    I can't stand this fic. Dumbledore is patting Harry on the head calling him what a good boy he is like a fucking dog.
    I just can't get past the ridiculous overblown abused-Harry.

    I just gave the "A Patrol Changes Everything" fic a try. The abuse is way overdone compared to canon, but that seems par for the course for that kind of fic. It also seems to go out of its way to, I dunno, bond the characters? First chapter Pomphrey apparently can't fix Harry's broken ribs without him being wide awake for the very painful process, so naturally Albus has to hold him down and whisper words of comfort, etc. Many of them are just overly clingy/comforting/angsty or something -- Everyone else is just, so, bitchy? I dunno. Lots of other irritating story qualities also.

    Not even close to library worthy but I guess you didn't post it there so that's sort of moot. I am going to keep reading though just because Mentor!Dumbledore fics are so rare but I doubt I'll make it much further (currently almost to Chapter 3).

    Edit: Yeah, I made it to Chapter 5 but this is pretty bad. Can't take no more!

    Yeah I gave it a try and didn't get very far. I think I'd have been able to read it, but Dumbledore's not even characterized properly. If he'd reacted like I imagined canon!Dumbledore to react to this sort of thing, maybe I'd have been able to stomach it, but as it was he just sounded like a fretting old grandma.

    Sorry about that then, but it does get a lot worse before it gets near better. I suppose I'm also hoping for a Harry that will eventually be less passive, but it doesn't seem to be going that way. Or if it is, its getting there rather slowly, as it still seems to be in the first week a second year. I tend to skip the around most of the stuff that happens before second year in this story, which is about where it was when I picked it up. At the time, I was hoping for a rather big change when school resumed.

    Anyway, I suppose it stood out to me in the field of evil!Dumbledore and manipulative versions that seem quite prevalent right now. But yeah, the amount of abuse drags on more than needed.

    No worries -- it's a valid link for this thread and it's not like you put it up for review. It would have had a lot of potential if they had just dialed everything down a bit perhaps. I'd have liked to have seen canon!Harry get beat up by a Death Eater's kid in first year and found by the Headmaster and go from there with few other aspects of this story included, but the Harry in this fic is so removed from canon that it's ridiculous.

    I remember one of the first fics I ever read was Chaos Theory (thanks to PatronusCharm) and it got updated recently, but I went back and reread it and realized how crappy it was... riddled with errors, stilted dialogue, and stumbling prose. Eugh. Not to mention chapter 3 bungles the whole Dumbledore raising Harry thing by completely skipping over it.

    Ok, I'll admit it -- I haven't had time to read this yet. I was just looking through the "Almost Recommended" thread last night and saw that this story (1) seemed reasonably popular all things considered and (2) has a Mentor!Dumbledore. The description and comments imply that Dumbledore has a fair sized role. It's next on my reading list, but I wanted to stick it in here before I forgot.

    That story isn't exactly Mentor!Dumbledore, yet. And it's on hiatus for the time being. It is a story to keep an eye on though. The last chapter sets up a great premise and its Dumbledore is very promising at the very least.

    Yeah, The General definitely has potential, and the last two chapters show a decidedly ruthless and (it seems to me) still-ambitious Dumbledore that I really want to read about. Sucks that it's on hiatus. /sadface

    It hasn't been mentioned and will likely be old news to most DLPers, but enembee's By the Diving Light and its sequel, Conlaod's Song, feature an AU with a superb Dumbledore in a mentor role.
