathetic to Malfoy. It's just weird.

But the funny thing is, although the AU Harry who died reads like everything you would hate in a slytherin-sympathetic story, the protagonist we're given here is just enough of a dick that I actually like him. He's purposefully rude, he doesn't pretend to like anyone, he's suspicious and intentionally crass at times, and the contrast between him and the dead Harry is kind of refreshing.

Although the pace is kind of glacially slow so far, the story does a good job of exploring the differences between the two universes without being overly angsty or dramatic.

I think, given the premise, the author does a pretty good job of not going overboard in a lot of ways. Iunno, it kept me interested, and I'll likely keep reading. I'd probably give it a 3 or 3.5/ 5.

    What the fuck guys?

How the hell did you miss the glaring plothole in the fic?

Due to the prophecy Harry should be shielded as well. He can only be killed by Voldemort. Atmost he can suicide. How the fuck did the author miss this when she started writing about murder? Harry looks pretty dumb for investigating his own murder which should not be possible in the first place.
