Would Harry really have advanced himself to the position of Headmaster in ten years, though?
It would really be more interesting to have him as DADA teacher.

I gotta agree here--unless you want Harry more in a more distant role, a professor is going to give you many more excuses for interaction.

I'm going to express general agreement, and even though DADA-Professor!Harry is incredibly cliche, it still makes more sense than Headmaster!Harry at that age.

Defence Professor!Harry is so cliche though, perhaps you can make him the instructor for another subject he excelled at? e.g. Charms, Transfigurations.

We don't really know that he excelled in either of those, those I can see charms simply due to the similarities in spell-casting with Defense.

Harry can excel at whatever the author wants him to excel at -- maybe canon!Harry could only feasibly teach DADA, but if the author intends for Harry to not suck as much as he did in canon then he could be Headmaster (I'm sure Dumbledore was qualified in his 30s) or teach something else. It's a weird thing to keep discussing when we don't know enough about how the author intends to write Harry to say what he might or might not be able to do, unless he said it already and I missed it. I assume it isn't following canon exactly because Harry is going to be at Hogwarts instead of an Auror (unless Harry is old enough to have retired from the Aurors).

tl;dr -- I'm gonna wait and see what he writes before I nitpick too much.

He earned E's on both subjects, at least. If the author wanted s/he can say Harry earned a better grade on his NEWT or get a Mastery later on.

By the way, since someone suggested Alexandria Quick, why not Hogwarts House Divided from the same author? It's a decent mix of OCs and Canon characters.

I'm actually still working on the first chapter, I've been too busy to really dedicate much time to it lately.
About the Headmaster Harry concern - Harry would be about 46 in my fic, as it's set 10 years after the epilogue. With his fame and accomplishments, I can imagine him receiving the Headmaster position at that age.
I was actually intending to make Hermione the Charms professor though.

Oh, we thought you meant 10 years after DH w/o epilogue. I suppose that's more acceptable, as by the time he's 46 anybody at Hogwarts who has the inclination to assume the position is probably dead or retired.

I still think that is a little young. Of course that could be used as a source of tension, with some staff members resentful, suspecting that Harry got special treatment due to his status as a hero.

One clarification. I suggest the OC check for another forum. I do think you could use it, having a clearer picture of who your character might be would be good for you.

I never get why other people would be resentful of him because of that, unless they wanted the position, but wouildn't they be just as grateful to him as they were in the war, too. Although, if you did it, Harry-Neville tension would be unique as most fics I read have Neville as basically as Harry's laptop who loves him for giving him a little bit of a attention...

Post-Epilogue? I probably won't be reading this then, sorry. =)

Well, I might if they made it an Antithesis type of post epilogue...

Bloody hell, does anyone else find it ridiculous to be arguing about whether or not Harry is too young to be Headmaster at 46 years old in a fic that we don't even have a prologue for yet? We don't know enough about this particular Harry or his past to speculate on whether or not he's effin' qualified. /end rant

Why am I bitchy this morning anyway? Eesh. Anyway, for this unexplainable reason this thread made me think of the movie Goodbye, Mr. Chips. Damned good show, almost stole the Oscar from Gone with the Wind if I recall correctly. Haven't seen it in ages but damned if I don't want to go hunt it up somewhere and watch it again... not that I'd know where to find it.

Alternatively, does anyone know of a decent professor!Harry or Headmaster!Harry? I admit that it interests me, and probably others too.

OP, your idea sounds interesting, but it would have be very skillfully done to avoid being cliche or just plain bad.

I like teacher!Harry, so I've read quite a lot of them.Sadly enough, in most teacher fics he's instantly the greatest and most popular teacher ever, with classes that consist of nothing more than shocking his students by telling them he's experienced the Unforgivables, putting them under the Imperius Curse and letting them duel. Nobody gives a damn about Dark Creatures. Quite often this is combined with traveling back to the 70's, where he manages to turn the Marauders' "traditional Opening Feast/New DADA teacher-prank" back on them, becoming either their new idol or a suspected Death Eather.

    Teacher Harry?

DLP thread in the Story Search Forum. I've only read Yellow Submarine (formerly Here Comes The Sun) and Like Some Song You Can't Unlearn. The former actually has the most realistic teacher!Harry yet, even though he starts a relationship with a student (Ginny). The latter mostly has a preacher!teacher!Harry, but is enjoyable nonetheless.

    The Art of Healing.

Unfinished (only 25k words) Harry/Gabrielle fic, where Harry teaches at Beauxbatons. Another student/teacher relationship. Harry's teaching abilities only play a small roll, but what we see of them is fairly decent.

There should be more fics where Harry is at least a decent teacher (I think I actually remember one, where he became the head of Slytherin after the war), but these are all I can find at the moment.

There's semprini's trilogy, though most of the conflict there is about morals and ethics rather than anything else.

I second the recc of Yellow Submarine. It's one of the few well-written H/G fics, though if you don't like emotional tension you probably won't like it much either.

Part 1 of 15 posted to YouTube- note that this is the Peter O'Toole version.

Also, Professor McGonagall became the Transfiguration teacher to replace Dumbledore when she was 31, so canon supports the plausibility of Harry as a Professor at least.

Snape became a teacher at 21 and Headmaster at 37. Umbridge became Headmistress in name with less than a year of 'teaching' experience. All under special circumstances, sure, but it at the very least shows it's possible for Harry to become Headmaster at 47 with minimal to no teaching experience. It'll all come down to whether or not the Hogwarts Board of Governors finds him capable. And being the Savior of the Wizarding World and youngest Auror (17) and Head Auror (27) ever should have given him some credit.

Hope by Jeaconais is features a decent teacher Harry, although it might not have the focus that you're looking for.

Overall, I don't think Harry's age is going to be the factor that determines whether your idea succeeds or not.

Teacher Harry later on in the story. Great read overall. Some cliches but I think they are done aren't done badly like many fics I've read so its worth it nevertheless. Her other story Bloody Skies is also recommended, but its an AU.
